I'm quite amused that your example "typical balanced lance" EXACTLY matches the "Owczarek Highland Hussars", a Polish-themed lance I'm painting up for tabletop play. Awesome, Thunderbolt, Wolverine, and Locust. The Hussars were the first lance I played when I got the BT:AGOAC box. (The rest of the mechs in the box got turned into "Kampfgruppe Schnitzel," a Lyran unit with the BattleMaster, Catapult, Shadow Hawk, and Commando.) Considering it was my first game, I made a lot of mistakes. I kept my Thunderbolt too close, and sent my Wolverine off too far. But the game ended in a few laughs when my friend took his BattleMaster into close combat with my Awesome... missed half of his shots, overheated, and exploded. We decided that was enough "learning" for the night, and decided to start again next time.

This looks like a good set of rule of thumb to keep in mind. There's a ton of other factors that go into a game a battletech, like terrain and objectives. I can't wait to see what's next.
