Temporary Accommodation
A Really interesting episode which exposes flaws in the system and how private organisations are profiting from the vulnerable. £1.1 Billion in fact, but I think its much much more.
I do not own the rights to this video and the rights are owed by BBC but uploading under our rights to public service broadcasts and my role as a housing campaigner.
We should be looking into companies like Baron Homes Corporation in Brighton and Hove who are one of the biggest private providers.

Maybe the councils should buy the office buildings and convert them into proper flats. It would save them money in the long run.

Government have changed planning laws for this, and removed the council borrowing cap, to allow the for.
@nicholasr39
@nicholasr39 11 месяцев назад
Plus the owners of the buildings want far too much any council can afford. It doesn't have to be a council, the government can set up its own social housing service and obtain stock but it won't. It can but it won't. I don't think it should be councils who should solely be responsible, this idea itself can cause homelessness because councils require you to be living within a Borough for a minimum of 5 years before they will help you. The idea of council housing needs to expand to social housing rather than using the private sector because its not value for money for anyone except the people receiving the money. I'm currently in a HMO and the landlord is failing to evict someone who is making life hell for the rest of us, so the council only offer me another HMO which nearly £300 more than what I am paying which means Universal Credit.....taxpayers will have to cough up the rest of my upkeep to keep a greedy landlord in business

172 flats x £750/month = £222,40/month. If they only have 4 staff working the office & grounds, they're paying the staff a tiny amount, whilst the owners/people in the head office are making a killing. Making only 2% profit has got to be an absolute lie. They could pay several more guards & make that place safe, while making their claimed 2% profit.

It can't - it only grows 61% of the food it needs to feed its population, and that's the official figures. 5th richest my arse, it's powered by worthless fiat and will soon collapse as the rest of the world is calling time on its habit of printing its currency into oblivion, and quite right too.

Very true. Here in Brighton and Hove over 113 homeless housed people have died. Its mass neglect and gatekeeping. Its inhumane in immoral, councils need reform. We need to see people with lived experience leading the way. Change is due, cant keep allowing this, whatever peoples views are, we have to see the humans and treat any trauma which led to homelessness and in some cases addiction, self medication as people are dying in these places, suicides, overdoes and serious health issues relating. Too many people have a career interest in homelessness this needs to be the thing council’s aim to eradicate, close down and divert all money into building the homes and in-house decent support. This can only work with reforms, and the third sector will lobby, as they wont want it to end. Reunification of these services but in-house, too much costly duplication

I was in a Hostel this time last year and the drugs and alcohol and they had kids in there was awful. We were supposed to get support that depended on what support staff you have been given. I was grateful to have a roof over my head but for me (I’m autistic adhd and bipolar) it was awful. To the point where it would have been so easy to get drugs or off myself. The worst thing was someone died and wasn’t checked on in 2 days. Still breaks my heart he died and wasn’t found for 2 days when you were meant to have been seen at least once a day. We had a room with a camp-bed and a shared kitchen and they wanted £220 a week per room. That’s more than my one bedroom flat I have now. It’s all just about ££££

I feel fell victim to a scam 2 years ago and only 2 months after I moved in with my partner (after trying to leave an abusive home my whole life) he threw me out. After trying to stay with family and having to let a morbidly obese man sleep with me for a roof over my head then losing my live in job partly due to my employer relocating and severe illness, I found myself sleeping on the floor in a hostel for 6 weeks(didn’t even have my own room or access to a kitchen so was reusing plates, cups and cutlery for a week. Within the first week someone was stabbed, there were fights and screaming matches with police and paramedics attending daily, I was asked to sell drugs and had an unwanted sexual advance by another resident (I have a history of child abuse and sexual assault). The fire alarms went off constantly (I am autistic, this was torture). Since I moved to another hostel it feels like a prison where they’re overly strict which is the opposite extreme, but somehow there is still extreme violence and the security/fire alarms set off every 10 days or so, so we’re piled out in the car park with police and fire engine at 4 in the morning wondering what the hell is happening this time. Considering the amount of hoops I had to jump through proving my multiple health issues and long history of abuse, domestic violence and trauma Since early childhood to be able to stay at those hostels, being in the most vulnerable group with no criminal record, I have no idea how/why I was housed with violent criminals with a history of sex offences, hard drug use etc. Cannabis is the least of their concerns (Better than taking Valium or diphenhydramine to help you sleep) but the amount of people drinking and shooting up is. There’s a silverfish infestation but that’s better than the maggot infestation that was an issue before I came here. I was paranoid about using the ancient looking cooker to begin with and on the 3rd time using the hob in as many months there was a huge bang and a white flash. The engineer that came a few days later shower me that at the back of the cooker it was all charred and the melted plastic telling me I was extremely lucky to not have had a fire in my hands. haven’t had a cooker since Monday night and after learning that my next door neighbour had the saw, thing happen, I am concerned about the safety of all the appliances throughout the building.

Is it really all about the quality of the accommodation being offered? Watching this Panorama report, it seems that there are some anti-social "residents" who would make living anywhere an absolute nightmare for their neighbours, and that is a problem that won't be solved by offering up better accommodation.

Councils and the government should be building and owning affordable social housing. Make the developers looks like idiots for buying up office blocks and hoping to make their money back in 18 months of rent. It's the government's fault that this is the case. They could build better housing, but they don't. They could lease better housing, but they don't. They could refuse to lease the office blocks until they are brought up to minimum standards, but they don't. It is 100% the government's fault that people live like this.

Masked men chasing them up and down street for drug debts plus they attract others to the house who are struggling with MH issues and prostitution. I go nights with no sleep. @@LabRat6619immigration has nothing to do with the lack of housing. That's down to the Tories, plain and simple. They sold off all the council stock, now there's no housing for those that can't get a mortgage. The country isn't overcrowded either, that's a complete myth. There's plenty of space in the country for housing, but this shower of sh*t in government won't build either 'affordable' housing or social housing. So blaming immigration for government failings is just a distraction used by Tories to deflect attention from their awful record. Now that a lot more fully employed people have to claim benefits to live, they can't blame people on benefits for the country's problems, so they are now after immigrants. It's quite pathetic.

Like if she wasn't spending lots of money on make up, and if she lived in a cheaper part of the country, then she would probably be in a better situation. Like boohoo, the FREE version of housing that hard working people pay a sizeable proportion of their salary for isn't very good?? Who could have guessed? It's not like social housing has ever been fantastic. This should have been on your radar before, during and after having a child (who shouldn't have a dummy in when she's that old tbh).
