BBC2 closing down after the over more than 12 hours lasting music special "Rock Around The Clock", somewhere in 1986. Exact recording date unknown to me... Source: Betamax
Less than an hour away before BBC1 starts programmes for the day with Breakfast Time. That's fierce late in the morning for a TV channel to be closing down, even today.
I vaguely remember this being on at the time but did not see it though I am sure. I do remember though it being listed or shown in the Radio Times though. Thank you anyway!!
The date would have been early hours of Sunday 21st September 1986 when the show finish on BBC2 on the day of my 13th birthday, i'm now almost 50 years old as of 2023
With shows like this being on late did the evening shift announcers stay on late to 6am or what way did this work? surely they had some sleep the announcer? can anyone clarify this?
Either an extra long evening shift or the announcer there for the early morning Open University programmes would start earlier than usual to take over from the announcer finishing their night shift. Rock Around the Clock was a live programme so could not be left at any point without an announcer to cover for if something went wrong. Either way it was only once a year, wouldn't do the announcers much harm to their sleeping patterns.
