Thankyou for uploading these broadcasts. Although snippets are used on numerous documentaries, to actually listen to these and create my own picture has been a real experience. Also the radio slipping off tune with bitsfrom other stations able to be heard is a blast from radios character of the past, adding to the overall character.
My grandmother had a lovely Philco cabinet radio, one of the last things her husband bought her before his unexpected passing on 12/31/39. I loved listening to it, wanted it when she passed but my bastard uncle trashed it along with almost of her other keepsakes when she passed in 1980.

The printing of books and broadcast of television have been influential, but I’d argue that radio has been more accessible and important to the human world. It also has atmosphere of mystery. I built my first shortwave receiver as a child and became hooked on the BBC. Thank you.
That accent was pretty much an invention of the BBC (or earlier, i'm not entirely sure). Called Received Pronunciation (RP) it was created because on early radio voices needed to be clear and crisp.
I mentioned this on the JFK assassination news reports on the BBC Home Service, RP is the only clear speech that RU-vid subtitling spells words out correctly about 99% of the time.
BBC News but mostly a French news broadcast in English. That is VERY cool because their perspective comes through loud and clear. You can just feel through the reporting of political and government statements how anxious they were that this all just go away, that last ditch efforts for peace succeed and how they weren’t beating their Patriotic chests about it.

Agreed. The second segment sounded like it was either BBC-Poland, or Polish national broadcast via shortwave and the next segment, German national radio, also via shortwave. You can tell by the varying volume and static which were both symptomatic of shortwave reception.
I wonder which frequency this was recorded from? Sounds like possibly 1215kHz AM what with the occasional fading signal and bursts in audio. I wouldn't think it was Long Wave. 🤔
This broadcast is all the more sad that it relates the premisces of a war which could have been avoided, had France had the intelligent and prediction skills , courage, and ability to foresee what was going to happen with courage... some did, but thoses who idn't were listened to instead knew nothing, and got totally lost as the events started to happen to quickly. German soldiers stunk to high heaven in ww2. I've been told by my grandfather and read acconts of several allied troops, that the Germans could be smelled from yards away. I've also read that rhe POW camps that held German POW's stunk like a giant foot and men's locker room, it was so strong that soldiers could smell the POW camp while approaching from several hundred yarda away. There was a saying amongst the allied soldiers. " Sniff out the Nazis and you'll find them" and 90% of the time that was the case.

Fascinating stuff. One question: what is the strange background noise? Sounds like shrill squealing . . . sometimes another station, perhaps? And where and how were these recorded?
I believe the background noise relates to the signal strength but can not say exactly what causes the noise. Also, I am not sure where or how these recordings were made. I would be very interested to know myself. I could only guess that it was recorded somewhere in Europe but it could easily be from any place on the planet. This is my idea only, but I guess the BBC recorded these as part of the process of broadcasting around the world. So that one station would broadcast and another station hundreds or thousands of miles away records the transmission and then replays it and the next station does the same, etc, etc. That would make sense but I don't know this for a fact. Sorry I could not answer your question.
Thanks for your reply. At times it sounds like there might be some bleed through from other stations . . . at other times I can tell what it is. Maybe an expert in radio would now. I read somewhere that there was a facility in Maryland that recorded these transmissions for the gov't, at least the German ones, but I can't be sure.
I believe they would have been recorded in Broadcasting House at the time of transmission. There were not recorded on disc but on very early wire. This accounts for the background noise. It is not the noise of transmission because they were recorded as they were broadcast, not 'off the air' at another location. So there could have been no interference from another station. The use of wire facilitated recording of more than the four or five minutes that could be put on a direct disc.

Is there any way you could put this back up again reupload it is what I mean but maybe could you try to fix the sound so it'll be a little more clear have a little bit more louder. It's not a play. These were off-air live radio recordings made in September 1939, so they cannot be any better than this. The first is BBC, maybe Bruce Belfrage or Lionel Marion reading the news. The following sections are not BBC, and the speakers are not English, so they are overseas Shortwave broadcasts, with static crashes, adjacent channel interference, fading and phase distortion, not the better quality local Medium Wave broadcast of the first section. Not sure about the second section, but his accent has Irish overtones with mid-European pronunciation. The third section is almost certainly Warsaw / Poland. The fourth section is Germany. - They announce it. The final section is also Germany, as announced.
Are you using ear phones or do you have RU-vid plugged into high quality high fidelity audio with good speakers? Is the volume high enough? Digitally modifying it would spoil the authentic sound that listeners heard in 1939. The recoding is remarkably good for the time.
