In 2022, Marcegaglia, one of the World’s largest steel
companies, acquired the iconic Tinsley long products plant in Sheffield.
Sheffield's legacy as a centre of steel production
has shaped its identity and culture, with the city well-known for producing high-quality steel. The Tinsley site melts over 250,000 tonnes of scrap
a year, producing wire-rods, wire and bar. Although the Sheffield mills are currently only used to produce long stainless steel, Marcegaglia intends to produce both flat and long products at the facility.
Four new GS Series Baumann sideloaders were
acquired for the handling of finished products. Working around the clock, the trucks
are integral to the operation carrying hot metal to the cooling grounds,
as well as into the storage and dispatch areas.
The 18 tonnes capacity GS180s are designed
to withstand the tough operating environment. Decks are reinforced with steel plate,
whilst posts help to align and retain loads.
The excellent visibility is enhanced
by high-definition cameras and deck-side wheels are protected
from excess heat & damage.
The chassis, axles & mast are all tested
well beyond the truck’s capacity. The on-board electronics have also been
kept to a minimum to enhance reliability. The cabin also floats on oil filled bushes to provide added comfort on uneven ground.
