A huge volcanic eruption near the South Pacific island of Tonga sent a series of tsunami waves across the ocean and onto West Coast beaches Saturday. (1-15-22)
Tsunamis can surprise you with their waves! It's wise to stay away from the sea when these things happen! Back in the 60's I was in the parking lot at Huntington Beach when a monster swell came in and swept some cars out of the lot. I was an experienced sea rat, and I was running like crazy!
I think when I was young and stupid I would hang around. I live in Kauai, HI currently (we got the tsunami warning today--buzzers go off all over the island. HI water will give you respect for the ocean. Wicked rip tides here and an undertow, and that's normal. They clear the beaches when a large wave is coming--even if it's a rogue wave. There's a place where honeymooners and others go to take pictures. It's a flat rock ledge that meets the ocean, called Queens Bath. Several people have been swept away when a large wave surprised them. You stand 0 chance of survival once you get caught up in a large wave.
Back in the '80s I lived in Santa Cruz and one day there was a tsunami warning from an offshore earthquake. So what did people do? They stood on the beach and went out on the piers and jetty waiting for a huge wave to wash them out to sea. Stupid is as stupid does.
And what happened? Nothing much. I remember that, too. I was up in San Francisco. We had a similar warning in the early 70's. Same deal now. Not a lot to see. (sea? Get it)

Because its nothing? Ive seen higher waves durning a winter storm. You want to see something. I grew up 50 miles from mt st. Helens when it blew up in 1980. The sky was dark for a day or two amd we had 5 inches of ash in our back yard. Half the mountain was gone. People her hanging out on the beach.
Californians! Make sure your phones are fully charged at all times, you never know when there can be a tsunami. You want to be ready to get to the beach to make your tiktok videos! If the sea starts to withdraw, that means a big tsunami, so go closer. Get the best shots.
I'm conflicted by your comment. Outside interference may negate the validity of their Darwin awards, however it may also increase overall participation. I would also include Washington and Oregon to your original comment in fairness to all eligible applicants.
That lady couldn't have said it any better. We are NEVER IN CONTROL...!!! Mamma nature is and ALWAYS will be. This could have been catastrophic which is why you couldn't pay me enough to live out in California. With all the mudslides, earthquakes, wildfires, etc...they get.

People really think the tsunami is over the first waves aren’t the biggest. The only reason it’s taking awhile for the big wave to hit is because it’s carrying all that extra water
NZ got warnings of a possible tsunami, so what did I do go to the beach 😂 but definitely a cyclone coming so the waves here are huge atm anyway, got some awesome photos, Oh and we had an earthquake Friday *Happy new year*
This guy is funny. He's like, "the wave hit at exactly high tide. Which is why this was so noticeable and we're still talking about this." As if it was an insignificant event or something that just doesn't happen to the USA haha The islands and the people got hit pretty bad, the sheer height of the eruption, the type of Tsunami from a central point that spread 360degrees across the pacific, that's why we're still talking about this. Pretty amazing. Something we haven't seen yet. Let's keep talking about it! I want more !

I think you mean water faster than air but, yes, this meteorologist is very confused. Atmospheric compression waves are very different from sound waves.
@@wildcatherder Sound *is* compression waves. And yes, the speed of sound in water is between the speeds in air and rock. And if this person is an actual meteorologist, then that's a sorry profession.

Exactly, theres probably more Volcanoes underneath than humankind knows. This is how the great flood happened, at least one could imagine this more clearly now.
We had a beach day planned. I don't have tv. Etc. I'll check the weather but not compulsively. So I can see how some people can get to the beach and not know there was a tsunami warning until they got there and were told. I checked the beach again and seen the tsunami warning and obviously didn't go. I'm not going to then call people idiots for going to the beach. You have people out there during kingtides. Kids , adults and ocean savvy people have all perished on these shores. I don't think it's ever ok to ever think someone should be swept out to sea. Yeah they shouldn't be there but people don't have to be negative about it.
We live in new Zealand few kms to Tonga, we heard the bang but in terms of waves wasnt that bad Crazy how the waves reached america from the pacific That shows us we are all connected by the water
I read on the weathernews here in the Netherlands that they measured a sudden change in the airpressure here as well and we are on the other side of the world! Woooow Mother Natuure! 😮
Have you ever noticed how when events like this happen, the news stations are more interested in charts, graphs and studio animation than showing the real footage of the events? Even when they do, it's always the announcer standing in the way of the image(s). All about them, not the event. Gets tiring watching the same thing over and over on all the channels for all the events. That's why we created videos people. Show them. Nobody cares about the talking head.
This a warning to the entire west coast. The volcano explosion could have just as easily been far worse and sent a wave far larger out that would have laid waste to the west coast. The U.S. needs to look at this as a warning and a lucky break. One day a real wave will come and it will be a terrible disaster.
@Living The Dream I am no expert so I will say as far as they can. Since it is shallow water that makes the big waves, they should go out past the continental shelf.

Seriously confusing last few statements about next high tide from the meteorologist near the beginning. Clearly the peaks would be less than the higher tide in the morning, so not really a matter of concern. His charts showing wave height at Point Reyes are to a different scale and really do not show much higher waves. Makes me wonder about this meteorologist.
You know these weather people are bored really bored with basically the same forecast day after day after day.. And please if they are going to go breaking news and all excited,1 know what the hell you are talking about so please educate your selves and 2,least actually show where there is actual flooding if something not just water in the ocean..seriuosly..
What alarms me is this, the people of Indonesia also got a Tsunami warning and they all fled to higher ground. America's West coast got the same warning and some went out for a front row seat on the beach, incredulous!!! I just don't get it...smh. Then of course others have to risk their lives to rescues them, because of this kind of stupidity.
I've lived in Stockton, California all my life.....just about 8 years ago....I had three dreams of California being engulf by huge tidal waves that covers the mountain hills of California Central Valley and I was in the middle of it all. I can see the waves from my living room window. When the waves hit the house with me in it, felt so real! couldn't believe it was happening, slams the front door I can see it clearly! and my moment of death....that is when I wake up from the dream.
So weriddddd!!!!! Lastnight I swear by it ! I had a dream that a huge wave basically hit us in california an it was like the end of the world ! Fire / volcano it was nuts an the whole sky was dark an black . All of my family was praying an saying our good byes then I wake up to this on the news 😢😐😳😳😳 pretty crazy so I guess our dreams are saying something ey 😢
I had similar dreams too before, and all the houses closest to the Sunset beach and Great highway in San Francisco were pretty much flooded by huge tidal waves.

a tsunami could close to ocean floor til it get close to land and it starts rising with force and thats a lot water that is pushing cross 5000 miles cal think of power that volacano and you can hear as it gos off and think fish and sharks that are running from it and they be hurry moving so fast to get away from the valcano better stay out of water and all the gas.s that could come from the volcano that travels in the water.. could have a lot of die fish life come on shore.
