@@Tommygunz838 Tommyz, I'm a filmmaker and I have already done one wild video for Beach House's PPP. I'm currently putting together an idea for this song, Somewhere Tonight. It's , me in Chicano baby-form (computer animation) slowing driving by in a Low Rider, and this becomes interspersed with the mafia expresso-coffee scene from David Lynch's "Mulholand Drive." So it's sort of a video about how all of the chaos and tensions of the world still do not affect my calm and peace as I cruise by in all in my shiny Low Rider. I also see the key of G (this song) as flow and the key of fluidity. Aquamarine. Therefore I'm "cruising." If you have a sec, I'd love to hear your reaction to my PPP video. It's here at _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole,_ and the title is: Piss-Poor Planning. Beach House's PPP. A film by Frank Montoya.
Thank Your Lucky Stars 1. Majorette (0:00) 2. She's So Lovely (4:01) 3. All Your Yeahs (8:22) 4. One Thing (12:11) 5. Common Girl (17:47) 6. The Traveller (20:55) 7. Elegy to the Void (25:10) 8. Rough Song (31:29) 9. Somewhere Tonight (36:46)
Sub Pop I'll never be able to describe what this album means to me, let alone what it makes me feel. Beach House will forever imprint itself in my life. I hope Victoria and Alex understand that many of us felt this way. Thanks guys.
this entire album feels like a haunting reprise of all their previous works. dreamier, darker, spacier and yet oh so familiar... they truly outdid themselves on this one. i can feel TYLS slowly becoming my favorite album.
+Cherie Ko I feel this is Beach House's best album. Darkest and dreamiest, returns to their earlier sound meshed with cinematic cyclical nature of Bloom.
Legit, the first few songs instantly send me back to their earliest albums like Devotion back in 2008, the melodies sound familiar too, in a nostalgic way
@@stpaulimdogThank Your Lucky Stars is actually an entirely separate project from Depression Cherry, not B-sides, even though they were recorded at the same time
Somewhere Tonight always makes my brain slowdance through all of the memories I have with my husband: the good, the bad, the funny and the sad. It's completely magical and only Beach House can do this for me. Thank you.
Just, wow. Depression Cherry was alright, but the release of this album was like an unexpected right-hook. Totally blown away. So beautiful, thank you.
+A- Hole I see what you guys mean about Depression Cherry being "alright." The first 2 listens I only liked a couple songs or so. I then listened to the rest of Beach House's discography again, then came back to Depression Cherry a few weeks later. It's really grown on me now and I'm starting to absolutely love it. Hopefully if you give it a go some time down the road you'll like it a lot more ^ ^
+evan heimermann Depression Cherry, immediately hit me.... something about it being new but familiar really hit it off for me..... It evoked strong nostalgic feelings even when never having had heard it before, like I had heard it a hundred times before. Beautiful record all around.
Quotable Quotes, & Connectible Dots: -"I think the main thing that Victoria is super-psyched about shaking is the Mazzy Star thing." (-Alex Scally, 2010) -"Fields of light / They hold me inside / Count MY STARS / They are LUCKY in the sky" (-Mazzy Star, "Happy," 1996) -"I like Beach House a lot" (-Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, 2013)
"Somewhere Tonight" is so magical. I don't know any other band which has so many wonderful songs. It is amazing how good they are. Thank you for the upload and a chance to listen to such a great piece of music.
I first became a fan with Teen Dream, Bloom blew my mind, and Depression Cherry broke my heart. Thank Your Lucky Stars returns full circle to the hazy childhood memories from their debut but with the more cinematic atmospheres and textures found in Bloom. The album seems to be a story of lost innocence. The more I listen to Thank Your Lucky Stars, the more I realize this is my favorite #BeachHouse yet. It's simultaneously their darkest and dreamiest album. "The Traveller" is road music for wandering souls, “Elegy to the Void” & "Rough Song" both belong in an oneiric film, and “Somewhere Tonight” is the most perfect song #BeachHouse has ever written.
Thank Your Lucky Stars has become one of my favorite albums recently. Personally, it feels like Beach House coming full circle in their discography/stuff they've explored up to this point. I find elements of all their previous albums in TYLS, as well as new tricks thrown in. Not too sure if anyone has talked about this, but I adore what seems to be the story in the album of a girl going from childhood to old age. Contrary to what many believe, I do think that every song on this album is essential. They all fall perfectly in their place, and both the opening and closing tracks truly feel like a beginning and an end. I won't lie, at the time that both Depression Cherry and TYLS were released I firmly believed DC was the superior album, but as the title suggests, it's more of an emotional piece to accompany you during brooding times. Man oh man did TYLS grow on me. It's such an interesting album sonically as well, it sounds rather full despite the "skeletal" structure. Rough Song is one of the most tender songs I've heard and Elegy to the Void is just insane. The lyrics in Common Girl get me every time. As mentioned earlier, this album feels like Beach House in a return to form, while remaining new and fresh. For a brief moment, it seems like the story of our enigmatic heroine omnipresent in all of Beach House's music has come to an end; yet all the same it seems like we've barely scratched the surface of all her mysteries.
Beach House is so tricky. They promoted a lot Depression Cherry before months of the release date, then out of nothing they came out with an another full length studio album. :) Thank Your Lucky Stars is a huge surprise and I can't say enough thank you to them for this.
@@Brendan-Black Not exactly... they've stated these selection of songs were meant for their own album, even if written and recorded in the same sessions as Depression Cherry. And IMO, it's more than decent!
First, thank you Sub Pop (you amazing people you...waving to Bekah) for uploading the stream so I can share it. Second, thank you Beach House for existing. I found you ten years ago and I can't live without you now. Best night of my life was seeing you live on August 24th. There isn't a word in existence that describes the emotion that Thank Your Lucky Stars makes me feel. Such a powerful, eloquent album. My sd card overfloweth with your music, and I couldn't be happier about it. This is definitely the year of Beach House. Much love to you Victoria and Alex. XXX
You mean Bekah Fly, the poet from NYC? This is crazy! // You won't believe this but she's visited me here in New Mexico and I just used one of her drawings of a ghostly Native American for my current short film. It about a half hour long, but if you don't have time to watch it, just check out the intro where I use her painting! I'm here at _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole,_ and the name of the film is: Buffy Sainte-Marie: The Lie That Was Never Told
they can't do anything wrong. their sound is so good. they don't even have to do anything different they can just make an album and it'll be great. you know it's a good band when they stick to a formula and it's still enjoyable.
The only album I didn't really like so far was 7, and it thoroughly shocked me. I felt like it was my fault and I was just wrong or something 😅 But on these other albums, even the songs I'm not huge into are still objectively interesting and unique
The live version they're playing of the song "Elegy" in 2016 is mesmerizing. They did it at Coachella weekend 1, April 16. Highlight of the show, for me. I caught it via the yt livestream. They add a whole long, rousing instrumental section at the end that's mind blowing that transforms the song from the studio version. It's got three guitars going simultaneously, reminding me a little of Sonic Youth but with somewhat less "noisy" guitar styles than SY. Beach House as a 4-piece band works so well. That whole Coachella BH set is so good. Sadly, the Coachella organization is draconian about people upping Coachella sets to yt, etc. They block them or have them taken down. But fortunately, there's still a torrent version of the video findable online if you're a "pirate" at heart.
I'm so glad I stumbled upon the other videos in Sub Pop. Thank you guys so much! And thank you Beach House. You guys have no idea how much you have helped me overcome events and people in my life. Thank you.
You guys are awesome uploading these. I bought the album of course (even pre-ordered!) but it's really convenient having it on RU-vid as well. Also I think it's cool that you're so willing to share it.
Not best I've ever listened to, but this is definitely their best album, followed closely by Bloom. The rest of their discography is very meh to me. Two great, timeless albums for sure.
Just lovely! More immediately accessible than Depression Cherry (which I adore…it hugely rewards repeated listens) but I wouldn't want to rank them. Each is its own delightful thing. Thanks for this surprise!
SO SO SO SO much love for this band. Truly. Victoria and Alex are so incredibly talented and they never fail to disappoint. Saw them 2 weeks ago and Victoria had a heart to heart conversation with my friends about her passion for their music. Too bad I couldn't stay after with my friends and talk to her, but seriously it is a show you DO NOT want to miss. Love
It's been two years and one month exactly since this album came out; I've listened to the thing a few hundred times at this point. For me, this is one of their best moments. This record is Beach House, but with a bit more 'rock' flavor. It's a very interesting piece. I've always felt a good number of the tracks have a vintage feel; the sound is somewhere in the 90s. I love this record.
Alex is amazing. I feel like he doesn't get the credit he deserves because everyone is so blown away by Victoria's gorgeous voice. I get that, but without Alex there would be no Beach House.
Wow not to say Depression Cherry wasn't good because I think it was a great album say what you want but this album Thank Your Lucky Stars has that Bloom feel to it, when I first heard Bloom it was something Ive never heard because each track flows into the next song so perfectly with unique I have never expedienced in my life it was and is a perfect from front to back and Thank Your Lucky Stars has that feel it. 2 albums in one year this is great and this album is amazing!!
+Terrell Thomas I think this is Beach House's best album. It returns to their earlier sound while also still containing the cinematic cyclical nature of Bloom.
damn, i really just coincidentally chose today to listen to this album which released a year ago today. i remember i listened to this with the girl i was in love with around that time. i am no longer with her, but i still love her. this album brings good memories of a rainy october with her.
why the comparison? they're both amazing albums by amazing artists. and you may have a completely different opinion after letting them both soak in awhile...
+Keegan Glenn that's what happened to me, re-listening to Depression Cherry right now and it's blowing my mind. It took a bit, but it's reaaallly growing on me now. I feel like there's a good amount of music like that
Magical music from this band. Their albums flow together in any order you play them. Victoria's voice is so easy to enjoy! Splendid guitar and orchestration. Beach House vibrations are heard with wondrous pleasure throughout my day. It's very soothing for the soul.
Instead of catchy tunes, they're making beautiful music. This album is difficult to put in words. It's less uniform than the other albums, but breaks new ground. Especially with the last 4 tracks. __ The Mundane 2. She's So Lovely - Nothing New Here For Me 3. All Your Yeahs - Just Takes Too Long To Get Going. 5. Common Girl - Aptly Title, But Sweet (Girl On The Sea Vibe). Soundtrack Worthy. The Amazing 4. One Thing - OH! Heeell YES!!! -All Of My Yeahs! 5. The Traveller - Other Worldly 7. Elegy to the Void - Transcendent 8. Rough Song - Cannot Put Into Words. Thank you, Beach House. 9. Somewhere Tonight - Glorious!!! (Victoria's Voice on the final 2 tracks is Superb) ___ The cover art does it little justice. There is some Brilliant Stuff here.
+RainyDayMerman Not since 'Dead Can Dance' has such music seeped into my soul, rendering me powerless. Rough Song is so lyrically brutal, yet seductively rhythmic. It takes my breath away. The words are heart-breakingly cruel, but the sound so suspicious and inviting. The contradicting elements force my audible senses into overload. It's almost too much to bear.
Best album, non stop bangers that flow so well together. It may not have there best songs. But every song is so constantly good it's a journey till the last second. Masterpiece.
Saw you in the concert in Madrid past November was simply magic, Ty for your music. (and the playing with lights was excellent perfect equilibrium for eye and ear)
After wearing this out over the past couple weeks I firmly believe it's a top 5 album of the year. It has an outstanding aura and sound, a sweeping depth without seeming muddled. A lovely piece of heaven once again from Beach House.
+soggy mini wheat Apparently this was recorded at the same time as Depression Cherry, but the songs felt similar enough to each other in vibe to warrant a second album! I dig how they're in the same vein as Depression Cherry but also work really well as a second album. Two amazing albums in two months is just blowing my mind.
would u rather they be good businessmen and hold off on releasing an amazing finished album because of concerns about oversaturation of the market or accusations of same-sameness from critics? id rather hear their music now as they finish it, not a year or two or five later like so many "other" artists who could spend eternity writing and recording but never come close to the brilliance of Beach House...
On Depression Cherry, the songs have an attitude of passive (even dazed, uncomprehending) observation. Here, the lyrics are sharp commentary, reject something stifling, and insist on change. This makes the two albums very distinct.
Another masterpiece, and although I do admit that Depression Cherry was more difficult to dissolve than the others, it holds some of my favorite Beach House songs: "Wildflower" & "Bluebird". TYLS however is very nostalgic for me; so comparable to their earlier works, but amped up and mature. I've concluded that "The Traveller" and "Rough Song" are magical songs. The end of "Rough Song" brought me to tears and made the whole album even more worth while! Bloom will always be my favorite of theirs, but never stop making music!!! 😭
Etched into the vinyl between the grooves and label of the Depression Cherry record are "Thank Your Lucky Stars" and "she's a fire in the night" (lyrics from all your yeahs). So obviously this album was not a surprise, it did not come out of nowhere
XDRory a lot of people make this album out to be a surprise thing, which it kind of was, but they put a lot of thought into it and it was meant to happen sometime based on the fact that it is written on the record itself
+Josh Guzek But it was a surprise to the public, there wasn't any promotion for it or pre-sales or singles released until the week of it's release. It's also important that it wasn't given to music critics prior to the release, but at the same time the fans received it. Of course it was not a surprise to the creators, they had to produce it and write it, but the etching was merely hints. I see what you mean, but they wanted to make something that was thought out as much of a surprise as possible.
I dunno why but the italics mailbox lettering seems super cozy. I can just picture a slightly run down little bungalow near the shore and there's a weathered and discolored letterbox on the front with those stickers. It's the end of the summer and the breeze is starting to get cold. The crowds are getting smaller and you can hear the birds a little more.
This album is fucking amazing! at first I didn't exactly love it but then it grew on me like no album had since a lot of time. It's funny because the exact same thing happened when I first listened to Beach House and now they're probably my favorite band. These two guys are geniuses.
I am just back from Bonnaroo 2019 where Beach House at This Tent was the highlight of my weekend. It seemed like they played "everything" in the catalog but of course that was impossible. They hit so many highlights. The back-lit scene and our heroes in silhouette made clear we were here for the music - that the show starred the music and the primary human element was us, the Bonnaroovians, the fans and newcomers dancing and shaking totems and staring spellbound at the light show, while our favorite tunes came clear in every note from right up there. It was heart-wrenching, honestly, an emotional roller-coaster ride. Here is a huge nod of gratitude to Beach House for Making Bonnaroo Better. Love from Tennessee.
I honestly did not like this album the first time but after repeated listens, I've realised how dark this one is and how much I love it. I've realised that all Beach House albums need a few listens before you 'get it'. Also, I kinda got lethargic after Depression Cherry, I mean 2 albums in 2 months is insane. I have yet to recover from DC and suddenly, TYLS comes out. But after repeated listens, you realised how fantastic and different both albums are. I just hope their next album is in 3 more years or something, to 'build up the hype'.
I feel like with Depression Cherry it was "On finally let's have a listen---well that was, that was just lovely!" then this came out of the blue, which was "BAHHHHHHHH THERE THEY ARE!" Depression Cherry was them reaching out; this is Victoria and Alex coming home. Keeping us on our toes. Like you, each album has to grow on me. But it makes my heart pump tinted blood that tattoos the lyrics on the underside of my skin to remain evermore, they're apart of me. And like a tattoo, it only happens over time.
I love Beach House studio albums. I also love seeing them perform live! I saw them at Forecastle a few years ago, and again at Headliners. Both in Louisville Kentucky. 🎤🎹🎸💞🎶
So many jams on this albumAll Your Yeahs, Common Girl, Rough Song and Somewhere Tonight are incredible. I hope Beach House will come to South Africa one day :).
After listening to this i feel the urge to re watch Twin Peaks and play some Julie Cruise. The last track on "TYLS" is very haunting and heart breaking. I would like to hear Beach House explore that sound on their next project.
