Commando Heads have distinct advantages for beach fishers: they allow for easy distance with minimal false casting, they can be cast in multiple different ways, they allow for fishing up against trees and steep banks at high tide, and they allow for effective casts on lighter than normal rods. Ben Paull has been fishing Puget Sound with Commando Heads a lot this season and having a great time. Less false casting during the day equals more time with the fly in the water, as well as less fatigue on long days of repetitive casting. Check out this video as Ben lays out the case for Commandos and catches some fish while he's at it. To purchase Commando Heads visit:

Nice tackle combination, well adapted to the spot and weather conditions. Of course, if you want to make it easier and even more productive, nothing like an ultralight to light long spinning rod 😉 Real fun too. I m not sure if it would be less affected by the wind though…🤔

Are you fishing the floating OPST tip?

No he isn’t. 5’ sinking tip.

Are you using a euro nymph rod?

Yes, he is. But not a highly specialized one. Any 10’ 3wt would do. The 10’ give him lots of reserve power in the bottom part of the blank to fight a big fish , the 3wt power allows him to use a fairly light Commando head (175 grains) + 5’ OPST sinking tip as he is casting small streamer flies in rather shallow, almost still water. Also, he is wading. So a longer rod helps.

what rods do you recommend? 3wt or 4 wt
@davidbanks2730
@davidbanks2730 Год назад
Depends on the size of your flies, mainly. He s using a 3wt with tiny streamers (175 grain head). For bigger fish you should go for a 5wt and heavier head (see their charts), same for much bigger streamers.

I don’t think he does, as far as Spey/skagit/Scandi goes. He is very proficient.

@@davidbanks2730 I agree with that. I was pretty amazed at how easily he shoots line with minimal rod movement.
