Also, please make sure to watch the video thoroughly so that there are no misunderstandings.
This is not the first time I've experienced something like this in the Philippines. Living here as someone who looks 'foreign', I'm aware that these thing could happen easily. I know I should've known better to avoid it, but I believe many foreign tourists know way less than I do. I've been in at least 10+ beaches here in the Philippines, and I love them all in their own ways. I'm a beach girl literally, and I DO NOT WANT these things (way too over-priced products) to affect the impression of the place itself.
There are much more good things the Philippine beaches--such as Boracay-- has to show. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone again! 🥺

The overpricing actually against the law on philippine tourism. And I wish the local government of boracay should do something about these kind of schemes cause not only it affect its integrity for tourism but also it gives the bad impression to other foreigners who has plan to visit there. Fore sure you never been in boracay,every tourist destination are highly priced. Don’t expect cheap things there,and those Ate’s do overprice its okay lahh. I will be glad to give more to them,as we all know,how hard life in the island,and maybe they do really need money thats why. But for other side sana lng when Jessica confront them,she has courage to do more deeper. What i mean is to talk more,or report it to authority if get worse,etc. but at the end of the day you just want to enjoy your vacation,and vacationing need money. Pag wala ka pera,i tulog mu nlng haha peace. Just a thought.

@@relaxingparadisetv276 Dude, naririnig mo ba sinasabi mo? can you see the other merchant doing their work with honest price like 50 - 100, and these merchants are demanding for so high price like 1k to 3k? do you think it's ok? It's a scam, dude. Like for local tourist here in the philippines they work hard to earn that much of a money and sasabihin mo sakin "Pag wala ka pera, i tulog mo nalang"??? para bang sinabi mo narin na kapag alam ko ang tama manahimik nalang ako sa pandaraya? these merchant struggles the same way other do in that islan, like also here in tourist sites in manila. Philippine government actually against these kind of schemes kase reputation ng tourism ng pilipinas ang nakasalalay dyan. And isa pa, if you feel glad to give more like that kind of huge money to help them, well you're not actually helping them, you're literally encourage and spoiling them to do Scammy things. fighting and avoiding corruption starts with you first.

Boracay should have a policy that street shops should have their prices listed so that nobody will have a chance to get scammed. And Jessica is so right I would totally feel so betrayed when a fellow Filipino would do that to me, I guess we just gotta remind ourselves to ask the price first next time 😓

It's good that you actually included those clips Ms. Jessica cause it's an awareness to all, even us Filipinos that are living in countryside/provinces that want to go there. Scammers are everywhere, there's always good and bad even in our own country and also outside of the country, I mean all over the world.. That's why, it's really good that you take an action on it by uploading in a respectful way naman.. I bet those "ates" where silently embarrassed on their own. It's a lesson learn also for them. My point was just to say facts that everywhere there is bad, not just in Philippines.. but all over the world. Sadly because of poverty people will always take advantage. It happens in other countries. Japan is the only country so far that I haven’t seen this kind of scam. However, I’m sure it happens.

Whaaatttttt!!!! Tindi, Boracay administrators must give orientation on the vendors and business owners... El Nido is way better than Boracay, get all island tour packages available.. it's amazing.. we did that and we stayed for a week. That's the place that I can confidently recommend to my foreign friends.

It's actually good that you included the part about the scammers - as you said - so that other people will be aware. They scam not just foreign-looking tourist but sometimes even locals - heck even the boating activities you did - what happened to my family was that we declined on our first day - the next day the guy was there and asked us - I think for a couple of days he did that - the price went down to less than half :) The best "style" is to actually do what you did - ask around for the prices of almost everything that has variable prices (braid, massage, heck even salbabidas from shops have huge price jumps) to get an idea.

It is OK to share that video and you were all too composed about it. If I were you, given that I forgot to ask beforehand, I will not leave without them giving my money back because it super overpriced. Prices are same for local and foreign tourists and they should not have charged too much. I am just happy you still enjoyed your stay even after all that chaos. I just hoped we went there on the same dates so I had the chance to meet you!!! And same, our next trip with friends is El Nido/Coron but for summer next year. Hope to see you one time tho. I really admire Jessica for her Love to our & her country Philippines, especially to the Filipino people. Coz she knows what really is the Philippines & its good People in general. Theres really a few people taking advantage or make scams, maybe coz of poverty or greediness. But they must not do it to anybody, Filipino or Foreigner. Its not a reason to do it. She really brings the message that it is NO BENEFIT to our country & our good people. Government officials should act on this & have a policy on workers. They must be penalized or give a stern warning to avoid this shameful & evil acts.

even heard from people i know that in some provinces, if they find out you’re from manila and you don’t speak their dialect, they will charge you for a higher price. thats kinda sad cause you’re a tourist even in your own country. but also, i hope the government can offer programs to help people in the tourism industry since they play a big part in the overall experience

Hi Jessica. I am one of your fan. We’re very sorry for that incident. Be always very careful. Before you buy or make any activity always ask for the price first. There’s still some dishonest people. You can always make tawad when they gave you the price or much better go ask as many as you can first before you make a purchase or take the service. Woahh the way how you handled the sitiation is genius. You even explained the reason why you showed the video about the overpricing of your braids. You really care about your viewers and for others (especially tourists) not to think bad about the situation and the place. Afterall boracay is a wonderful place.

It’s sad that that happened to your group, Jessica. Last time I was in Boracay they were trying to scam me on the price too. I look so Filipino and I speak fluent Tagalog pa but that didn’t stop them from trying to overcharge me.

Scamming here in the Philippines is not really new. Even pure Filipinos like us is prone to scam by these greedy Filipino vendors. That's why it's a good idea to ask at least 2-3 stores to get the idea of the actual price of the item. You should fight back with them if they insisted like a bit*h. If they saw you like a weak customer prone to scam, they'll do it to you over and over.

El nido is way more cheaper compared to boracay, also I think it’s more relaxing there. So for me, el nido is way way more beautiful and Peaceful than bora. Looking forward for this vlog. Ps. Hindi talaga mawawala ang mga scammers pero sana mabantayan ang mga ganito sa mga tourists spot. Not only for the foreigners but also sa kapwa pinoy natin na nag-iipon para lang makapagbakasyon at maka-experience ng ganito after a long work. Im sorry you have to experience that. I hope you'll comeback again in Bora in a nice weather. *Tip: Ask first the price before saying yes. Go to atleast 3 or 4 stores and compare the price. Para malaman ang actual price range*

Edit: Also, also, perfect example of it doesn't matter WHO you are whether you're from the same country,same race, or familiar with the area, etc. if you're not a LOCAL as in local in THAT area, you're not going to be fully aware so be careful!! Yup, this is a perfect example of being aware regardless of where you visit. There are people who take advantage without any thought or consideration. It's truly not personal because those type of people don't THINK about how their theft affects the person/people they've stolen from except for their own selfish gain. What I'm trying to say is, don't take this type of experience personally. It's really not personal. Lesson is just be aware and proactive as much as possible.

It was nice that you included that video for awareness not only for foreigners but also for locals. I can say that not only in Boracay but also in other parts of the Philippines or in other country some people do that way just to earn bigger income but the truth is, it wasn’t good to fool someone for living. Wherever you are as long as there’s a someone like that, they will trick you whenever they want, even tricycle drivers, karenderia and more do that too just for living. I do understand there needs but this is not right. Hope this is a lesson to some vendors out there who takes advantage to those who can afford (example those foreigners) and those people who look like rich (in reality their not😅😂)

Sana din no may police na nag lakad lakad doon para madaling makapag reklamo pag may ganyang incident at matakot din mga scammer kasi kita nila na may police. Hindi yong sa presinto lang sila tumatambay dapat may gumagala gala din para bantayan mga tao. Ganito dito sa h.k kaya daling makapag reklamo or dahil makapunta ang police if may nangyayaring gulo

No one will doubt you're a local even if you have an accent if you speak in Tagalog, but probably because since you only asked after, even for Filipinos who were born in the PH who'll ask about the price after, they'll probably get scammed, since at that point you won't be able to say no, unless someone comes to intervene.

Some foreign and other Filipinos who live outside Boracay experienced this overpricing system of some locals. We all know it's hard to earn money and lots of competitors but still don't do this thing. This is an embarrassment to our country. Foreign people love our country especially they love visiting Boracay Beach and having fun there and experiencing some filipino things that they don't have in their country. My fellow Filipinos, please don't embarrass our country.

This could have been reported to the LGU but that will definitely ruin your day, waste your time, ruin their livelyhood but in the long run would help improve the standards for business. A bit of advice from a Pinoy domestic traveller: make sure you know the price, or total price before buying. In your case, before you let the seller do the tattooing/braiding, make sure you know the actual, moreover, total price. Be inquisitive. When while they do the work and kept on suggesting additional work, ask if it is part of the orig/initially given price. If not, ask specifically how much for the extent or additional scope of work before allowing them to proceed. Some parlors offer me for additional work while the orig agreement have already started, so specifically ask them if there was any extra charge. If none, I accept the offer. If there is additional charge to it, I think about it or haggle.

Mahirap i-control ang price lalo na service yung pinaprovide nila pero sana magkaroon ng guidelines like dapat may price list sila that they can show sa mga customer and tama na dapat magtanong muna tayo bago naten kunin yung service nila.
