BBC Sport looks back at the career of 'Whispering' Ted Lowe. The much-loved snooker commentator, who died in 2011 at the age of 90, was given a rousing minute's ovation before the start of the 2011 World Championship final at the Crucible in Sheffield.

He only really ever broke character once.... "OUHH YESS!" when Jimmy was losing to Hendry in 1992. Jimmy fluked a red, and Ted just couldn't contain himself. He then remembered he was the Whisperer, and got back down to earth 20 seconds later. Back to soothing voicing. Find the clip and hear it. He was class all the way.

I miss him ireland was a better country when i watched snooker with my dad ! Ted lowe was snooker he made matches great

Respect should go both ways: A former pro who wishes to become an accomplished general commentator and a wordsmith commentator who wishes to give technical shot selection advice. However, then you have the unique Ted Lowe! As John Virgo said (jokingly) "knows nothing about snooker, but has a great voice". Is loving a great voice a shallow admiration? Probably. But I do, because It's about much more than a voice.
