We left our humble abode in Mackay where we weathered the storm with Mel and Julie... Thanks again guys!
We found ourselves in Bowen where we spent an awesome few days exploring all the bays and beaches... how beautiful! We met a local couple who invited us to check out their hibiscus farm, and even allowed us to stay on the property for the night!
With a couple of opportunities to get out to the Whitesunday Islands we drove back to Airlie. After a couple days of waiting around, nothing unfortunately came from it so we headed north once again, stopping in at Hydeaway Bay... a spot worth checking out!
Before we got to Townsville, a mate Mark told us about this small seaside town of Wunjunga where he his family own a beach shack on the beach... like literally in the beach. We tool the beaten path all the way out, then realised it was about a 500m drive along the beach to get to the shack. Kye got out and ran right up the beach to check the sand hardness, where we decided we'd give it a go! We managed to make it all the way up, even onto the soft sand, away from the huge high tide line. We nervously awaited up until 10:30pm for the king high tide (was a full moon), just to make sure we were high enough. Pheww no problems... expect for the crazy mosquitos and sand flys! We spent the day hanging out, fishing, crabbing and taking it all in. We met a local guy who gave us some of his mud crabs (because we got none) and a heap of fresh fruit and veggies from his farm... what a bloody legend!
Despite Wunjunga being one of the most scenic spots we've been, we couldn't do another night of the sand flys, so we cooked dinner whilst waiting for the tide to drop and drove on out. We will be back, a little more prepared :)
We both couldn't stop talking about how amazing the locals are up here. If you give them the time of day and are up for a chat, they'll do almost anything to help. We a truly so grateful for these experiences.
