Hey, Y'all! We are Justin and Lil, plus four kids and one on the way. Just over a year ago, we moved our RV to 18 acres of raw land, built a solar power system, and now we are DIY building our Off-Grid house by hand. If you're new, check out our Playlist to catch up on our journey. Thanks for joining us!
In this video, we are zipping right along with the Zip Sheathing installation. We finish nailing the Zip System wall sheathing while while struggling to survive the wicked southern summer humidity and heat wave. Justin spends a lot of time at the top of the ladder, since our house is a pier and beam foundation and is high off the ground, and needs routing water breaks to replenish the amount of sweat dripping off of his face.
Despite the torturous high temps, Justin expertly lifts and nails the Zip System sheathing into place using his Dewalt 20V max nail gun. Then, we trimmed out the front door using the reciprocating saw. It wasn't the right tool for the job, so Justin only finished half of the opening, and he is ordering some better tools to cut out the rest of the windows and doors.
The kids don't care about the small opening, though. They are happy with the skinny front door. Without front door access, the kids would have nowhere to ripstick, climb like monkeys, and make herb shops.
The nail gun is behaving, the sun is out, and it's family time on the off grid homestead.
Not in the video is Justin vaulting over the side of the pool and creating a tidal wave at the end of the day.

Leaned a trick on the golf course while playing in 90 degree plus weather. Take small hand towels, put them in a cooler of ice with a little water, and you’ll be kept very cool all the time you are working. Never fails! God Bless you and your family.

Boy am I behind! Been a busy couple weeks. Great job on the sheathing project! I know what its like to have to work out in the heat when you really would rather not. We started our coop rebuild project last week and it was upper 80s all week. Unfortunately I don't have the ability to take my hat off when I'm working outside. My top would burn REALLY fast. Keep up the great work! It'll all be worth it in the end!

Hey Adam, glad to hear from you! Hope everything is going well with your Solar setup. Are you completely off grid yet? Yes, better to keep the hat on 😄
@AdamDeLay07
@AdamDeLay07 Месяц назад
@@DIY_or_DIE not yet. I’m getting closer. I plan on putting more solar on the chicken coop “run in” portion, but I’ll need more battery capacity. Electric stove/oven, A/C and dryers all take tons of power.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE Месяц назад
Good for you man, one step at a time! Since we are going to be moving out of the RV soon, I'm planning on ordering a second EG4 battery bank. In the summer we have to run that AC 24-7 down here to keep the RV below 80 😅 one RV AC for ~14 hours burns through about 75% or our bank.
@AdamDeLay07
@AdamDeLay07 Месяц назад
@@DIY_or_DIE that’s great news on both fronts! I take it things are moving forward with the mobile home? Hopefully you guys can get into that before the new little one arrives! Yeah A/C is essential down there. No way you can live inside that oven without one! Wait till you see one of those “free shipping” deals and then pick it up. Shipping is crazy on those batteries.

I’ve always measured and cut panels to fit the opening. Or snapped a chalk line and used a skill-saw to cut it out after. I’ve never used a router when building houses. But this was before routers most likely. 😊

Great job in today’s journey. I’ve been watching maybe 6 weeks and had a couple questions I’m sure you e answered but I don’t know the answers too. Where are ya’ll located? That will answer what your seasons will look like. Are you off grid with solely solar use? You mentioned loving your circular saw and I see most of your stuff is dewalt. Are u getting good battery life? Does your wife home school your children if you are remote? What are your plans for the land after the home. Really enjoy your content. Your friend from Virginia.

Hey there, thanks for joining us again for this week's update! We are in southeast Geargia, hence the humidity and the heat 🥵 we get all our power from our DIY EG4 solar power system. You can check out some of our earlier videos to see what equipment we are using and how we built the system. We are blessed to be able to homeschool our kids. We have plenty left on the house, but once that is done we have lots of plans for the homestead! We also need a garage, a barn, a shop, and we may decide to add onto the house in the future if we are blessed with more children 😀 there won't be any shortage of DIY projects for sure 😉 I've been using dewalt 20V max for over 10 years and I have my original batteries from my first set of drills. Granted, I've only been using them heavy duty for the last year as we've been builing.building. Our goal for the land is to develop a fully functioning self sufficient mini farm.

Looking great. Just curious, was horizontal 2x4 blocking at the top of the first sheet not needed for you? Still rigid between first set and top set of panels? FYI, I have a newish 18V Milwaukee framing nailer and it sometimes jams or under nails also so I know your pain. Good tip on using a different brand nail to solve the problem. Great videos also.
