BBC1 News coverage of the opening of the Channel Tunnel recorded on 19th May 1994. The Queen travels to Calais on a Eurostar passenger train from London Waterloo and after a short opening ceremony, returns with President Mitterand in her Rolls Royce on a vehicle shuttle. I believe the Channel Tunnel opened for service trains later in 1994.

I was born in 1987 before the tunnel opened but I first travelled on it in 1994.

This opened on the day my baby sister was born it's mentioned in her baby book 😉 she's 21 this year.

@kernals12 I think a road bridge and/or a tunnel were considered when the cross Channel link was first talked about but were dropped as a rail tunnel worked out to be the cheapest and the easiest to build

As for the Brits driving on the left--I noticed that Her Majesty's train entered the tunnel on the left and emerged on the right. Was this a coincidence? I am thinking that I read somewhere that the trains do indeed switch sides at some point under the tunnel.

I think it must be something to do with the footage they used - trains in both the UK and France drive on the left (even though French road traffic is on the right), and there is no rail crossover in the Channel Tunnel.

there are crossovers in the tunnel (two points to be exact) but they are for if a section is closed for maintenance or breakdowns

As I understand it, on train lines built by the English, trains usually drive on the left side. If not they often drive on the right side.

If it weren't for Britain driving on the left, do you think they would have built bridge or car tunnel rather than a train tunnel?

They can't ventilate a tunnel this deep under the sea and this long, that's why only a rail tunnel was built-people travelling by cars would simply suffocate.
