In the second of a three part series of special programmes from Australia, Hardtalk takes a look at the country's extraordinary resources boom. Thanks to China's insatiable demand for coal, iron ore and other commodities the Australian economy has avoided the economic woes of the west and continues. Filmed by Cameraman Andrew Psarianos.

If Clive Palmer only eats one meal a day it must be a huge one

He's a big boy, that's for sure... But I'm guessing he can afford more than one meal a day, and he hasn't skipped too many meals in his time.

Now, it has been ten years since this episode was published here... WA, to be exact, the whole of Australia is welcoming another resources boom just for the same reason...

The trouble with this is .. these companies don’t pay enough tax ..,even in WA we have thousands of homeless people that although working can not afford to rent or buy the houses that because of foreign investors are grossly overpriced . The people of Australia are not benefiting

In the long run, the score settled(in terms of economic prosperity) for China against Australia will be 10 : 2. The Australian political forces need to open their eyes quick...

We shouldn't be mistaking mining lottery winning with actual skill, Clive. As history has clearly borne out.

At 5:40 he says that Sinosteel needs the permission of the Aboriginals, this is not true. The Native Title legislation only gives the Aboriginals 'the right to negotiate', if after 60 days it has not come to an agreement it is sent to the courts to decide

we call this an introduction, so since eight years has the story written ! Also why this ore but not other have covered, the list is long in Australia. Hopefully, the story will include australian officials, other countries officials who buy production, mining in general and how australian has been dealing with mining world, also jobs that the mining industry would offer, how mining companies are granted bets, and who are the losers in such business.

I think Australia should nationalize all of its natural resources and, as an example, start manufacturing steel, aluminum, etc. Chinese proverb: you have to put your own house in order before you can help others.

Well facts are we, the average guy in the street never felt any increase in lifestyle or incomes! the few specially selected silvertails who own the mines alongside our totally inept governments made sure only a few felt or made anything!

Well if you are interested, the Chinese have invested heavily in Australian Commodities, Iron, Copper, Zinc to name a few, they have bought farms for crops, dairies for milk, property for investment. They rule over us yet we think we are free. We have alot to learn, We have sold ourselves short I believe. China have a commanding Navy with new War Ships & First Class undetectable Diesel Submarines. This is just the start.. I think America are worried, even putting a base here in Australia.

These mines may put a major boom in the Australain economy but really at what price? A common misconception of the Australain environment especially that of the outback is that its empty really this idea couldnt be farther from the truth Australia is one of the most under studied biomes in the world new and more often than anywhere else revolutionary discoveries are made constantly these mines drasticly alter the landscape its truly untelling how much has been lost already

mining provides so much move then just altering the landscape. mining provides infrastructure for rural areas, it helped immigration back in the eureka stockade and increased tourism, it generates australias income and contributes millions to the economy, mining helps with foreign affairs and our trading without it we would be nothing. mining is becoming more and more sustainable. people that don't live near a mining town or have never even lived in a mining town believe the stigmas the media puts on mining and haven't experienced mining for themselves.

if there is only some drawing, trop it down, are they valuable? earth is going to change , it is inevitable, no need to concer too much.. question: think about this way, if China doesn't buy Aussie's resource. What will happened to Australia??? btw, individual Chinese people doesn't represent Communist party' mate!~ party is just the leader, not elected, but in some sense, they are the force that society can run in the long term.
