Blade (1998) and Blade 2 (2002) were HUGE influences for me and I'd highly suggest them. I'd also say New Jack City (1991) and Jungle Fever (1991) are great (but are more straight dramas).
Simon wasn't officially released from the cryo prison. The politician released him solely to kill Edgar friendly. He still had a similar amount of time left on his sentence.
But why had he an officially sheduled parole hearing years before Spartan? Even if he had failed find hostages is negligence so not same as kidnapping etc Simon had done
Yay, so glad you watched and enjoyed this one! Probably my favorite Stallone film outside of the Rocky franchise! Films with a similar tone that you might dig: Virtuosity (1995), Species (1995), & possibly Splice (2009).
Virtuosity is a pretty good film, species is good enough to watch once, splice was good up the end and then it took a supersonic nose dive into the shitter.....in my humble opinion.....
It's funny how someone your age sees so many differences between the future proposed in the movie and our real time and someone my age sees how much reality has towards that future from the time the movie came out, we didn't take the warning seriously enough, we just laughed it off. I always say that while sci-fi writers invent stories as warnings, powers that be unfortunately see inspiration in them.
Doesn't matter. Spartan was the one that was responsible for the deaths as far as they knew anyways. Phoenix might have kidnapped them, but all evidence was that Spartan ignored their safety and caused it.
Cocteau moved him up in line for "parole". Along with all the subliminal training he also gave him the passphrase to get out of the cuffs. It was an overkill reaction to kill Edgar Friendly. Which is also why he went along with Phoenix to get more prisoners released.
To watch "Rocky", you have to erase your expectations. It'll not be what everyone thinks it is, before watchin' it ;) And after Rocky(s) - "First Blood" (Rambo).
I love your reactions Verowak and I am so happy that you decided to react to demolition man. It is one of my all-time favorite movies ever. and also keep up the good work. ❤❤❤
2:40 - Actor Steve Kahan plays the "Yelling at the reckless protagonist" police captain in this movie as he also did in the Lethal Weapon franchise (which you see a poster in Sandra Bullock's office at 6:15).
This movie is so goofy and over the top, really showed Stallone's comedic chops. The only accurate prediction was what happens with all utopian societies or "paradises." That they are built on blood, death, and an oppressed underclass I remember this when it came out in theaters back whenI was a kid and Taco Bell was doing commercials for this movie. It was the first time, and only time, a fast food franchise did marketing for an R-Rated action movie. The 90's man, it was so weird even back then because most marketing from a fast food chain was for PG, PG-13 or G rated movies if there was a movie tie in. The only other tie in I remember seeing that came close was when McDonald's had a happy meal based on Batman Returns which when people actually saw it in the theater were like "probably too violent and weird to advertise to kid's". I enjoyed the movie but I was used to violent movie at that age already, Lol
I had this movie on vhs back in the 90s but i lived in Hong Kong, where Taco Bell wasnt known. There was a dialogue overwrite to say Pizza Hut instead and the food was altered to look more like large capsules emulating pizza
ah damn you edited out ny favorite joke in the whole movie. They are watching tapes of Stallone and in one of them he is carrying a little girl and a reporter is following him asking "Mr. Spartan...do you think it was ok to blow up a building costing over half a million dollars when this little girl's ransom was only 20,000?" Then the girl immedietly says "fuck you lady" and Stallone nods approvingly. Hahaha so funny and such a small moment in this awesome movie fulls of great moments.
@@allenruss2976 Lol that ones great too. This movie is just filled with tons of funny moments. I also like Taco Bell and the franchise wars, Singing Oscar Myer Weiner, and just generally how everyone talks. "What's your Boggle?" haha
@@VerowakReacts Lol no worries. Its probably the swear. "Oh noos he said fuck in an R rated movie.....stop the whole video" lol. I understand completely I was just looking forward to see what your reaction to that would be is all. No biggee.
The three seashells is an old timer joke. When I was visiting a retirement home it was explained A man came into the Dr office one day The Dr asked why he was there. The man replied he accidentally went to the women restroom and used one of the stalls and there he saw three buttons. The Dr asked what did the buttons do. The man said the first button flushed the toilet and the 2nd shot water between his crack. Then the Dr asked, “ well what did the third button do?” The man replied,”Well Doc that’s why I’m here.”
"This is such a strange new world..." Oh, you are so, so close! Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," about a perfect controlled utopian society. Name reflections--Lenina Crowne/Lenina Huxley, John the Savage/John Spartan...along with sly textual references in the dialogue. A classic of philosophic pre-war intellectual fiction, sadly no longer on anyone's required reading list.
man, Sandra Bullock was so sexy in this one. I love the summing up you do at the end of movies with the imdb stuff. Blade is definitely one you should do...not so sure about the second and third ones.
The 3 seashells is not complicated and they're not disgusting. They're just the controls for the bidet. One for hot water, maybe even soapy hot water, one for rinse water and one for the air dryer. I've seen similar setups in hotels. The joke was that spartan was a remnant of a world that wasn't familiar with simplicity and ease of use. The other explanations defy logic or just make no sense.
36:01: a well placed one-liner pun is so appropriate in an action or thriller, imo. It’s that lil bit of self-awareness and levity by the writers/director, which makes the film more entertaining for me, at least for some super-serious moments.
I strongly suggest that you watch the "Rocky" series of movies starring Sylvester Stallone. They are equal parts heartwarming love story and underdog sports movie - very entertaining!
Mmh... favourite Stallone movie? I did not see many with him but from the movies I saw next to Demolition Man I also liked Judge Dredd (even when some fans of the comics would disagree). Daylight is another movie I liked. Even when I never saw them, the Rocky and Rambo franchise is also well loved by fans.
I just watched Abigail and I enjoyed it very much. It's billed as a horror movie but it didn't scare me at all, I think you would enjoy it. If you haven't watched Megan yet, it falls into the same sort of thriller/horror lite genre.
Huxley is too young to be Spartan's daughter. Even if miss Spartan were newborn when John went in, she would be 36, while Sandy B was 29 at the time. For another movie with Denis Leary and Sandra - Two If By Sea, a romcom
If you want to judge Sylvester Stallone, do it by watching Rocky. The first one. It is a very touching and heartwarming movie, about a boxer who gets a chance of a lifetime. The champ is going to meet this low level fighter, in a charity match. Not really a real match, it is just for publicity and charity. But the low level boxer, Rocky, The Italian Stallion, thinks he actually might have a chance. And everyone makes fun of him for thinking so.
Not to go off topic but your name on here Verowak.. There is only one time I ever heard of that name. It was Nick Nolte 's dog in the Movie ", Down and out in Beverly Hills" anyhow Great reaction..!
Honestly, one of my favourite movies. So much fun, and full of great bits of world building (swear machines, three seashells, franchise wars.) It's a fairly unique take on a future dystopia too, which makes it stand out in my mind. My only gripe is the "pizza hut" dub in the international release. The movie gives enough context to understand the joke, even if you've never heard of Taco Bell (Stallone's reaction, Bullock's explanation in the car.) Totally unnecessary, and kind of insulting.
NICE! Shawshank reference, awesome!! LETHAL WEAPON ⁉️⁉️ Indeed! You will absolutely love all four!! Great Reaction! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎 Had to add, I saw this when it came out and the term VR or Virtual Reality wasn't quite known yet.
Lots of people misjudge Stallone because his "action meat-head" reputation precedes him but he's actually far more a film maker than "just" an actor, having written and directed multiple movies. Basically, i'd say if you want to really "get" Stallone, watch "Rocky".
For a 1993 movie they were pretty spot on with the futuristic things. Self driving cars, FaceTime, And Arnold Schwarzenegger did dip into politics, he was the governor of California at one point.
Fun fact, planet Hollywood had an exact model of naked Stallone in ice on display there and it’s weird to eat and see his taint. Also Stallone explained the 3 seashells and it’s supposed to be a Rome thing with how they shared a sponge stick, not sanitary 2 seashells grabs the crap from your ass and the third scrapes it clean from your ass.
@@VerowakReactsbidets became a thing in America (as they had been for decades in Japan and centuries in Europe) during the Plandemic when toilet paper became dogecoin.
Best part is at 35:25 when she kicks that guy in the balls and then when she kicks him in the face lol she’s super fierce plus I love those boots she’s wearing. Makes her look even more dominant 💪
Favorite Stallone movie = Rocky. Whole Rocky series is great (except Rocky 5), hard to pick a favorite from them but the first is such a tone setter. Favorite Stallone scene = First Blood. You know the one. Never see it coming, and that makes it so powerful. Favorite Stallone quote = "You're a disease. I'm the cure." Cheers to you if you discover which movie that's from without using the interwebz. Favorite Stallone over-the-top movie = Judge Dredd. The over-commitment to the role is so cheesy it's funny. That and Demolition Man are the closest Stallone ever comes to doing comedy. Stop or My Mom Will Shoot was supposed to be a comedy but it sucks too much to make me laugh. Favorite Stallone blowing shit up movie = tie between Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and any of The Expendables.
A bunch of things make no sense. The old timey car that works. The franchise wars (ignoring that parent corps already own multiple fast food franchises and don't merge them).
Simon Phoenix really lost his head when facing John Spartan. lol 38:22 It affected Simon so much that he just went to pieces over the whole encounter. lol Sorry, bad puns. I just couldn't help it. I'll shut up now lol
Thank you. "Demolition Man" is my favourite Movie staring Mr. Stallone, however I think he is at his best as an actor in the movie "Cop Land" (1997). If you have not seen any other Wesley Snipes movies "Blade" (1998) and the sequels are definitely worth a look as is "New Jack City" (1991) in which he first came to prominence.
Not long before this movie, Stallone *tried* to do a couple of comedies, but they weren't exactly good movies. I enjoyed 'Oscar' even if it isn't really highly rated, but 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot' is just awful. He's mostly stuck to action/suspense/sci-fi/drama flicks since then.
I always get a chuckle when I walk into someone's bathroom and they've decorated it with three seashells somewhere near the toilet. It's one of the best inside jokes ever.
This was from an interview with Stallone: "OK, this may be bordering on the grotesque, but the way it was explained to me by the writer is you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third. You asked for it…. Be careful what you ask for, sorry."
Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC are owned by the same company. When this movie came out I was working for PepsiCo Inc who owned all 3 restaurants, Pepsi Cola and Frito Lay.
@@adrianpeart Yeah, pretty sure we got the Taco Bell version in the UK. I'd guess both because, as an English speaking country, it was assumed that we'd have heard of Taco Bell from US media (which indeed I and everyone I saw it with had) _and_ because we did actually have a couple of branches by then (albeit only in London AFAIK).
I live in Denmark, we didn't have either of the two at the time and still don't where I live (don't know about Copenhagen) and the version I saw as a teen said Taco Bell. Also, I didn't know about Taco Bell or Pizza Hut when I watched it, but the name "Taco Bell" told me it's a taco place and John Spartan's reaction to the leader of the strange future inviting him there told me, that John knew it as being a sort of fastfood joint or at least not anything high class. It's not that everyone is a moron, it's just that movie makers operate on the assumption that we are.
Fun fact: due to a) alcohol being illegal, b) caffeine being illegal, and c) this being Taco Bell, the fancy guests are saluting John Spartan with caffeine-free Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
Stallone and Schwarzenegger are very good friends in real life, and they loved to make fun of each other in some of their movies. You should watch Schwarzenegger's "Last Action Hero" where there are easter eggs in it about Stallone. Schwarzenegger is also in Stallone's "Expendables" series as well.
@@VerowakReactsIf you caught the one like John Spartan being shocked at Arnold Schwarzenegger being President in the future you'll likely get the ones in Last Action Hero. Stallone and Arnold were action movie rivals, some say friendly some say serious. They winded up being friends.
(14:24) Mmmmmm, Sandra Bullock and those tight pants. Back then, the guys thought, There's no way girls/women will wear anything that tight (without a shirt-tail covering their butt) in the future. (No way....)
@@VerowakReacts I would like to contribute some suggestions: for Stallone: definitely the first Rambo film (technically called First Blood), in my opinion, the sequels go down hill and then MORE down the hill. Cliffhanger, The Specialist, Daylight, Assassins. for Snipes: Passenger 57, US Marshalls (if you haven't watched The Fugitive with Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford, I would STRONGLY recommend THAT film), New Jack City, Drop Zone, Rising Sun, The Art of War one thing I would like to point out is that Dahmer was killed in prison just one year after this film hit theaters, and thus would not have been available to phoenix.
Both Rambo and Rocky will surprise you if you only think of Stallone as an action star. He's actually quite an impressive actor, but he was type cast almost immediately as an "action star" so that's what people are most familiar with him for. If you want to see him in something more dramatic, check out Cop Land (1997). It's a good film in general, but you'll also get to see Stallone's acting ability.
Despite many of his roles being similar and of a certain style, Stallone is no slouch in acting or writing. His performance in First Blood (1982) is quite moving. And, he wrote all six Rocky films, directing four of them.
He's no Daniel Day Lewis but he gets by OK in a few movies. I don't think First Blood is one of them despite his last scene. Copland is much better work.
14:05 - 😂 yes, this movie made a point of not going for subtlety. John "Spartan", "Phoenix has risen from the ashes", "Lenina Huxley". It chose to be as on the nose as possible, and I find it glorious.
This movie is loosely based on the 1932 novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley about a dystopia that is nice, too nice. conditioned niceness. Book was ahead of its time. This was a breakout role for Sandra Bullock. Great reaction as always. Thanks. Be well.
The most horrifying part of the society they've created in this movie is not only is every day tacoshit tuesday, theres also nothing but three seashells to deal with it
The best bit is actually skipped in this reaction for YT. It's the part when they are looking at footage before they unfreeze Spartan. When the reporter on the scene asks if all the damage done was worth the person saved and the little girl says "F@€k you lady!" and Spartan agrees with her 😂😂😂
Stallone movies: First Blood & Rocky 1 & 2 for starters. Then Copland & Cliffhanger. Escape Plan & Creed. Oscar & Tango and Cash. There's so many great ones out there. You'll fall in love with Rocky.
We know Huxley is not Spartan's daughter, because he finds his real daughter in a deleted scene. She's one of the "scraps" and still visible in the movie.
Saw this back when it came out. At the time it was just another standard goofy 90's action movie, but as time has gone on, I've come to see it for what it really is. Demolition Man was really a highly accurate political and cultural predictive forecast of the US.
Denis Leary also did the voice of Diego in the Ice Age movies. And as far as Wesley Snipes being a badass in Martial arts. 😂 he wanted to spar with an MMA fighter so he could prepare for an upcoming movie he was gonna do. Joe Rogan told him he would spar with him, and Snipes chickened out.
In point of fact, Snipes didn't "chicken out". He was under investigation for federal tax evasion at the time and literally didn't have time for it. Wesley's trained in more disciplines of martial arts then Joe has hairs left on his 'roided up head. It wouldn't have been close. At all.
In the European release Taco Bell was dubbed over to be Pizza Hut because most people in Europe didn't know Taco Bell at the time. It's funny that you can still clearly see the Taco Bell logos.
I've seen this piece of trivia before, and the alternative dub on youtube, but I have seen the movie multiple times on TV and I've owned the movie on VHS and DVD, and I assure you that it was always Taco Bell. I don't know where "the European release" was actually released, but it wasn't here.
Wesley Snipes trivia is almost as entertaining as his role in movies. That one bit about one of the Blade movies where he just outright refused to open his eyes during one of the scenes so the producers has to waste money on CGI to put fake eyes on his face just cracks me up 🤣
I thought they were found in bathrooms as decor and people just assumed they used it as part of actually using the bathroom 😂😂😂😂. But I like yours better. Makes more sense.
This is my favorite Stallone movie so you picked a great one to start with. Excellent choice. I never thought a combination of Stallone, Snipes and Bullock would work but it’s actually perfection, a trifecta!
The song came from Leary's stand-up album, No Cure For Cancer. Until this movie he was known more as an angry comic (the "Oscar Meyer Weiner" bit could have part of his routine) but he later moved into serious acting, such as Rescue Me.
