Bits and pieces from during and after a BBC News bulletin on BBC World, presented by Philip Hayton (plus business news with Patrick O'Connell and weather wih Peter Cockroft). Broadcast at 2300 GMT on 10 September 2001 - 0000 BST on 11 September. 13 hours later, the world would change forever...
...but anyway. Some interesting observations:
- After the 'coming up' segment halfway through the bulletin, there is an American business segment with Patrick O'Connell in New York. This seems to have been produced specifically for American audiences, as it wasn't signposted and it appeared where adverts would normally go.
- I've left in the weather forecast and breakfiller that followed the bulletin, purely for the amazing weather sting and that iconic breakfiller!

Brilliant capture. Phillip Hatton seemed subdued. The US insert not seen before. The break filler sequence simply 10/10. Odd that they trail Asia Business Report (except Europe and the Americas), but it is Hardtalk that is “Coming Next”.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. RE: Hayton seeming subdued... I didn't quite see that. Maybe he was just tired? It was midnight, after all! I'd never seen the US insert either. It's interesting because back then, only a few cable systems carried BBC World - it didn't become widely available there until 2006. Before then most Americans could only see it through bulletins broadcast on PBS and BBC America. My understanding is that trailers were played out centrally from London, with no differentiation between regions, which is why it would so often say 'except for viewers in [continents]'. And yes, that breakfiller is sublime. If they can dig up that World Today theme, surely the breakfiller music can come back too?

@@teeveestuff Viewers in the UK are now treated to World-esque break fillers on the News Channel now, with various re-used elements from BBC countdowns. It’s an improvement on what they had before, but I’d love them to re-use this sequence entirely! It’s rare that a whole package like that is so 100% right from day 1, and it still holds up 23 years later.

It's almost spooky watching this, isn't it? Knowing just what would unfold in the hours ahead...

This is all I have, I'm afraid. I may have some more BBC World stuff in the future, though, so do watch this space!
