Welcome to BEAK WEEK! We will feature avian species each day.
Going up a size or two to our ratites!
Ratites are a diverse group of flightless and mostly large and long-legged birds! Examples include cassowary, rhea, and even kiwi.
The two resident species at Animal Adventure, featured members of the ratite group, are the ostrich and emu!
The ostrich of the park are a juvenile pair, just about to begin "sprouting" their adult plumage. Males are dark/black in color, hens more brown/tan in color. The largest flightless bird, they can be quite inquisitive and do enjoy daily enrichment!
Our emu? Quite a bunch! Smaller than the ostrich, and both sexes sharing the same feather coloring, emu can be identified by the noises they make during breeding season! Females produce a drumming sound from within the body, while males impress the females with a pig-like grunt or belch! Eggs are a beautiful emerald and aqua green.
Consider a gift of support to fill these big beaks! $10 will feed either our emu or ostrich. Which ratite team are you on?
