Otto Frank was a very smart man. Fleeing Germany when Hitler came to power and building the annex before hand in fear of going into hiding. He was definitely a man who put his family first. Hes the type of father I aspire to be one day.

Natasha Whitmore I agree. I mean it’s frustrating not being able to go anywhere but we still can if we have to. We just have to wear masks and social distance. When it first happened I thought of Anne but things were so much harder for them. I wonder if they will ever find out who betrayed them. I would have loved to have met Anne. She and I both love to write and were brought up by similar parents and some of the same values and beliefs. I dream of being a successful self published author because of her I am never giving up that dream.

I’m nobody to just say how Anne Franks father was feeling. But I think do understand. When he found out Anne wrote a diary he was so hesitant to open it, let alone read it. A flood of memories and realization came to him making him so happy and sad all at once. I know he was determined to make Anne’s dreams come true. In an impossible way to explain I really do understand in my own way

Even better if they had emigrated to Switzerland. Some of their extended family survived in Swiss. Unfortunately, Otto Frank tried to unsuccessfully to emigrate to USA. But listening to so many stories, once the Nazi dominated and took over Poland, it was extremely difficult to emigrate. Timing and location were paramount to surviving or evading the Nazi regime. So many who went into hiding were eventually caught or betrayed.

One of Otto Frank's closest friends was his college roommate, Nathan Strauss, son of one of the founders of Macy's (and nephew of Isidor Strauss, who died on the Titanic). Otto actually worked for the Macy's in New York for a while until his father died and he returned to Germany. When Otto was desperate to save his family, he contacted his old friend Nathan in the hopes that he could use his political pull to help them get into the United States. By all accounts, Nathan pulled out all the stops, but despite his considerable pull, was unsuccessful. Ironically, one of the factors working against Otto was the fact that he was a decorated veteran of World War I, in which he fought for Germany; the country that turned so cruelly against him and his family. When this failed, Nathan tried to get them visa to Cuba, and this was also unsuccessful. And we all know, the Franks eventually settled in Amsterdam, which was the beginning of the end for this family. I can't help but think of what might have been if things had worked out differently for the Franks and so many other people who were murdered during the Holocaust.

@@ozdavemcgee2079 Are you serious? How can you not understand? Perhaps you should 'see a psych' about your lack of imagination and empathy? OK, so what I think the OP is saying is that when she walks past the places associated with AF, sees the buildings and reads the names of the streets named after her, etc, Anne inevitably passes through her consciousness for those moments. As well as, of course, the consciousness of the thousands of others who visit each year or live nearby. Anyone who's read her diary or heard her story would feel the same, to some degree. So, in a way, Anne got her wish that the thoughts and feelings she poured into her writing might mean that she would live on in people's minds and hearts after her death. She had hoped to live on and write books and articles one day and that she could make people happy that way. She didn't know then, that it would be her diary for which she's be remembered, and people would be so sad to know from reading it what happened to her and her family. But because of Anne and her diary, the victims of the terrible crimes that were committed against the Jews and others in WWII have been forever made real and human, and simply unforgettable.

I do miss Miep Gies being mentioned. Without her the diary would never be found, kept and eventually published. She also together with her husband gave Otto a place to stay for eight years after the war. Until he married Eva Schloss her mother and she became a step sister of Anne Frank. One recent detail I discovered is that Miep Gies (like Eva Schloss) came from Vienna, and this probably saved both her live and the diary. The SS officer in charge of the raid of the achterhuis also came from Vienna. Once Miep heard his accent she used this fact to have a better change of surviving.

An excellent summary, age suitable while also not holding back from the horrific truths involved. Ultimately it successfully illustrates how Anne’s life, while tragically cut short, still gave all future generations one of the most important humanitarian works in history and inspiration for others to fulfil their own lives in peaceful and positive ways opposing all forms of prejudice. Tomorrow will be a very important and very moving day for me and my family.

Remember Anne was emaciated, starved and was made believe the Germans were winning the war. She thought all her family were dead, now that Margot died days before.. It broke her spirit. Typhus is deadly, and it's said Anne was losing her sanity close to her death. She threw away all her clothes and was wrapped in just a blanket in one of the coldest Winter's in history, and was crawling with lice. The whole ordeal obviously broke the girl, and her sister Margot. Their naked bodies were later thrown into mass graves. It's absolutely crazy the whole thing, and all because they were different than Hitler's idea of the right society. Madness!

Peace to All: I'm way passed middle-age, and saw the dramatized version of Anne Frank's story when it first hit the cinema. She was portrayed by actress Molly Perkins, along with a cast of other notables of the time. Thereafter, in school, I read the play. Later, with other adults we heard from survivors that presented Anne's point of view, through the readings, analysis, and explanation of her perspective (and why). Instrumental in expanding the story, is also taking a look at interviews with Miep Guise. She and her husband initially helped Anne's family, and additionally those that sheltered with them, for the time. Miep survived the war, later hid Anne's diary, which was eventually revealed, analyzed, and rendered for publication. I utilized the information and extremely intimate account of Anne Frank's Diary, which details and describes aspects of her experience. As an educator, writer, and lecturer, I feel learning this story is indispensable. It reflects the direct essence of so many, through the ages. Other individuals, and groups since ancient times, sacrificed and suffered similar fates. There's a wealth of material produced the world over, which was generated by this young woman's account that it will affect generations to come. Anne Frank's [Anna Frank's] aspirations (were) are no different than any young adult's, desires, goals, and hopes. Accordingly, she had a mind to be a writer, and an author in her life time. She kept this view against extenuating odds, circumstances, and tragedy. The odds were unfortunately against her. It seems when we relive her story, as her voice speaks to us, we want her to achieve what she desires, and we're urgently compelled that the outcome would be predictably different... Historically speaking, she has posthumously achieved her goal! Next: Previously, some of my students read excerpts, and saw the documentaries on Anne Frank's life. Subsequently, they were able to author and produce some of the most exceptional projects! Their work echoed their own experiences during this COVID-19 pandemic: curfew, lock down, isolation, depression, social distancing, prejudice, discrimination, racism, socio-political injustice, and death! This was incredible, and pardon me for saying so. Their comparative analogies, and personal stories were based on what they learned about this young dynamic human being [Anna Frank]. They also disregarded some of the detractions they learned about the story, in general. At best, those things were considered unimportant, insensitive, or obfuscated statements. Obviously, they were intelligent enough to comprehend that their experiences during COVID-19, were actually nothing like the trauma, systemic torment, murder, inhumanity that Anne, her family members, and all others like them were subjected to. It was the ultimate insult to all that it means to be a human being! This was a horrid, and despicable stain on the time line of human history. Regardless of Anne's personal background, religious beliefs, and practices... she was human. Her life and the lives of others still resonate, and speak to us; there she is in space and time, in real life, briefly captured on film, in an array of photographs, in the words, and letters [original and translated words] of what we know to be her diary. There's her innocence, her smile, her bright face, her soft features, her expressive eyes, the dramatization of her life, that of her family's, friends, and acquaintances... Finally: Do we hear, do we listen, do we know, do we acknowledge, do we comprehend, do we see, are we voiceless? There's a key in all that she says, and it summarizes some of the injustices, and man's inhumanity to man that still prevails to today. I thank everyone for allowing me to express my views and opinion. Peace Be Upon You All!

I honestly wonder how she would've actually felt about having her diary published. I mean it did accomplish her goal of living beyond her death, and it's definitely a really important artifact from the holocaust, but as a 13 year old girl reading her diary I thought I would feel mortified having my diary published.

This is an extraordinary diary and an extraordinary young woman. Anne heard the BBC broadcasts from London of the exiled Dutch royal family and Prime Minister including appeals for diaries and notes to be retained for post war understanding of living under Nazi occupation. It inspired Anne to revisit her previous entries, be critical about her own writing and revise them. She kept her original diary and an edited improved version i suppose in line with her journalistic aspirations. Her father eventually published a 3rd version with some of the more very personal elements removed, not only being concerned about her daughter but also for details concerning others, especially considering the proximity in time initially. The full diary is so excellently written and so effectively opens a door to Anne’s mind, character and desires, that the reader concludes this is a most important humanitarian artefact needing to be shared as widely as possible. And that Anne would be proud to have that legacy. I urge anyone to read the full diary if they haven’t already.

Reading some of these comments it appears that humanity hasn't advanced from the dark days of the 40s - the Third Reich, when all this happened - people more concerned about the cat, stating that Anne never existed, etc. How sad!!! The scary thing is many can't imagine how such things could have happened then - but I am afraid that they can still happen now - overall, the world hasn't gotten any better. God Bless those rare souls like Anne, whose beautiful spirit rose above the madness and bless those who tried/try to make a difference.
