I saw him in about 77 at UCLA Royce Hall and the best parts were the stories that led into and wove into the songs... At one point he broke a string and changed it out while telling a great story, then came back in with flaming licks, all in a flow, didn't miss a beat...
Unfortunately the last time I saw him was pretty much as you described and even then, at one point he pulled out a lick that whipped my head around with WTF. Fortunately I am old enough to have seen him in the 60s and 70s when there was no one better as a player, singer, or performer. But just go back to the early records and give respect where it is due
I saw him in 90’s Yes just rambling into the mic with a rhythm section & the occasional lick Not worth the price of the ticket actually. Boring. But he was superb when he was younger. You have to go back to the 60’s to see him when he could actually play well.
From having seen all 3 live. B.B King is obviously a living legend. He's carried the blues acrossed so many generations, his guitar playing & his persona are that of a storyteller. He's the father figure of the blues, no one commands respect like B.B King. He's the King. Derek Trucks is a god given player. No one plays like that, every note from a completely different place within. All heart & soul. You find a player like that once in a lifetime. No one comes close to being a THAT good. John Mayer is incredibly talented. To be a platinum selling songwriter, smoking guitarist & a world reknowned entertainer selling out stadiums & arenas around the world requires one to be talented. He can write, he can play, and he can entertain. Triple threat, just a monster musician. No need to compare anyone to anything. Just let the beauty of these amazing musicians in their elements come together....enjoy !
skeetv123 You nailed it. All three are (were) superb. JM doesn't get the respect he deserves. He's a fine guitarist, and an innovator. With his song catalog, and ability to bring authentic blues to the youngsters, he's going to be around a while. Don't believe it? Check out the John Mayer Trio.... Dude some of john Mayer's early stuff is out of this world. You should watch his live performance in LA "where the light is" there is stuff with his jazz trio that will blow you away, and hes so damned good on electric and acoustic guitar. I know he gets a bad rap or whatever but the dude is legitimately one of the best musicians alive. Although I haven't enjoyed his past few albums as much as his trio, and early releases like room for squares and continuum.

He's a super fine player... I'm not a fan but have liked anything I've ever heard from him. Maybe I should be a fan! Find RU-vid videos on a show he did on Country Music TV with Keith Urban.. I think it's called CM crossover. They do 5-6 songs, and both just burn it down vocally and on guitar on some really great songs. Fantastic stuff!
Anyone talking about Mayer’s solo being “awkward” has no ability to play guitar at a higher level than average. He’s an incredible musician. He held it back all night and let loose one good solo, and he was done. He was in the middle of recovery from throat surgery, entirely exhausted, and enjoying the hell out of playing with and listening to 2 legends. Pull your head out your ass and listen to the music.
imho, i think John Mayer is a fine guitar player. But as a seasoned professional guitarist/ musician, who gets paid to play, has music on the radio, I too think John Mayer's guitar solo was awkward. But I think there's a good reason for that. The band was playing at such a uninspiring low-volume when John started playing his solo. But when the drummer started accenting the snare and the band picked up in volume John's lead started to kick in.
@@Carla-tz7qwthey do have a bass player. He is to the right of the drummer. He's playing a red 5 string, I do believe. There is also a horn section we don't hear from much, to the left od John.
ive been playing for years and john mayer always continues to blow me away with hs phrasing and his passion. He will be a LEGEND no doubt in this life tiime.
Susan Tedeschi has the sweetest expression when she looks at BB, very endearing. Everytime I hear her speak of him it is genuine. The only hope for keeping the blues alive is on that stage and there are 2 people missing, Keb Mo and Doyle Bramhall 2.
It’s sad some people don’t get the truth about Mayer. He made his money shitting out a couple BS pop radio hits. But he plays a serious role in keeping blues alive with his live shows..
Yeah, I don’t get it. The thing is to be what people call a successful musician (to make money) you have to play what’s popular, for John it was pop. And I guess it clouds people’s judgment of him, and hopping on the hate train. But he is an amazing player

Derek ... takes an incredible technicality, adds his heart and soul with an intrinsic ear and ... well when Mayer says "I don't wanna follow THAT" ...it was the wisest thing he may ever have done... that solo is one of the finest EVER

Well I'm not sure about that because B.B king is the KING of blues guitar and Derek Trucks is a revolutionary slide player and well John mayer is just a good guitarist. Even though John is talented, he'll never be at the status that the other legends up their are at

the reason B.B is better is because he practically invented what we now know as the modern blues solo. He inspired players from Hendrix and Clapton to EVH and Joe Satriani. but Mayer has not had that type of influence thus meaning he is and may never be as good as B.B. King. But yes I do agree that mayer is a very talented play but he hasn't made the type of influential playing that the others has done, I'm not insulting his skills as a player aaron paille Ragz25T

+True A Pretty sure that's a Gibson Byrdland, not a 335, but even more expensive if I'm not mistaken. Ted Nugent is also famous for playing Byrdland guitars. And yes, John played it well, never heard him play in that style before.
Man I wish I was old enough at the time to beg my parents to go see this in person. BB is one of a kind and I can only hope to have the chance to see the people he’s performing with in concert.
Comparing the talents of these guitarists is pointless. They all have their roots in blues music. What's important is listening to their interpretations of blues and enjoying it! If you don't enjoy their particular style, that's fine. But don't compare them based on who is better or worse. The fact of the matter is that they are all unique and amazing in their own way! Just enjoy the music folks.
Chase Fickett any comparison can be limited to what the audience feelsas the artist makes "his thing".whatever is the context I think "natural" musicians are more effective than just scholar ones because they do feel music . ..whatever the instrument they choose .Lot of "good" guitarists are not good musicians !

My wife and I had the honor to see BB three years ago, He is getting up there but he still spills out all his love to everyone. He truly is the greatest. We love you BB. you are a true genuine person.

what an amazing performance by some supremely talented musicians, each with their own distinctive voice and style. puzzles me as to why people have to argue about who's this and who is that. just listen and enjoy, glad we have Jm and The Tedeschi Trucks band to carry on the Blues now that BB is gone

John Mayer is my generations guitar hero, whether you like it or not. He looks up to people like SRV and BB, and we look up to Mayer as well as people like BB :) guitar playing is a beautiful art

Trucks is so good I weep. As for the arguments and comparisons, Eric Clapton said John Mayer is a "Master at the guitar." BB is sitting with him on stage. You can't argue with that and not sound like an idiot. They're all amazing musicians. Enjoy the music
We saw BB at The Greek in LA around the same time. It was uh-mazing, but but the Trucks' and Mayer weren't there that night. Much love in the crowd regardless. And BB was a smart-ass absolutely. God bless.

It's interesting. I don't think B.B. King likes John Mayer much. I've seen other videos of them playing together and I get the impression that it's a weird dynamic. If you've ever heard Mayer's trio album you know that B.B. is a HUGE hero of John's, but it seems as though B.B. isn't too fond of him. It's probably a bit crushing for him. And he leaves the stage early because he doesn't feel welcome. Maybe I'm just reading too far into it... but that's what I've gathered.

And let's be honest Trucks ate him for lunch in this gig. And possibly also cause John is a douchebag. I won't be factitious enough to say John is a bad guitarist he's great. But not nearly as good as he likes to think he is, or his fans for that matter. He's not the second coming of Hendrix, he's not as original as Trucks, and he can't shred like Van Halen or Guthrie Govan. In fact Johnny Lang is better than him. John is great at that smooth blues stuff. Which to me, smooth blues is like smooth jazz, doesn't kick as hard. Don't get me wrong in his nice of mass appealing blues influenced smooth stuff he's a God. Outside. He's a lol.
King and Mayer have worked together a lot. Mayer also features on one of King´s studio albums. Mayer wasn´t part of King´s crew during the tour that Trucks and Tedeschi were on. Its the same with guys like Doyle Bramhall II who plays with Clapton a lot. Mayer just has his own thing going on; different music, different scene and that´s fine.

nuendo2496 Mayer isn't a great guitarist because he's technically better than everyone else, he's a great guitarist because the way he plays, his choice of notes, style and eloquation are great. If you go into any guitar shop there will always be a guitar wizard who is technically better than most of the guys out there, but he will never make it in the music world because no one really cares to hear a thousand notes per second of weird strange noises all the time, that's not what great music is. I've seen tonnes of amazing technical guitarist but none of them have been as great as Mayer and only appeal to shredding fanatics.
go over and check out JM's berkley session. If there is one thing I hate, it's ignorance. JM is a highly educated bluesman. So are JB and Trucks. That is where their similarities end. They embody the pillars of modern blues, and in a generation that is responsible for korn, linkin park, and other atrocities that can't even spell their names right, they are fostering a tradition older than your grandma. They all deserve our respect and adoration. My favorite flavor is JM, but I am a Strat/Fender guy. Most of us that gravitate to a strat will identify more with JM's playing/sound. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate Trucks and JB any less. They are all good enough Eric Clapton, so they are alright in my book. I'm going to introduce the "Dallas Cowboys Fan" Paradigm: If you spend as much time as some of you do on every JM post cursing him, you might actually be a JM fan in denial. You should have that looked at.
I can respect his guitar skills, but that's about it. He's big because of his pop music and doing a great job at copping other guitarists. If that's all it takes for adoration from you, fine, but I need a lot more out of a musician. I'm bored by those who just do everything I've heard before. I like the innovators who want to make their own name and make their own contributions to guitar. He's adored mainly by the pop realm who don't know much about the blues.
wesley johnson Spot on. John sounds like John and he has given a lot to the blues we are breathing today. And even if you are not a fan of his you still gotta respect him. Because he is a musician writing his own material, from chords to lyrics and all in a innovative way. However if this is too hard to accept it's not a wonder that the music industry is the way it is today.
