As you would have seen it on the night*, here is the BBC's coverage of the 1997 election. Presented by David Dimbleby with Peter Snow, Anthony King and Peter Kellner doing analysis, Robin Oakley commenting on the political impact, Jeremy Paxman conducting interviews, and a host of reporters.
This section runs from 2 AM to 3 AM on Friday 2 May.
* This election coverage is elsewhere on RU-vid but without the onscreen results graphics that were visible to viewers on the night. Near the start of this section is where VHS tapes were switched over, but I've used the 2017 graphic-less showing to make it seemless; there were no results flashed up in the missing part.

@19.20 That Returning Officer had a rod up his arse, threatening to kick out anyone who made the slightest noise. Like a referee who thinks everyone paid to see him do his refereeing

IDS cut off mid sentence to listen to Edwina Currie. 1990s Conservative Party defined right there.

in fairness, IDS was in the studio and Currie was off location so they probably wanted to hear her before she disappeared.

The 1997 elections is revealing. The Tories had won 5 consecutive elections and have been governing for a long time. It is the nature democracies to give a different political party to govern the country. You can hear the disunity in the Tory Party from the far right wing of the Conservatives. Far right members like Ian Duncan-Smith who opposed the policies of the Tories and John Major. Sounds exactly like what Theresa May had to deal with in 2017 from the same rebellious Tories. Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown expressed concerns about tribalism between different political parties. But within the Tory Party itself there is division. It should not be surprising that Tony Blair was able to lead the Labour Party to an overwhelming victory. If the people of the UK is fed up with the current Tory government then Keir Starmer and Labour will probably be swept into government in 2024. Who knows maybe the Liberal Democrats will be swept into power in 2024. At least in a democracy when the people get fed up with one political party they can bring a different political party to govern.

He was not a politician. He was a broadcaster, a journalist. All he wanted to do was to give a bloody nose to that revolting Neil Hamilton, that corrupt right winger, and he did it.
