At the top end of Stave Lake, where the upper Stave River flows in. You can paddle in carefully, there is immense cedar stumps perfectly preserved just under the surface of the water. A friend and I went there back in the late 80's intent apon canoeing, and hiking up the river valley. We were looking for a turn of the century logging camp that we had read about. We never did find it, but we did find lots of relics from that time. Like sections of still intact skid roads, slides to skid logs down to the river. And artifacts like bottles, and tools. The size of the cedar's they were logging was just amazing.

What a beautiful site and it looks quiet when you visited. We are now experiencing a heat wave here in Wales and it’s very busy as many are holidaying at home this year.👍😁😎🍺🍷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

It was nice, but suspect quite a bit busier had it been a weekend! Hoping your ‘heat wave’ not too extreme. We had the highest temperature ever set in Canada at 49.6 C during our last, in the community that had the resulting fire. Quite sad. Fortunately our weather seems to have returned to normal, however the forest fires are still a serious problem in the interior. Hoping we may see some rain at some point soon. Be safe and be well!

We just missed you again! We were at the Rock Creek rec site at Stave Lake. Interior camping with lot more shade but it was hot that weekend. Once again, I thought you would like it as we have. You forgot to mention that Kearsley is also an equestrian rec site.

Crossing paths! Our site was almost perfect as far as sun/shade...until about 4 pm that is and then almost full sun until 6. We actually did have a small part on the equestrian section of the site (nearer the start of the road), but removed it simply to shorten the video. Still a good spot for those with horses! Wishing you safe travels! 🚐

Again, quality content despite the fires, lingering covid effect and so on. We just finished the 2 nites Bamfield, 1 at Nitinat, 1 at Kissenger Lake and 2 at Nixon Creek (top end of Lake Cowichan) circle. Boy some of those were ruff roads. Total empty of the teardrop and wash and vac all of everything! Costs me well over $150 to get off the Island but still enjoying your trips, someday we will arrange a number into a proper road trip that justifies the ferry cost.

I went in 2024 May and water was so low you had to walk 15 meters out just to access the water. Not the waterfront I expected. It was quiet and nice, not too busy.

@@lingu5440 appreciate the update! We wonder if a matter of low rainfall or simply keeping the dam water level lower? Maybe both?

Beautiful scenery up there. I actually grew up close by and always remember the crazies up that way on weekends, which has kept me away as an adult. I hadn't heard of this campground so now seeing your video I'm eager to check it out.

We quite enjoyed it, though certainly weekend crowds could make it much busier. Campground gated however (gate closed between 10-7 if we recall correctly) and that likely helps ensure it remains quiet.

Another beautiful campsite. So sad about the fires, we are fighting some here in Washington state also. And as you say, it’s only mid July. The bird song was lovely - though maybe not at 5 am 😆

It was nice! We keep hoping for a few days of rain to assist in those areas, but nothing significant expected at this point. And yes, 5 am was a bit too early, but still enjoyed!

Thanks for another great video. We spent nearly every sunny day paddling around Stave Lake in our Advanced Frame kayak in 2020. It was great to see in your video how the packraft could handle the lake. Took our Ranger out to Lake Errock last week for our maiden voyage & noticed quite a difference in paddling packraft vs kayak. The Ranger is 1/3 the weight of the kayak, and with its different bow shape the wind at Lake Errock made paddling a bit of a challenge. After watching your video I'm thinking practice will be the key. Do you use a 240 cm paddle?
@hikenrv
@hikenrv 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed! Paddle recommended for the Explorer is 210, though a after years of use believe that slightly longer would be a better fit. Yes, paddling certainly different in a Packraft, though after years of use we just love it. It is slower than a kayak but the ability to go just about anywhere makes it wonderful. Last year we enjoyed it on relatively easy to get to places like Bowron Lakes (the day paddle ones) to Alpine (Wedgemount). With more use you will figure out what works best for you and your boat. Worst wind was at Nimpkish Lake on Vancouver Island...just a solo trip and had to add some rocks in the bow to help! Always laugh at how much worse the waves are and wind feels when paddling compared to the video! Nice to get out so often on Stave...would like to explore there more!

@@hikenrv - definitely looking forward to taking it on the road. The east side of Stave is really pretty. Lots of sandy beaches & driftwood. It was a relatively easy paddle in the Advanced Frame. I'm guessing it will be more work in the Ranger, but still do-able.

Well....spicy music! Nice! A question for you: Down in the U.S. it is legal to camp (tent, van, etc.) on federal forest and federal BLM land. It's known as 'dispersed camping'. There may or may not be a fire ring or other small amenity. The main advantage is that this offers large amounts of access with little or no expense. Pack-in/Pack-out is understood. Are there such opportunities in BC and Alberta, perhaps on provincial or federal lands? Or is it always about formal campsites and their finite limits. Nice to have you back!
@hikenrv
@hikenrv 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed! The short answer to your question (at least for BC) is that camping on crown land (effectively owned by the province ) is allowed for up to 14 days. Of course if a park or licensed to someone else that doesn’t apply. Excerpt below from a website we found adds a bit more detail. Expect that rules are similar across the country, though in some parts of Alberta some crown land may require a permit as we understand it. BC recreation sites fall under park land, but sites tend to be more primitive. Some are free, but many have a lower fee. Here is the commentary we found: our experience is limited, but access in more rural areas seems much more plentiful. Camping on Crown Land: Any person may camp on Crown land for up to 14 consecutive calendar days. For the purposes of calculating 14 consecutive days, a period of consecutive days is cumulative unless the person and their vehicle and equipment, as the case may be, are not present on the site for a period of at least 72 consecutive hours. So that covers Crown Land! But even if it's provincially owned land, camping will likely be restricted if the land is part of a nature reserve, provincial park or being used for some other type of use. Basically that doesn't leave much, and there won't be signs identifying it! The government will respond to inquiries about specific locations, but that certainly isn't helpful when you're actually on the trail and want to find a place to rest for the night. .

@@hikenrv Such a helpful, thoughtful reply! Thanks very much. I suppose the pressure on provincial campgrounds is much more intense within a very few hundred miles of the greater Vancouver area. The same seems true in southern Alberta, given the presence of USA traffic and Calgary. Some of us 'down here' are watching Premier Horgan's statements and PM Trudeau's whispered comments with hopes the border opens up sooner rather than later...but then, I'm sure you are watching it all closely as well. Thank you again.

In Ontario, Crown Land allows 21 days for camping. Plus, non-Canadians need to pay for a permit at about $7.00/day Cdn.
