I had the absolute pleasure to work on BBC Election 2024, and more specifically on most of the real-time 3D graphics alongside some exceptionally talented colleagues (Steve Mantz, Tony Sinclair, Ammar Zuhair) , including both augmented reality set extensions and the exit poll reveal for Studio B in London's Broadcasting House, but also Jeremy V.'s famous swingometer and other XR graphics in Cardiff's Central Square building.
The Cardiff project was unique as it featured a blend of traditional chroma key, XR virtual production using an LED volume, and a frame-multiplexing LED capable of sending different images to different cameras, but also allowing for Jeremy Vine to have his own "presenter" view, which allowed him to see the various graphics he was presenting, but also let us hide some useful guides and hints which were not visible to the audience.
We also tried to create a seamless blend of the virtual elements and the real building, to show off the scale of Cardiff's Central Square office.
Another first was we blended HTML graphics with 3D Virtual Graphics (bet you didn't know that the "battleboard" was a giant web page fed over NDI...), with thanks to the HTML team Max Blaber, Héctor Manteca, Seán Óg Cafferkey and David Hughes.
Also huge thanks to Nick Davey and Sue Vágó for giving us the chance to do this, Oli Powell, Andrew Harris and Alex Kessling for their spot on design guidance, Billy Hooke, Alastair Campbell and Chris Cook for their stellar direction, Sam Woodhouse and Benedict Watt for their wealth of editorial knowledge, Harrison Castle and Aidan Flanagan who without them we would not have been able to do this (literally), and Charlie Kitcher for managing the whole thing. Lastly a big thank you to everyone who worked on this, from the BBC team, the nations designers who all contributed back to the national programme, and to all the external suppliers and contractors, it's been a pleasure!

A great graphical product during the broadcast. The virtual #10 on the side of the studio normally behind the camera was a particularly nice touch -- especially that "sunrise" arc shot just before 6AM. When I first heard they were just going to repurpose Studio B vs building a custom set I was a bit disappointed, but the extended graphics made it feel like an almost new space.

Incredible work! Loved seeing this all played out - super smooth! Fascinating reading what was mentioned about needing to balance quality vs what the engines could do, seemed like a lot of churning happening! Does this also explain the slight lag in animation with the constituencies changing colour (1:08)? And given the size of the atrium in Central Square the graphics coverage of that area (incl the balcony) must have been pretty hefty! Is it also the same tech set up (tracking and software) used in both NBH and CSq? Also appreciating the 'unpretty-fied' names used for each location at 1:16; purely from an aesthetics standpoint it keeps it quite techy for the casual viewer, a further example of the scale of the operation.

@ThomasDoukinitsas 29 дней назад
Hello and thanks for your comment. Yes, the engines were trying to do quite a bit of processing when they received data (essentially the data contains information about the current state of constituencies, so the scene script has to decide a lot about animations and how to get from one state to another). The slight lag you mentioned is probably the engine receiving data, and the script running and deciding what it needs to do. The tech set up is similar in some aspects (same rendering technology), but also had quite a few differences (tracking, use of LED vs chroma key etc).

why cant we have the 2005 tony blair one?
@_Madfly
@_Madfly Месяц назад
The Downing Street CGI looks like its being rendered in a lower resolution than is being broadcast. You can almost see the pixels.
@ThomasDoukinitsas
@ThomasDoukinitsas Месяц назад
@@_Madfly We had to do a lot of quality Vs performance balancing to get the graphics to render at a steady 50i, as the graphics engines not only had to render the graphics, but also do data parsing, chroma keying (as it was done internally on the engine), lens distortion and tracking data, plus all the reverse projections required for the LED. However in the future we'd like to see what's possible to increase the fidelity of the graphics.

Good stuff! Is there a version of the 3d hex map for the actual results?
@ThomasDoukinitsas
@ThomasDoukinitsas Месяц назад
The hex map in the scene could display those results, as the custom control software was just sending a list of constituencies with colour and height information... however I'm not sure if it got used on the night, possibly a "forecast" version was used that was very close to the final results as there were only a few left. But the graphic was definitely built to also do that.

This was a weird election. A party that barely got more than a third of the vote got two-thirds of the seats, and a party that received the third most votes wound up with fewer seats than a regional party that pointedly refuses to take them. You have to love FPTP.
