Hugh Whitemore's dramatisation of Ian Fleming's 1958 novel. James Bond is sent to investigate a strange disappearance on the island of Jamaica.
A distinguished cast, headed by Toby Stephens and David Suchet, takes part in this 'radio movie' of Ian Fleming's 1958 novel, dramatised by Hugh Whitemore.
Bond is sent to investigate a strange disappearance on the island of Jamaica, and discovers that the heart of the mystery lies with a sinister recluse known as 'Dr. No.' Another chance to hear this classic Bond adventure - the first in Radio 4's ongoing all-star series.

The voice of Dr No was tremendous, effectively portraying an evil supervillain and the story was extremely well written. Loved it!

I disagree. Suchet is a great actor, but his attempt at a super villain Asian accent was awful. Overly forced, accidently cracked badly in a few places, and was very inconsistent compared to the other voice actors. I was shocked they let some of those line deliveries through. Even I wanted to call ‘cut lets do that line again’ a few times.

Such a great adaption. Really captured the magic of Crab Key and the oldschool adventure story feel, like the film. True to the book, it took the time to flesh out the characters, which was somewhat lost in the film. Suchet's Doctor No was terrifying.

Dr.No character was better than the movie version. The actor playing Bond , i like him better than Daniel Craig. I wish they wouldve brought him after Pierce. I enjoy these radio plays. Thank you so much for posting them.

@@TheRealBGregz It is at least conceivable. The movies have not been averse to repeating actors in different roles: see Maud Adams, Joe Don Baker, Charles Gray, Martine Beswicke, Marc Lawrence.

These are so much better than movies because there's no those overly long gun (or other type of) fighting scenes and they concentrate to the storyline.

Very good adaptation generally. My only real criticism is that the ventilation shaft section was too brief. They forgot the knife and lighter that bond managed to pocket during the dinner, and didn’t mention his determination to keep going in the shaft until the heart was torn from his body, or dr no’s men taunting him through windows in the shaft.

I’ve noticed in the comments people either love or hate David Suchet’s performance as Dr. No. I’m curious what those who aren’t fans were expecting or hoping for. I personally enjoyed it. I enjoyed the entire program. Thanks for posting it!

Yes. I agree. The Bond stories are often underrated because of the movies - but I find them wonderfully and sensitively written. This adaptation is so much more respectful of the Ian Fleming original than those silly (but fun) films.

Toby Stephens made a terrific Bond in this audio role. Would have made no sense however, replacing Pierce Brosnan on the live screen because of his role in Die Another Day.

You are absolutely right! Toby Stephens was so persuasive and ,consequently, unforgettable as a villain #GustavGraves, it took him a lot of time to get rid of this cliche! This is 2008 production. A big departure from #GustavGraves, however, brilliantly played...now much more mature, deep,engaging, classical British aristocrat "Bond" voice!🌞🤩👑

@@2msvalkyrie529 For what it's worth (1) Martin Jarvis (the director) was born on 4th August 1941 and this was first broadcast on 24th May 2008 so he would have been 66 when this was made. For what it's worth (2) I didn't like David Suchet's performance either.

I love Suchet, but the voice for Dr No didn’t work at all. It was too forced, ridiculous, and the accent all wrong. Compared to the other character’s excellent performances, Dr No sounded like a 8 year old pretending an evil voice. The director should have stopped it immediately. At least his Belgian accent is excellent. :)

Yes but in Poirot his accent became more and more mannered as the series went on. It became quite bizarre in the last 2 series ? John Moffat nailed it nicely !
