The Hammersmith incident referred to was the shooting of Diarmuid O Neil who was shot dead by the Mets SO19 in a hotel room. It was alleged by the Met that O Neil and his ASU had been preparing 10 tonnes of ordnance, larger then anything previously seen and on par with the MOAB ordnance in the arsenal of the likes of the US and Russian military. A recording of O Neil has him talking about a seven ton device. There is an audio recording of the Mets SO19 forcing entry into the hotel room with manual force rather then using breaching rounds. O Neil subsequently shouts he is unarmed and he surrenders, he is then shot dead. Was there malice involved ? I don't think so, SO19 are in my opinion not a division 1 elite unit in terms of what they do, as the entry showed, I suspect red mist then descended on the officer who shot O Neil. After this incident an SAS trainer stated that SO19 candidates should undergo psychometric testing. It was a very similar incident to the shooting of John Charles De Menezes at Stockwell. It was alleged 14 INT/COY/SRR were involved in the surveillance, once again the poor outcome was most likely down to poor training and poor communication and tradecraft between different agencies. The above speaker talks of his short attention span, so how did he end up doing surveillance? I suspect many in the army simply put themselves down for courses to break up the monotony and get through.

ASK him how long dose he think he'd last on the Blanket.... Then he said he'd have definitely joined the SS... The guy also thinks its a holy war..... But they couldn't use the road's., so who held the high ground for want of a better phrase. He's all over the shop... DO YOU VET THEASE Vets... He respected the Argentine press ganged kids. Counter surveillance appears to have been the IRAs weakest skillset. The more I hear about outfits like 14 Int Coy, the more cowboy they appear. Why would you risk knocking on a door with a clip board, when you could see simply send a cab around to knock on the door and observe from a distance. Soldier's due to their Pavlov type obedience training lack the lateral thinking skills for such a role. These guys on the ground with foreign accents and British army mindset would have stood out like a sore thumb. Cops are far better in such a role then soldier's .The simplist counter surveillance skill is simply putting a matchstick in a door or window frame it doesn't have to be hi tech.

I recall being in the RAF Police when 14 int were desperately putting out a recruitment call for members. The RAFP had (and still has I suppose) a choice of career path into counter intelligence specialisation and a future career with the intelligence services. 14 int put out a plea, cleverly worded, for recruits into the undercover world. All applications had to come via our office and I recall the rag tag bunch of dreamers and fantasists from cooks to technicians that were putting in applications. I'm guessing the same happened in the Navy. This was the early nineties. We already had a successful programme of infiltrating the IRA and similar groups and wondered what on earth these people were expected to be doing? We were well aware of the sometimes dubious shenanigans they got up to (they had 'secure' comms but we had nimrods) and we were responsible for protection of Aldergrove and Bishops Court. They were kept at arms length and I know they weren't aware we were doing it.

Wrong pal. They were setting up for a snipping run. But during the cease fire, the sas and 14 intelligence got to open up lines of enquiry to south armagh. In fact, the horse box witch held the .50 calibre rifle used ( one of a minium of no.3 .50 calibre guns). They managed to track down one of the teams and loosen the bolts on the horse box wheels with hidden compartment. So please, if we are to document warts and all. It must have been the late 70's a guy I knew would travel over regularly for greyhounds. He crashed into a police vehicle drunk but there was another vehicle watching and the police vehicle took off. The other vehicle approached him and he ended up in the car with them. They started asking what his beliefs were and he stupidly told them he supported the Republican cause etc. They must have checked him out with a famous guy for breeding really good greyhounds at the time but they blindfolded him and took him a run somewhere and when they took the blindfold off he was in a room with Irish flags and some weapons and I am sure they took a photo of him there and gave it to him as a keepsake. I thought it was a bit of a lax thing to do on both sides. He bought a lot of very high-end greyhounds regularly, going over there for years even before the troubles and I take it the breeder had links or was well respected within the IRA as he was on the border and had a lot of land and would let all the greyhounds out to run across the fields. The guy I knew also had a James Connolly look about him and was from Edinburgh. I just realized now that he had the same surname as one of, probably the most prominent leaders behind the Easter Rising who was executed but I don't know if he was related down the line somewhere? I don't know if maybe that came into play for that to happen and this was a successful businessman, who I knew enough to know he would not make that story up.
