Howdy! fellow adventurers, I wanted to post a quick update on the Beagle Barge project. We're getting REALLY close to done (it might never be fully "done," but you know what I mean). The doors are still looming nemesis, but we'll get those done, too. Wavey and I are headed out on a 2 wheeled wander, so stick around for that.

Just an idea. Notice this on The Shanty Beagle helm seat. 2 pieces of driftwood and 2 hinges would make an easy wall mounted. folding helm seat. There if you want it gone if you don’t. If you leave it as a plank it would be as comfortable as bleachers at a little league game. Estimated sit time about an hour and a half tops. Keep bringing us on your amazing adventures.

Hi Breton! Just a quick comment that i love your videos. I have either been doing similar trips as your recent car caming trip or in the past have done boating trips and motorcyle tours .The introduction of the low budget steath way of travel has made my retirement on a Canadian pension much more fun and above all possible. Looking forward to watching you and Waveys slow float south on the beagle barge this winter! Tyler

I have been following you and enjoying your journey. Please give me your thoughts: one of the smartest things you did was to build the floor place below the top level of the boat. You avoid a lot of top-heavy problems while voting having said that what are your thoughts on building the same thing on top of a pontoon boat, I worry about the top heaviness.

Looks cozy Brento, good work!!! I found some 10"x 3/4" double sided velcro strips and use them to hold my oars up on the ceiling of my boat. They are beige, butI was thinking something the same idea would work well to hild up your curtains. The rope works but you will get tired of tieing each one after some time, The velcro just straps instantly over my oar handle and with it sticking to the back side, it fasens instantly (in three spots for ten foot heavy oars)! Hope your leg gets better soon, you are soon ready to go! Enjoy/BestRoy
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads Год назад
Hi Roy ;) the velcro is a good idea. I've used it before to hold gates open and what have you. You're right that it gets old quick tying the ropes. I also want to put fishing pole holders up on the ceiling to keep the poles out of the way. Shoot...maybe I need some oars too! :) or "sweeps" as the Hubbards called them. We are getting close, and for the first time I'm looking forward to winter:) Thanks for your thoughts Roy.
@roydesignedthat
@roydesignedthat Год назад
@@backwatersandbackroads For my rods stored on the ceiling, I used a length of nylon 3/4" strap screwed to a beam, in several spots to wave the strapping (put as many waves as rods) so the rods handles slide into these loops and then a short pc of velcrow to secur the rod 2/3rds down the rod for each! I'll try to get a picto you although I'm sure you know what you're doing when it comes to fishing rod holders!!!...BestRoy

3:00 probably a bit late for this response but id leave the bottom uncaulked to allow any water that gets behind there to drain out easily. Or maybe leave gaps in the caulk if you think it needs to be caulked at the bottom of the trim piece against the hull. Sometimes if you caulk the bottom of exterior trim it will hold water in behind the trim
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads 11 месяцев назад
I ended up not caulking the side trim for that reason.
@michaelosmon

15:06 I really like what you've done and i hope you won't be offended if i explain how you could take this shelf up a notch. I do a lot of finish carpentry, and I am only trying to help... I really dont see anything wrong, though. I just caught this and thought I'd try and help if i can. The driftwood piece by the milk crates is really cool looking...if you had attached that piece of driftwood onto the front of the shelf and lowered it enough to cover the shelf supports on the sides, it would result in a nice clean look. Also it would hide whatever light you might install under there. You could still notch the driftwood like you did, but the notches wouldnt need to be as deep. Such a simple thing really makes a big difference in the appearance. I love this boat you have....itd be a perfect setup for the sandbar i like. Hope you're having a great trip

I just learned about "The Great Loop" and it seems like the quintessential American adventure. I hope you have a blast. Edit: I commented before I even got a minute in and now I want to add to my comment. 😂 I think it is hilarious that you have all those kitty litter buckets and that immediately made me realize, you don't have a woman currently. Reason being, you can find all kinds of wonderful containers that are actually meant for food by going to Walmart, The Container Store, Amazon. A million places really but hey, for a solo guy, you are doing an awesome job. I don't say this as an insult, it's just funny because a woman would probably never reuse a kitty litter bucket for food storage but hey, necessity is the mother of invention. Maybe you will meet your next lady friend on your adventures. 😉 Anyways, your dogga-doo is too cute for words and I am going to watch the rest of the video. Thanks for sharing.
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads Год назад
Hi, welcome! I didn't know that about food containers. You're right that I'm sort of hardwired to reuse stuff and rarely think about buying (new) something already designed to solve the issue. Now if you ever see me using a kitty litter container that had USED litter in it...worry! Lol. Woman: it's gonna (obviously) take an unconventional lady to want to hook up with me ;) if she's out there, I'll probably find her on the rivers somewhere;) Thanks for finding our little channel. @backwatersandbackroads - I don't know if your friend that does metal work might do it or not. Maybe if he could make a tube rail that would run bow to stern to stand off side enough to protect your gutter and mainly the side of your house boat against docks and locks, making it not necessarily a thing that would need rubber bumpers. Also, when you are in a lock, use your motor to push stern against the side of the lock wall ( in idle) while you tie to movable up down slides at bow. This way, you keep your vessel against the wall without having to tie stern to it.🧜‍♂️

A couple of thoughts . Cover the butt ends of wood on the exterior woth epoxy to keep moisture from wicking up. Next for the horizontal trim use a composite material for the same reason that area is going to be exposed to a lot of water. Take the same epoxy and cover your fish cleaning statio make for a .uch easier clean up. Do not put your diesel heater on the outside exposed to the water and weather. I love 'Budget Travels', and the most expensive part of traveling is the hotels/motels. If you can avoid having to pay for a place to sleep you cut the cost of your trip by 50% to 75%. A boat is a great way to travel and have a place to sleep every night, but there are not many nice museums and other attractions by the waterway, so that's why I prefer to travel using a small SUV (RAV4) and simply sleep in the back with the rear seats folded down. At night you just go to a nearby truck stop or Walmart parking lot and you sleep there for free.

I wouldn't call it freeboard its more like a safety wall , freeboard wouldn't allow water to enter but whatever . One of my dreams is to go down the Mississippi to the Ohio and down the Tennessee to the Gulf and into the ICW area then back . I like the barge alot ! I think putting a dog house over the outboard would be a great idea and keeping those Samson posts is nice , placing the diesel heater under the gallie countertop and venting the exhaust out would be good .so you were born in 76 or 72 ? I'm from the class of 76 so that tells you how old i am LOL ! If i had the money i'd want a boat like yours ! If your around north east Wisconsin ( Tomahawk ) theres our huge swap meet for boat parts and outboards going on the 1st week of August ! Come over and introduce yourself , its for A>O>M>C>I> ! Anything and everything for boats !

I'm in Ontonagon. Mot far from tomahawk. ;) I do have some plans for the back deck. Has to stay light since it's a deck and no hull under (unfortunately). The concern I have with the diesel heater mounted inside is the smell. Every time I fill it up I'd have diesel residue smell for hours. Thoughts?

@@backwatersandbackroads the ones i see have an external fuel tank , mount that on the deck outside , diesels are hard starting when cold and when running your going to get a wiff every so often , im a retired trucker so i like the smell LOL !

@jeffashlock3360 a barge hull seems to be hard to find. A big pontoon or tritoon is muck easier and common. Email me, we can talk more. bnetz95959@yahoo.com

Well, if you put little snit where those bolts are on your boards anyways hi the boats at the same time measure how far up you have to go and make a little channel inside the board to cover the boards watching from Southern Alberta Canada

Great interiors, love the use of driftwood and the different tones. I was going to comment on balance because I see the watermark on side of the hull and it looks like close to half down at the back but you did mention that you are keeping and eye to that. There was a high end sports yacht brand that installed 2 bilge pumps at the back of the hull side by side, one 1200 and one 3500 gpm, the switch that activated the small one goes on the bottom of the hull, the other switch about 7 inch higher, if you are getting floded the second kicks in and if you are sleeping the noise of both pumps running is going to alert. Your front cleats are covered from outside access, are you taking the TW or the scooter on that trip?.

I do plan on having one bilge pump back there...with a hand pump back up.

Yes, I've seen your handle here for a long time. Thank you! Boats: I guess I just spend a lot of time looking around online, and I do occasionally come across even while out on adventures. The really good deals on the trailerable cabin boats are done or rare now. 5 or 10 years ago was the golden age

We're looking for a loop boat ourselves and wondered if a houseboat/toon style houseboat was doable. Is this the actual rig you're planning on using? Looks like it would be comfortable for the long haul, just wondering about bigger water like the great lakes
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads Год назад
Howdy. Folks have done the entire great loop on houseboats. I did the rivers side (lake Michigan to Carrabelle, Florida) with a 26-foot trailerable houseboat (here on my channel. 2018). There are a few places that definitely require planning and picking the right days to cross. Once on the great lakes again (assuming you're going counter clockwise?), that gets tricky, too. I plan to find out. Please stay tuned. :)

JUST A SUGGESTION... WHY WOULDNT YOU CLEAN THE FISH ON THE BOW AND MAKE A TRAY THAT GRIPS THE TOP RAIL AND CAN FLOP DOWN AGAINST THE RAIL WHEN NOT IN USE? THEN HOOK UP A PUMP AND HOSE AND YOU WOULDNT HAVE A MESS INSIDE OF NASTY FISH SCALES..LOL
