Trimmed up Beak’s beak a couple of week's ago. This is a regular maintenance task for cross beaks to keep their beaks the right length for eating. Beaks knows the routine and typically is patient with the process. As you’ll see though, he does like to give lots of advice on my technique.
A chicken’s beak grows continuously. In a normal chicken the wear and tear of pecking at the ground keeps the beak worn down to the correct length. This doesn’t happen with a severe cross beak like Beaks, so we snip top or bottom when either gets too long and starts to interfere with his ability to eat.
The beak itself is like fingernails - the white portion at the end is dead and can be cut without pain or injury to the bird.
