If you thought Malthus's depiction in the cartoon was bad, you should hear how the canon character reacted to the holovid series based on him. Basically challenged the makers to a Trial of Greivence, something FedCom did not acknowledge so attempted a libel suit. He tried issuing a batchal to the judge and did 6 months in a fedcom prison. His career took a major nosedive after that
Even better? He actually had a Jade Falcon lawyer with him who was fully prepared to make an actual legal case of it. The moment he leapt at the judge, he just started shaking his head and agreed the show truly did nail him.

Battletech is such a pulpy, campy, over the top rule of cool ridiculous setting that the term Mary Sue is almost meaningless. Everyone in the setting is either a hypercompetent badass or a mustache twirling megalomaniac. Clan Wolf has basic planning ahead skills among the walking temper tantrums that are the Crusader clans, of course they're going to come out ahead. If there is a Mary Sue in the setting, it's Kai Allard-Liao. He shares the Blood of Kerensky series with such characters as Phelan Kell, Ulric Kerensky, Jaime Wolf, Theodore Kurita, Hanse Davion, but no one gets to stop the story cold and receive tongue baths for ten minutes, not even mother loving Natasha Kerensky. Blood Legacy was just an excuse to get all the main characters and their kids together in one room on Outreach so they could lick Kai's boots.
I do love to hear an IS fan talk about the Clans. There was one advantage they didn't have though. Size. The inner sphere is really, really big and quantity has a quality all of its own. I love the idea of a Thor entering a city for an objective only to be mobbed by 11 Urbies with AC20's. TRASHCANS UNITE!!!!.
It doesn’t hurt that many IS mechs are just… Reliable. Sure you can have something as scary as an Atlas (which is still reliable to be fair) But you got stuff like the Catapult and the Marauder that were easy to maintain and easy to modify to your needs, as well as had weapons that were effective no matter the situation, and the sheer number of inner sphere personnel that could pilot them at any given moment, meant that tech superiority would only hold out for so long. Sure the Mad Cat and it’s relatives are quite frankly very effective at what they do. But one cat can be taken down by a few Catapults or Marauders. The Timberwolf is the Protagonist mech for everyone but Jade Falcon, hence why Aidan got killed when he piloted one, he became a Red Shirt the second he wasn't in his SUMMONER.
And he ignores that even then, he still killed 100 freebirth mech jocks (1/19 of the enemy force!) first and only sacrificed himself to save his stravag daughter-mere minutes after finding out from his former fuckbuddy/friend with benefits that they conceived her from one night of passion. But, that is why Adian Pryde is a LEGEND! Quiaff?
Redshirt, my ass. How many mechs did he lay low even as his mech was essentially shutting down around him, with an invalid star colonel talking him on to targets from above?
Yes Aidan Pryde died fighting Comstar. But to his credit, he pulled so much batshit crazy stunts during the battle of Tukayyid and killed so many soldiers of the comguard that at the end of fight, despite the fact that Jade Falcon hadn't taken any of their objectives, even Fotch himself had to admit that Comstar hadn't beaten Jade Flacon, just survived them. The man was so badass that he turned an outright defeat into a draw.
Not to mention he went from pariah to paragon solely for the sheer amount of space AT&T ‘mechs he killed while essentially standing still in a messed up ‘mech
@@williambryant6175 it was only a draw because Comstar realized if they wanted to truly Crush Jade Falcon they would have to dedicate other forces which were more better purposed in their current battlefields. True, but they also couldn't exactly afford much reinforcements in that way; they were socking it Cats and Jaguars at the same time (roughly) and likewise barely ended up *surviving* the fight with Cats, and nearly lost both objectives there. Jaguars they had a solid plan on and that worked well; I think the only places they could really pull reinforcements from would be Bears and Sharks once that wrapped up. And both of those clans largely noped out/weren't exactly playing to win 100% like the Falcons, Wolves, Jaguars, and Cats were. And correspondingly, the Jaguars and Cats basically broke themselves into pieces because they failed really hard at the objectives.
Malthus is actually real. He got captured in the war, and apparently got upset with his portrayal in the show, and challenged (I forgot who) to a duel over it. He was laughed at, told to get a lawyer like anyone else in the Inner Sphere, and then apparently tried to challenge the Judge. He later died after becoming a bit nicer and laying down his life fighting against The Society during the Wars of Reaving.

From page 86 of the newly-released BattleTech Legends, the entry on Nicolai Malthus: "Adam Steiner went on to become Archon of the Lyran Commonwealth, and was lionized in a holodrama that depicted Malthus as a screaming, bumbling idiot. In 3063, Malthus demanded a Trial of Grievance against Steiner and the production company, claiming that their inaccurate portrayal of him cost his status as a Jade Falcon. Informed that he would have to file the proper paperwork in Lyran courts to obtain a trial, Malthus inadvertently found himself in the middle not of a Circle of Equals, but a most unusual lawsuit. The case was eventually thrown out of court, and Malthus was detained for threatening the judge after the jurist refused his batchall." Amazing.
That's great, if that's how it canonically went down that would be like a bronze age warrior being thrown out of a modern court for getting mad at the judge and threatening to stab him

The Inner Sphere code name "Thor" comes from the weapons configuration: Lb-10x Left Arm = Thunder ER PPC Right Arm = Lightning Thus, thunder + lightning = Thor, Norse god of thunder, lightning and storms. This was explained in the Michael Stackpole novel trilogy "lethal heritage"...

Amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics. The war between Clan and Inner Sphere surely must be the greatest example of this ancient proverb, because it describes perfectly why, despite overwhelming tech advantage, despite far superior training, the Clan still got their asses handed to them. Because while one Thor is indeed a 'do anything I want and get away with it' mech, it is, at the end of the day, only a single mech. Eh, actually most clanners drive one of the base Configs. And are assigned by their commanders. You have to be Bloodnamed or a Ristar to usually be allowed to custom your config.
No, the commander just restricts the tonnage, configuration is only set for Trials Of Position. Warriors all ranks can customise their configurations (supply might be limited).
Circumstantial. There have been times where Clan commanders pull their heads out of their asses long enough to consider specific circumstances in their loadouts. Clan Wolf at Tukayyid, specifically. Also, there are cases where Mechwarriors were allowed to pick and choose their configurations when facing off in Trials of Position and Trials of Possession.

"ComStar tends not to fuck around." Anyone else remember that time they dressed up as Death Commandos? To raid the NAIS? On New fucking Avalon? While Daddy Davion was home? To destroy a *copy* of the Helm memory core? And failed miserably?
One thing ive noticed about clanner tech is that there really isn't a lot of uniqueness and variety in the _chassis_ but lots of variations of the components. Every clan uses Arctic Cheetah, Summomer, MadCat, TimberWolf, MadDog, etc but each clan builds it just slightly different than their peers. It really is showing that olden days clanners were so forcefully homogenized in the past that the only thing they had freedom to change was the weapon and engine types. Then you see inner sphere and their dozens upon dozens of mech designs and layouts.
First, Duncan Fisher is fucking awesome, I loved the Solaris fights in MW4:M just cause he made for one hell of an announcer! Secondly, as a Clan Wolf-Canopian, I'd like to apologize for the blind stupidity of the Crusader clans, we wardens try to keep them on a leash but they just wont listen to reason... Also to Tex and other IS citizens, it wasn't really the IS that won, it was Comstar that won with aid from the IS houses and thats only after our leader tipped off Comstar to the Clans ultimate goal of taking Earth, hence the big showdown on Tukayyid and Comstar blacking out all the HPGs that the clans had access to... Also, even as a clanner, theres no love lost when Smoke Jaguar was annihilated, and the rest of us got decimated. Smoke Jaguar were probably the stupidest of the clans with little to show for it except their prowess in battle, and in pushing for this invasion along with Jade Falcon, they bit off more than they could chew and deserved to die! As for the Thor/Summoner, its a take it or leave it thing, as Tex pointed out for 1 Thor you can get ALOT of other things and perhaps those things will work out better for you? But if you're Clanner or Steiner-(Post Invasion) then this is perhaps one of the better omni platforms, as long as you dont mind everyone knowing where your cockpit is and aiming at it...

I have watch all of the battletech episodes multiple times. Great job Tex and company.
The Summoner is the most flexible 'Mech in the Clan heavy bracket. It is no Mad Cat, and that only makes me love it more. Jump Jets and speed for mobility, suitable armor, an offcenter or torso mounted cokpit perfect for scouting in mountain areas. That all is backed up by an arsenal of weapons that work together on multiple ranges and adapting it to other situations just require one weapon replacement: the missile pod. ATMs or SSRMs give this thing serious threat potential. I never understood however, why the Clans didn't make the Summoner II a 75 ton 'Mech, instead of crippling the base model by ripping out the JJs.
Honestly I never understood why Aidan Pryde should be considered a legend in Jade Falcon. Warrior washout who got a second chance at testing. Said to be reading a lot, yet didnt understand simple things like a family feelings in the Inner Sphere (just look at your freebirth clansmen). And finally died at Tukayyid while his clan barely managed to pull a draw (but losing the battle as a whole). As a matter of fact fighting on Tukayyid was considered a dishonor for those clanners who survived (because it marked them as those who lost against Inner Sphere barbarians), including those who actually won (like Wolves), no matter how good they might have fought. Frankly it would be more fitting for those Way-of-the-Clans-obsessed-Falcons to use him as an example of "you do not want to be like that guy".
I guess what makes him legendary material is a combination of several factors: His "unusual" career, his leadership of the Falcon Guard that regained it's honor after being disgraced under Alder Maltus on Twycross, him gaining a Bloodname, and his skill as a Mechwarrior, combined with a death fit for a clan warrior: Saving the rest of his unit alone against overwhelming odds.
@@HerrCherno If it happened in Wolves or Bears or even Diamond Sharks I would have agreed with you. My problem is not really with players thinking of him as legendary pilot (though it is clear I do dislike him). Problem is Falcons putting him on the pedestal as a hero, which doesnt make sense for that rigid, fundamentalist clan. He certainly fought skilfully at Tukayyid, however he lost to Com Guard "barbarians" nevertheless. Just simply being in that battle was considered great dishonor even in far more forgiving clans, not to mention losing, which would rob him of the honor he would have gained if he died in the same manner fighting another clan. Core of the problem (in my opinion) is Thurston choosing Jade Falcon clan to write about, but not wanting to abide by that clans lore, thus writing himself into a corner (trying to make his characters respected in a clan that would give them no respect no matter how hard they tried - not just Aidan, Kael Pershaw would have been discarded to solahma unit seconds after sustaining his injuries, freeborn warriors being at least slightly accepted only after war with Wolf clan to fill seriously depleted ranks, etc.). That all said, while our opinions might differ on the subject, thank you for your comment. It is always nice to discuss Battletech lore with someone who is passionate about it.

Canon loadouts seem kind of hilariously under powered after you've been laser boating in MWO for a while and all you hear most of the time is the overheat warning.
The D is pretty good though, you can fire the large lasers all day at long range, and clan ER lasers already reach out further and hit harder. Upgrade the mediums to heavy lasers, and you have a nasty alpha at close range.
To the best of my knowledge, Aidan Pryde(Jorge) mostly used the Summoner prime configuration, minus his second, freeborn trial of position where he had the SRM-equipped variant that was similar to the prime variant.... was there some other text that discussed his load out choices?
I'm a bit weird about mech names. While I identify as IS, I feel that as the clans design and build their mechs, we should use their names for them. That said, it's not too hard to keep both names in your head to pull out as required.
