Bay of pigs was a disaster but the way he dealt with the cuban missile crisis was incredible

I don't think so, there were barely 1500 rebels who would have fought a quarter million strong battle hardened force, plus castro was largely popular at the time

RFK ran the BOP Operation (a CIA Plan) and sold his brother and the cabinet on the efficacy of the operation, WITHOUT getting the US Military involved in the upfront planning, logistics and execution. It was Bobby's operation. The generals were brought in AFTER the President made the decision to go ahead with BOP. "The President needs your support with this operation" (paraphrasing somewhat), RFK said to the Joint Chiefs prior to meeting JFK. BOP went ahead as a joint CIA-Military operation. I'm no military expert, but a landing brigade of 1,500 cannot - at least I don't think - overthrow a country the size of Cuba, regardless of how much air support you have, and the number of US warships in the Caribbean. One of the generals made this point to the president and his cabinet, citing an island - a small fraction the size of Cuba - in the Pacific during WW2, that took approx. 8,000 American marines to capture from the Japanese. THAT captured island had US air support. The general's point was obvious So what happened? JFK pulled back half way through the invasion, American warships sat quiet in the Caribbean, and Khrushchev deemed Kennedy 'weak', all 'talk and no action.' The operation was a disaster. Khrushchev saw this as an opportunity to place missiles in Cuba to (1) provide a deterrent to Cuba against further attacks; and (2) to balance somewhat the placement of nuclear missiles around the world. The US had missiles in Turkey aimed at Russia. If not for a Russian sub commander in Oct-1962, the world could very well have been destroyed. It was THAT CLOSE. Actions have consequences.
