Trail so steep you need a rope to climb up and down it, long distance hiking along the beach, climbing one of the highest peaks in Quebec Mont Jacques Cartier, and my first ever 40 mile day. The international appalachian trail just keeps getting better!
Also known as the Sentier International Des Appalaches, the International Appalachian Trail was my first thru hike back in 2016. It was the beginning of something much longer as I would continue beyond this trail to hike 5,000 miles all the way down to Key West Florida on the Eastern Continental Trail. A single continuous hike that included the IAT, Appalachian Trail, Benton Mackaye Trail, Pinhoti Trail, Coosa Trail, Alabama Hiking Trail, Florida Trail, and Overseas Heritage Trail all in one! It was great to say the least.
With this series we are throwing it back to 2016 and the beginning of that long hike to take a look at this lesser known trail. Most of this footage has never been used, and I had long considered it lost! The trail is rugged and not well traveled requiring some bushwhacking and navigational skills. The trail follows the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of St Lawrence for many miles before it hikes way back up to elevation. The trail takes you to the top of one of Quebec's highest and most prominent peaks, Mont Jacques Cartier. You are always in moose country, and I even saw some wild seals while walking the coast! The hardest part of all for me personally was the french, as Quebec is a prominently french speaking province and many of these places the trail takes you are very small rural areas where most won't know any english. It's definitely a thru hike worth looking closer at!
I started this hike with a 6lb nearly super ultralight baseweight, and quickly widdled that down as I went to a 5lb baseweight. I was extremely ultralight and my intentions were mostly to be fastpacking or speed hiking this trail. My pack was small, I only used a poncho tarp as my shelter, I had a 40 degree quilt, and not much else! Not even a cookset. I was all about getting big miles, and doing as much as I could ever day. A lightweight pack helped me achieve that while not getting injured.

So if you've ever been curious what is north of Mt Katahdin, or if you never knew there was an International Appalachian Trail, I hope you are enjoying this series!
