Kevin O'Sullivan and Rebecca Ryan from Defund The BBC, criticise the broadcaster's extensive coverage of the Glastonbury Festival, arguing that the organization's priorities are misplaced and its justifications for the large staff presence and hours of coverage are unjustified.
They highlight the contrast between the BBC's lavish spending on the festival and its treatment of pensioners, who are bullied into paying the TV licence fee.
"The BBC are obsessed with Glastonbury, probably because it's so middle class."

@@lucius4556I couldn't have put it better myself... I first went to Glastonbury festival back in 1971, I was 11 years of age and went there with my sister. It was a quid to get in and Michael Eavis gave away free milk.. I was a big Hawkwind fan and only went to see them perform, but also saw Joan Baez, Gong and a few others.. Pink Floyd were meant to be playing there but they cancelled due to stage not being sufficient for their equipment... Now I'm 64 years old and will confess I've never heard of probably 90% of the bands that are performing this year..... I live not far from Pilton and we call it "The 3 C's Festival" where I live..... Commercialised Corporate Crap festival.

I was at Glastonbury in 1972 when the festival was a highly spiritual gathering of beautiful people. It is now just another huge greedy money making sham. How sad and empty life is becoming for the empty minded young people of today. Sad thing is they don't even know what they are missing.

He's been mentioned numerous times and no one goes daft. Billy Bragg runs a stage called the left field, the music is all left wing punk but during the day they have political debate between politicians from both sides (it would be boring if it was only the left) and numerous Conservative and Brexit part and UKIP representative join in. Did you stay at the pyramid stage? That's the worst place to be. There are so many stages that no matter what your taste, there's always something you'll enjoy. I'm an old punk/metal head and if you look at the BBC coverage you'd think there's nothing for me but on the smaller stages I've seen old New York hardcore punk bands, British grind core pioneers, industrial metal, UK punk legends and great stuff I'd never heard of before. I've performed there as well and that was a whole heap of fun, playing sludge metal to a couple hundred people in a field, I've never laughed so much while playing.

@stevec6427 Yes. But I also got around. You are right. There is some good music to be caught at the other sites. I was just talking about the festival on the whole. It definitely has a very middle-class vibe to it now. A far cry from what it would have been when it was established. And the main lineup on the pyramid was underwhelming. I fear it has just become about making as much money as possible. I now tend to go abroad. I've been to some brilliant festivals in Belgium and the Netherlands. Including Defqon. Which was an absolute riot. And a fraction of the price.

This has all happened since his daughter took over, and the creators of the festival ( traveller's) were permanently banned because of the actions of a few bad apples. It was the travellerr's/ peace convoy that made glastonbury what it was. Now, it is just another upper middle class pop music event with has been headling artists, making our ears bleed with their croaky singing

I'm voting Reform, BUT. The rich are international, owning factories and business all over the world, the poor of the third world work in those factories.The reason why Keir Starmer doesn't understand the working class is because there are no working class in Britain, almost everyone is middle class. The North Sea Jazz Festival sell 3 day weekend tickets/passes before the line up is announced and they are usually gone within hours. After that it's daily tickets at exorbitant prices😢😂

I should think most folk couldn’t give a tinker’s cuss how the BBC spends money PROVIDED they’re not mandated by law to have to pay for it. Eg, folk don’t care what ITV pays its ‘stars’.

Living in the area i hate it. The roads are blocked. The people that go are total asshole's who think they are so.much better than the locals. When the Tommy event in London happened the area was cleaner then before. Look at Glastonbury and the rubbish they leave. I think the farm should have to compensate every local person at least £ 50.000 each.

Glasto - for people who wear Le Chameau wellies, wouldn't know a good tune if it hit them on the head, support the music industry by downloading illegally, and can't be bothered to finished words like BBC sports commentators who refer to pens in the prem! All the pain and cost of getting a ticket to watch the back of a flag whist a band you have no interest in lip sync to a backing track. BBC licensing fee has little to do with what the event actually represents but keeps the BBC aligned with the chardonnay set.

The BBC show so much of Glastonbury because the ratings are up there with the biggest sporting events and they make money selling coverage to networks overseas. The number of bands in one place means loads of coverage of loads of bands for a relatively low cost and they'll repeat performances on BBC4 several times over several years. I watched a Stooges performance from over a decade ago last week and it was absolutely brilliant

My sisters friends worked as chambermaids at one of the hotels they were staying at years ago...they said there were very young girls in and out of the dj and crews rooms every night! (Did love listening to the roadshow though)
