I bought a 1994 Bayliner Capri 1950 with a 3.0 Merc for $1500 with the trailer in 2014. I still have the same boat to this day. It looks like a 2010 and runs like a champ.
I have a 1989 capri 2150. 5.7 liter. I've had it for 6 years now. Played on the water a lot and needs some updating for sure. I watched your videos and decided to follow some of your restorations techniques. All I need to do now is carpet the floor and replace the wood support walls for the dash and the little closet area. Thanks for sharing your videos. Helped me a lot. Itching to get on the water.
Wow, this brings back memories. I bought this exact boat in 1988 new. It gave us many years of enjoyment and adventures. I paid $14,500 Canadian. I just checked Bayliner 20.5 new bowrider, only with 6cyl. Comes in at $58,000. I cannot believe the boat prices today. It is well worth spending money on this, to have the same enjoyment and pleasure as buying a new one. Lot's left over for gas, steaks and beer. Cheers from Toronto
@@chefgeir I watched some of your food videos. Maybe you should have a cooking channel. Sind sie Deutsch? I love " Callekocht " short quick, entertaining. If he did them in English, would be big hit. Cheers
@@guenthermichaels5303 thanks for your comments! It appears that "algorithm god's" don't think so. My cooking videos may only have 100 views but my Bayliner restoration video has over 600,000! I'm Norwegian but I would NEVER considering speaking Norwegian in my videos.
Love seeing folks do work and get things done! you did a fantastic job with this little gem. I picked up a 1987 Chaparral 198C last week to do this exact same thing!
Chef I really enjoyed your rebuild. I can't find your other video on when you had to repair the transom. But omg you had some serious trust in that old tree branch. I was watching with one eye open. Loved it through. I really like to see when folks restore the classics. Great job. Thanks for sharing
Nice to see. I'm hopefully going to restore one also. I love working with my hands and doing things myself. Any rich guy can buy a nice boat but a man who has to fix his own and make it nice I respect more! Great job!
I love these Bayliner vids. I just ripped the interior of my ‘03 192 .. down to the ply. I’m going with faux teak flooring, and replacing the carpet along the sides. I gained some good ideas on the transom seats with speaker boxes. As well as a new dog house. I too, need to rebuild the lower half. The upper half is ok. Thanks for the inspiration 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Nice job, always loved these boats when i was a kid. Picked one up cheap as well and did a little facelift. Im also retired CG, saw just as many "hi end" boats break down more than these. Sometimes its nice to have a knock around boat to experiment with. But then again I have 4,lol
Don’t run it with lower unit so high, it puts lots of stress on expensive moving parts. Yea she’s worth what you paid for her. I restored a few in my days in same condition. It’s a shame people think cause it’s a boat, it can be left uncovered outside in all weather. Anything to me, if it’s worth owning, it’s worth taking care of. Good luck on it all
I'm just finishing up a 1989 1750 Capri Cobra. Luckily the floor was in good shape. Had to replace all upholstery from the windshield back. Previous owner kept the bow covered but did nothing else to maintain it for the 6 years he had it. Wood under the transom cushion was rotten to powder. Every cleat and piece of hardware was loose. He put a couple hundred dollars into a 200W stereo system but I am hard of hearing so never listen to stereo music. All the wiring was just twisted together and taped. Even the ignition key was bare wires wrapped around the terminals. Side window was broken and somebody replaced it with Plexiglass. It turned out nice. After 6 weeks, I put it in the water last week but, now, I'm thinking it's too small for me. I had a 1984 1950 Cuddy with a Volvo back when it was new and it was the right size for me. So may be moving up like you. Sorry I didn't record my restoration but I learned a few things and techniques from you.
Thank you for sharing your story! Love it! If you subscribe, you may know that I sold the Capri 1950 and bought a Four winns Sundowner 225 with a little cabin. Check it out on my channel! .......and subscribe!
Just picked up an 88' Capri with the 5.0 for cheap... We will see how it goes. It's too bad how some folks treat these old boats. Great job and determination!!!
I have that exact same boat except for mine is brand new still, my Grandpa bought it brand-new used it a couple times and left it in his garage with the cover on and when he passed away it was given to me along with and 85 Chevy Blazer that he had bought to pull the boat it was also brand new! I like the custom Bimini top nice job I can fully enclose mine it's pretty cool.
WOW... you sir are an ANIMAL!... that was almost a basketcase and you brought her back, GREAT JOB... that 2.3 will take a beating all day and there's tons of performance parts to boost it to 150 hp easily. This video made my day, Thanks, be safe! ;)
I had a 16 ft 1969 Bayliner that was restored with 160 horsepower 2-stroke Johnson on the back of it stroked out and it really made 200 horsepower and that thing was a beast on the river it was a shiny red and white boat beautiful carpet interior beautiful boat I miss that thing a lot I paid $900 bucks for the rebuilt motor so the guy just need to get rid of it out of the divorce and I had it for 3 years and I sold it and man that boat was awesome it handled so good around the river in the tight turns you just back on the throttles whip around in Florida and it could hold probably three people Max I mean I've had five people in it but it does better with three or less it was a nice little ski boat too not as big as a smaller but it was an old school 60 style ski boat and everybody loved it at the boat ramp
That's exactly right Sean Michael! Correct prediction! Nice. Nice upgrades too. Purchased a 93 cuddy.was kept inside so didnt need massive work like u did.but rust in risers exaust flappers broken.just the shampooing cleaning took me all summer off an on. U quadripled value on ur boat.nice work.
Thanks Mark! I am working on a new project now. It's a Four Winns Sundowner 225. Please hit the subscribe button to get notified when I launch a new video. It's free.
Really enjoyed watching this. So my granddad bought new an 86 Capri Cuddy. He passed in 04 and grandma sold it without asking if anyone in the fam wanted it. I have recently found where it ended up. I haven't talked to the owner but haven't seen it moved in the 2 years I've spotted it daily. Really tempting to inquire in buying it but scares me to think about what kinda shape it's in. But your video makes me reconsider... Especially if i can get it cheap.
Cool. Well, if it has been sitting uncovered and unprotected from the weather, you probably also have a rotten transom. If you scan through my videos on my channel, you will find one where I rebuild the transom. Mine was rotten! Don't forget to subscribe!
Nice job and video its inspiring to watch you. There are so many Bayliners around that need this work.Such nice boats good to see this one being saved.I have a 1985 16ft Bayliner Capri Cuddy.I did the floorboards 6 years ago. They rotted partially again cause I left it uncovered stupid, lazy me.I will fix it again and cover the boat properly this time.I am retiring soon and want to use the boat again it does 40 mph with a 1988 Yamaha 115 its fun...Glenn in N.Y.
@@jsolo7576 I got a little side tracked by Hurricane Sally last year. Got some roof damage. Decided to reroof the house myself. Metal roof this time. What was I thinking?? Anyway, getting back to boat, and boats, after roof done. But with what I've seen so far with boats on the water this year. It would be a great bus to get started.
I myself just picked up a 94 Capri 3.0 so what rotted wood can be fixed fairly easy the key to having these boats is the price that you can get them for and then you can spend as much money and time invested and make it your own comparisons to buying a ready to go for triple or more. Good job Happy Safe Boating
Thank you for comment Steve! As you see, there are a lot of "negative Nancy" out there. I can't afford buying a new boat, so if I want a boat, this is the way to do it! Happy boating to you too!
I just got a 88 capri last night. It's in better shape than yours was. I hope to get her on par with these new boats everyone is running nowadays. I'm gutting the bow seats and mounting rod holders up front for fishing and found new seats for the hull on the west marine website that I'm going to order as well as a wake boat tower I'm going to mount tower speakers on. I cant wait to be able to enjoy her. I'm a truck driver so it will be a slow process but I plan to have her done by summer 2023.
Seems like a great deal and you made it look easy. We find lots of those that I’d love to flip but the usually have cracked blocks from lack of winterization here in Colorado. Then it’s not worth it since I’m not a mechanic.
Funny I used to work at a Bayliner dealership wen that boat was new ..1750 or 1950 ..they were built as a working man's boat at nearly half the price of other boats we sold at the time , the hulls were very thin .. but yet seemed to hold up ? I remember some factory problems on the 89 , the factory corrected them with "trim tabs " later that year ..the came with three drive line options of course Mercury being the most expensive at the time , or more dependable .. I believe the omc sterndrive was the most common leaving the Volvo Penta in last place , my boss who worked on boats for 40 years at the time used to say a boat is a whole in the water that people threw money into ..but for a starting price of $600 bucks your way ahead of the game . A new boat is payments for years , wasted .. but every dime you put in this boat is all yours , REGARDLESS of book value ..in the end it's paid for . And you get to run with people who will pay for years . Good job ...
Thanks for watching guys! I hoped for 100 000 views within ONE YEAR. It is now one hour and forty minutes till midnight, and current view count this moment is 100 059!!!!!
You are a handy fellow to have around. I'm doing basically same thing on a 87 Bayliner cobra close bow. I'm told it's a rare boat. So we'll see if it will last for a few years to come.
These are great boats. Their only weakness is that OMC out drive! Baby it a lot! Other than that You’re doing a great job. Love the attention to detail
I don't have any videos of it on youtube. I just got a lucky find on Craigslist in Maine. I really liked your video though. I'm going to school for marine engineering so I enjoy tinkering with things as well
I've got a bayliner project with an outboard, but I cant find a replacement handle with pull out neutral throttle control. Do you know what could be interchangeable with that?
Nice work on this, Chef... enjoy the boat. Mine runs great, might need some floor work soon. Did you find any patterns for the fiberglass hull to so this, the flooring, or just dive in? I am going to be shy about tearing it up I'm worried about damaging existing hull, my soft spots aren't too bad yet, so planning ahead. Thanks again for the great overview.
Did I miss something, or did he glass in the motor cover? How would he get to the starter and the oil filter, cables, wiring, and the bilge? Nice job so far, but I may have looked for something a little bigger, with a V6 or a V8.
I have a similar bayliner but mine has the out board force motor...i have redun the entire interior and floor, got the motor running like a champ and rebuilt the trailer including painting it now im in the process of reinforcing the transome after finding a couple soft spots in it once that is done I will reinstall the swim step and fish finder and I'll be back on the water. The prior owner tried to cover up a few problems with shoddy fixes but they came to light very quickly the first season I had the boat...shame on him but im learning alot about fixing boats and i like doing it.
pressure treated. And it will last longer than the original, as most small boat builders back in the day only used cheap, untreated wood. But thank you for your concern.
Great job! I have a 83 Bayliner Capri with Volvo Penta 270......do you know best place to get the outdrive bellows? I wish I could fix some of my interior but don't know anything about fiberglass nor upholstery.
@@chefgeir I'm trying to restore a 1984 thundercraft 17 ft open bow. Just watching the hard work it takes to restore and finally taking it to the lake made me thrilled just as much as finally being done with childsupport.
I just saw this vid and thought you'd be removing the transom as well, and the rest front to back, I'm sure there's some intrusion into the transom as well.....however all's well that ends well...I passed up a bayliner that was exactly the same way instead of a mercruiser it had the omc and that was another deciding factor ( no omc parts available anymore) and being a mercruiser guy it soured me on the whole deal as well....at least it runs and good work on what you have done.....thumbs high
Hi V C! There is a lot of different videos about this boat. There are TWO on the transom rebuild alone. If you subscribe, you get notified every time I launch another video. PS: No problem getting OMC parts. At least not in the western world.
Good for you .. you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to have the same experience as other boaters .. I have a 1968 Starcraft close bow with a 83 merc 50 hp .. does the trick
I paid 600.00 for mine, all it needs is a doghouse and carpet and a carb rebuild. I have every thing I need except the doghouse, I can't find one anywhere.
This may be a long shot, but I have a similar model, a 1992 but the propeller is gone. Would by chance still own this boat and be able to tell me what numbers are on your prop?
I have since sold the Bayliner and purchased a Four Winns project so I don't have access to that model number anymore. However may I recommend you go to facebook.com/groups/BaylinerOwnersClub or other "clubs" and post the question. Most likely you will be able to get your question answered there.

What type of grinder wheel did you use on the angle grinder to cut through the wood? I can’t seem to find one that’ll cut well enough through the thin fiberglass layer on my flooring.
Instead of using a grinder wheel, use a cut-off wheel. They are thin and much more brittle, so be careful! www.harborfreight.com/search?q=cutting%20wheel
Sjes beautiful i just bought a 1986 capri it has the 5.0 v8 in 2 day my son and i already removed all the interior cut out the old flooring removed all the carpet its a whole lot of work but absolutely worth it at the end its out first boat
@@chefgeir i did thank you in 2 days my son and i removed all the carpet flooring seats panels and installed new supports and now we will be fiberglassing it and on top of the fiberglass ill be spaying flexseal took rear outdrive apart new seals amd gasket so much work more then i thought haha
it,s remembering me that I rebulit a similar boat, I.ve took 6 years to do the job because I've redone all the powertrain ,all the structure, the seating plus the repaint of the hull and the deck. to finish, I've built a swim platform from scratch.
@@chefgeir I've done that 15 years ago so video uploading was not popular consequently, I have no video to share about this work but i have many pictures.
Wow, just came across this video as I have also looked into these models as people seem to be giving them away for next to nothing. Is this a 17ft? If so, what kind of speed can you expect on this with factory motor?
Hi "Butler"! Mine is 19" and speed is about 25 knots, but it can easily increased with another prop with higher pitch, as my engine was in red zone at full speed. My motor is a 2.3 liter Ford, four cylinder. The same boat may also come with bigger engines.
Hi Chef,I just bought a Bayliner cortesa and live-in Oakland, Ca.I don't know where are you located. If you are close to me,is there any chance to fix motor of my boat ?
I live in Savannah GA. Unfortunately, I have to pay someone to fix MY motor currently. I do no longer own the Bayliner. I bought a little jet boat now. Was planning to have some fun in the shallow marsh rivers here in the low country and engine is not running well.
Dear owner! How much was the restoration? Had to rebuild inside deck or any parts? Generally used to be soft and damaged the inside wood deck. I see new carpets...Thx for the informations! I hope to good wind!
Probably around $1000. Lost track. I ended up replacing the transom. You can see that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mYozqpccbQg.html
Oh. There is so much more! You should subscribe and see some of the other videos. Start with "virgin trip around Tybee" (launched a year ago) (especially the last 30 seconds). Then transom rebuild and a bunch of other stuff. Next task is replacing head gasket(?)
The OMC Cobra stern drives are pretty strong... But you should never run the engine with the drive trimmed out like that..the drive shaft has u joints just like the drive shaft on a car or truck..u will destroy the u joints quick. That knocking noise you heard was that u joint.. always run with water like you did . And Always trim it down . As far as Bayliner goes . They were pretty cheap and the quality wasn't the best.. but if you treated it right . Keep it in the dry youd be good..
Marc Harris Hey Marc, I just bought a 1997 Bayliner Capri 1954 and it’s in relatively good condition. I’ve had it out twice now and it stalls shifting into reverse. Mind if I pick your brain for this problem?
