They're overwhelmed and underwater. Storm-battered British Columbians are dealing with the aftermath of a third atmospheric river.
As the back to back storms hit amid a flooding disaster, the city of Abbotsford, B.C. set an all-time weather record this November. It recorded 540 millimetres total - about one-third of the city's average annual rainfall fell in November alone.
As Heather Yourex-West reports, relentless rain has made it impossible for residents to focus on recovery. Meanwhile, Robin Gill reports on how the province-wide repair bill is projected to balloon into the billions.

Can't log all the trees, take natural water systems away (draining Sumas Lake and its wetlands), pave over land so unnatural water flow is created, and expect things to be the same; man created much of the disaster unfolding.

Glad to see people in BC are safely staying in place. Is it just us Americans who get swept into flood waters while driving for a pack of cigs and a six-pack?

Good thing the provincial government has been collecting carbon taxes to cover the cost of extreme weather and climate emergencies, should be enough in that account to help with the repairs.

@juliemills9475
@juliemills9475 2 года назад
Time to move to higher elevations. Rebuild where floods will not occur. This low land is not sustainable with climate change. Been through this area many times traveling to Alaska. My heart breaks for all those going through this deviation. It will be more so if the people rebuild and then watch all their dreams and hard work crumble again. There has got to be a good solution. A thoughtful plan for the future.

Funny thing is,I've been paying ei,and taxes for 35 years at an average of 300-500 every two weeks,that totals 252,000- 420,000 just in taxes and ei.and I've never claimed ei. Along with what ever taxes I have paid for with all the things I've purchased in life. You times that by how every many people in Canada do the same PLUS MORE,the BC government can find the money. It's there,they just make excuses on not to give it out,but pay for expenses dinners,have charge accounts for office employees. How about you give all those farmer,and families all the money they have put into the system,all the taxes they have given BC government,Canada feds, give it back to them seeing they made you all rich,look at Trudeau house,tell him to sell it to help out

@NorthofThe49th
@NorthofThe49th 2 года назад
Definitely not the norm. November is usually the wettest month of the year for the coast, but this is insane. Abbotsford set an all-time monthly record with 541 millimeters of rain in November. The numbers are even higher closer to the coastal mountain range. It’s also been unseasonably warm with these weather events causing mountain snow to melt creating even more of an issue. A lot of the flooding in Abbotsford is because of the Nooksack river in Washington state jumping its banks and draining into the Sumas river which runs right through the Sumas Prairie area and eventually flows into the Fraser River in Chilliwack. Unfortunately, everything is compounding the problem. The Sumas Prairie used to be a lake and Mother Nature is doing her best to reclaim the land. Nature always wins in the end.

I love how nobody questions these new terms. Atmospheric rivers are created by geoengineers. This is weather warfare and we need to start holding people accountable.

I've seen military throw together pontoon bridges over rivers and ice-holes in very short order; but maybe that was the Russian military? The Canadian Federal and provincial govts might want to weigh the costs of losing vital infrastructure during a pandemic, during the Christmas shopping season, while much of the US (Canada's largest trading partner) is suffering shortages; against the investment of temporary structures and over/bypasses, to maintain vital shipping routes until permanent replacements can be constructed.
