On this week’s show Carmen visits the island of Siargao in the Philippines, 2 years after the surfer’s paradise was devastated by Typhoon Odette to find out how it’s bouncing back. On her journey she visits one of the few places in the world that’s home to the stingless jellyfish.

2:50 "Little over a year." And yet, uploaded 7 days ago, exactly TWO years after Super Typhoon Odette / Super Typhoon Rai. When was this show broadcast? And why is Philippines the only country that gives a Second Name to every Typhoon? It's wild!
@genrerationx
@genrerationx 6 месяцев назад
Because most of the names are in Chinese where in fact, China is not getting hit. The names are also in alphabetical order so we know what number the typhoon is. Odette, for example, is the 15th typhoon of the year, hence it starts with the letter O.

The PH typhoon naming system is unique to us since we get so many typhoons. The first letter of the name signifies what order the typhoon enters the PH Area of Responsibility. The first typhoon’s name would begin with A, then B, and so on.

She's Australian. Can tell from the accent. But noticed she's generally not too adept at pronouncing non-English words and place names in general. Not all Australians would pronounce things the way she would. In standard UK English, it would be pronounced as "See-ar-gao" or "shar-gao" when spoken at speed: not too different from Philippine pronunciation.

The PH is a newly developing country not a full developing country. Lots of islands need rehabs. Tourists should not adventure in underdeveloped areas with negative comments. Even developed countries have bad areas. Remember it’s still partly underdeveloped country. Just stay in good cleaned beaches unless they want to adventure in places not ready for tourism.

calling it the next Bali is ridiculous. Unless they mean it will be over developed to accomodate vloggers who will flock to the island. Soon, it will have more vloggers than surfers. It is a very beautiful island. But it is not half the charm of Kuta, Sanur, Seminyak or Ubud. Bali is studded with glorious temples and iconic Balinese architecture and landscapes. This had a few things that are best Demolished. It is a nice island. But it needs to know what not to rebuild the next time Mother Nature decides to be a cleaning lady.

@user-wo2kr1gu1c
@user-wo2kr1gu1c 5 месяцев назад
Unfortunately it is truly a third world country or a less demeaning name, a developing country. Developed countries for your info have very good garbage collection system, water system functions well, no tricycles all over the place, traffic lights are everywhere. Most houses and buildings have aircon if it is summer and heater if winter time. No traffic in developed countries, roads and highways are clear because there are police officers that make sure traffic will not be caused by people. Sidewalks are well defined, paved and smooth for pedestrians in developed countries. The Philippines is truly beautiful when it comes to nature. I went to visit Moalboal and Oslob, Cebu, Philippines recently, those 2 places are incredible for me. More beautiful and memorable than Bali. Bali was developed so many years already and so the government and private sectors had planted flowers and beautiful trees to beautify Bali while Oslob and Moalboal are truly nature, however the Philippine local and national government had not developed both places for convenience of tourists. Garbage and litters were seen everywhere close to the tourist spots. The roads and side walks leading to the tourist spots were not paved well smoothly and definitively for tourist's convenience. The local government was only after collecting fees but were not beautifying the surrounding places close to the tourist spots, very disappointing. Tourists will not spend big money to go see trash so hoping the local government of Oslob and Moalboal will remember it. There are thousands of places on earth to see so the local government should improve those places all the time. It is the source of their income and their people.
