This is such a sad event - and i understand that Nature has its own ways. 402 was a beautiful bear and she leaves a legacy on the river possibly unmatched by any other sow.
For people assuming she should have ran away: The assumption that she might have lived if she got out of the water, is very unlikely as 469 was predating on her for whatever reason. That means he was hunting her. He would have chased her down. She had to stand her ground as that was the only way that she might have saved herself. It's complicated but its similar to how you, as a human, in certain circumstances, would only have the chance to live if you fought back. This is usually your only recourse when a bear decides that instead of just mauling you, it's going to EAT you. If a grizzly wants to eat you and is calmly stalking you like prey, or he rushes you and despite you attempting to play dead, he starts casually eating you, you're probably dead meat. Black bears on the other hand are more likely to respond to you attacking back, because you're more evenly matched sometimes and for other reasons we don't know. But yeah that logic, the logic of it being a bit of a more even match might help you understand why her defending herself and not backing down was her best bet, especially because the bears were VERY evenly matched. I do admit though that fighting out of the water would probably have made it much harder to kill each other...and she obviously couldn't have drowned (which is how she actually died,) but the chances were really high that he was going to kill her. I know this stuff because there's a video about the incident where rangers and other people from the park or whatever explained what actually happened. The other bear behavior stuff can be verified by reading the book "Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance" by Stephen Herrero, which is the gold standard in the bear behavior world as far as I've seen, and a good read even for a casual bear enthusiast.
Yes ive had that book for a year now. I've read alot of it. Learn all you need from that book. Steven herrero is the best bear biologist out there. Hes investigated hundreds of human fatalities by brown bears.
They call themselves professionals or that they try to teach people to be safe around bears but they always end up being mauled to death because they think they know what's going on. They don't, when something is unpredictable it is just that. Unpredictable. I have been hunting all my life. I have hunted brown bear and black bear. You will never know what a brown bear is going to do. They are the most unpredictable creature on this earth. Hippos being second. In bear country I am always carrying a side arm. Bear spray is a joke. Activists will say anything to protect animals at the expense of human life. I carry bear spray but my gun always comes out first. Human life is much more precious than a wild animals life. Mountain lions are another animal I despise in the woods. They are very unpredictable as well. Don't let animal lovers convince you otherwise. I love animals but will save a human before any animal.
It just breaks my heart that when they were apart from each other, they just didn’t keep going away from each other. Dang it!! Rest peacefully beautiful 402😢💔🐾🐻🐾
@@garysmcdermott He was pissed off as an alpha male bear. She was in a river that was HIS. She stood up to him and slashed his left shoulder in at least 2 places. Male bears own everything they can see and she stayed where he was so as he felt that nasty shoulder he decided to make her pay. He wasn't short of food he was short of human style impulse control. No bears have impulse control. Everything bears deal with is a life or death decision or activity. 469 was acting like a bear in his prime who will not be crossed. Since 402 had never been attacked and killed prior to this means she was not expecting this to happen and had not practiced sensible withdrawl from the scene. BEARS WILL BE BEARS. Even with loads of food bears fight because they are bears.
Bald Eagles kill Bald Eagles Lions Kill Lions Bears Kill Bears and so On.. My dad went off too war in 1942 and when it was all Over 50 million people had Died
But most animal species don't kill others of their species for food and most don't kill females. If every bear killed other bears the species would not survive.
@@CastleMc its not about food..female bald eagles kill females of a nest and throw out the eaglets and take the male for their own mate .. lion cubs get killed females also.. bears kill cubs.. alot going on.. anfd if you wanna mention food human cannibals were on earth for a while a lot going on on earth

@@dancingtrout6719 I watch enough nature videos to know you're absolutely correct. We are seeing more live cams around the world , witnessing what nature does. It seems like some people have a hard time accepting what animals do or why.
My thought, not knowing anything about tye bears history, was that this was a fight among two males for the female sitting on shore. That was crazy to find it was a female who died. Now I'm wondering what started this? Long and torturous
Anyone here commenting about how disgusting this is or why didn’t they try and stop it needs a HUGE reality check. It’s a freezing cold DARK world not peaches n’ cream…..
If you watch carefully you will see at least 2 fresh wounds on the boar bears left shoulder. Probably from 402. He is a big bear and apparently wanted revenge. Mean is mean. Bears are so much like violent humans that the simply have no non-violent genes. They learn and remember just like us. Once that shoulder felt torn his grudge went into overdrive. Others have commented that if 402 had left the river she would have lived. I agree BUT...he would have attacked 402 every time they crossed paths and he would eventually have killed her when he had the opportunity. ONLY VERY FOOLISH PEOPLE THINK ANY BEAR IS JUST LIKE DISNEY PRODUCED MEDIA. No intelligent person can even passively think that way except in an environment COMPLETELY WITHOUT WILD ANIMALS. 402's passing makes room for another apex predator in a very deadly neighborhood. IF YOU BELIEVE IN "BAMBI" RENT A FANTASY THAT SAYS IT IS A FANTASY, STOP WATCHING ACTIVITY AMONG APEX PREDATORS THAT HOLD GRUDGES AND LOOK AT ONE ANOTHER AS FOOD, JUST LIKE THEY LOOK AT HUMANS.
@@348Tobico Those are his natural markings. 469 had a diamond-shaped blonde patch on his left shoulder and splotches on his head. Bears don't hold grudges; that is a human characteristic that people attribute to wild animals in the same way people anthropomorphize bears in Disney media. Bears don't look at things and categorize them either. They live on pure instinct which is based on opportunism. A person may be food or a threat. Another bear might be food or a threat or a mate; it all depends on the situation. People are a predator to bears, so a bear can see us as a threat (the entire reason momma bears go berserker all over humans to protect her cubs.) They can see us as food (Grizzlyman :() The last thing that I'll point out is that the assumption that she might have lived if she got out of the water, is very unlikely as 469 was predating on her for whatever reason. @@plaguerat6356Bears do hold a grudge So do wild cats. There is proof of bears and tigers holding grudges. It is not only a human trait. Many animals hold grudges. Racoons will hold them indefinitely. Not sure what you read or watched but that is false. You even said many things that prove they hold a grudge. He was predating her. Something happened between them and he held a grudge. Their is so much we don't know about brown bears. Even the so called experts get mauled and killed. They eventually all have a time up. They find out they knew nothing when reality sets in. I have been hunting in bear country my whole life. Brown bears are the mist unpredictable animals on earth next to hippos. Never trust one or never trust an expert. Carry a gun. Yes have bear spray with you but pull that gun out first. Bear spray has failed many times. If their is any wind you are screwed. Carry a 10mm if you care about your life in bear country.
I think she was sick and dying. McKate posted a video of 856 jolting 402 from a nap less than a week ago. He looked like a he was testing if he she was still alive.
@@carolkelly2159 How would anyone know? Both 856 and 469 acted oddly toward her with the later having fatalities consequences. Animals, especially predators are able to sense things like weaknesses in others.
@@snappingbear She did not exhibit any signs of being ill or injured-she was fine. Mike et al reiterated that during the chat and emphasized that this was a predatory attack. And 469 has apparently killed other bears before. 856 probably mistook her for a male at a distance and he quickly backed off.
@@chococrumb bear eats nearly anything. When a cub dies it is often also eaten. Polar bear is known to hunt other bear when food is scarce. Mostly it isn't worth the risk and they won't kill eachother - one backs off. Still, like said, this is an odd case.
I admit to never seeing such a relentless attack by one bear on another - now, wolves will kill an unknown lone wolf…but typically don’t consume the dead wolf. Mother Nature threw me a curve ball on this incident!
Ok the fact that they are fighting in water is crazy but...the way she died felt too easy to be true. It doesn't feel like he is holding her down with much effort....it is almost as if she gave up fighting...
She was almost 30. That's like 95 in human years. It's very possible she was sick and didn't have the strength to fight anymore. 469 was preying on her and some other bear seemed to test her as well earlier in the week so possibly they could sense she was weak.
@deniseh5269 That's really unnecessary. You have no idea what happened to Otis. No one does. He could have simply not woken up from hibernation. To speculate like this when someone is already upset is cruel.
I saw a boat going by and I thought maybe they would try and distract the fight end it,but they just kept going, maybe didn't even see or heard them with the sound of the motor. Glimpse of hope ?
no one is allowed to intervene with wildlife in a national park. it's a naturally occurring event and sadly, we just have to let it play out. it's for all of the bear's best interest long term. a couple months ago one of Grazer's cubs was attacked by a male and was suffering for days before the little guy finally passed. hard to watch but it must be as it is.
We do not to be reminded by people how nature works we are intelligent and get that part but having empathy and emotions is what makes us special as humans and sets us apart I refuse to be desensitized loving pure and chast from afar expecting nothing in return is the purest form of love and expressing grief is natural if you are not affected by this then I say you are on your wY to giving up your human race card
Yes. I saw these beautiful creatures dance with a brown child in the jungle book. These bears are kind and like wearing grass skirts. Their deaths are tragedies. Stupid elk are just big dumb animals that dont dance and sing.
Why didn't the Rangers stop it??? 😢 Is the salmon run horrible this year that a bear would feel the need to predate on another bear? Otherwise, what a jerk of a bear to be surrounded by salmon and take the life of a bear!
There was much more to this story. 469 caught 402 and 477(on the shore) in the act. 469 was overcome by jealous rage. This wasn't the first time, you know. 469 could only be pushed so far. She was going to divorce him and take everything. He says she was the love of his life to this day. But he had to send a message. In the aftermath, it seems 469 and 477 have been seen denning together, though they claim to just be friends. Sure they are....... But then, what consenting adult bears do in their dens is none of my business.
Hey I have no idea what any of you are talking about. Can someone explain? Sounds like a marriage gone wrong not wild bears acting on primitive behaviour
@@OttoByOgraffey Exactly! But I can't help but empathize with 469. He was obviously conflicted. But that long glance to the shore at 477 sealed 402's fate. He knew it was wrong to drown 402 but being around 477 just felt so pure and honest. No bitching and judgmental backtalk. Just kindness and understanding. I was hoping 469 and 477 would just leave and start over somewhere else. I wasn't a fan of 402 but she didn't deserve to die like that.
We get it, nature is brutal, stuff like this is commonplace but it can still be sad whilst being understandable. People are allowed to have opinions, nothing infantile about that.
He really let her float away like she was gonna live, before swimming back over just to lock his jaws over hers and hold her underwater until she drowned... May I request a FEMALE bear to be stuck in the woods with? Almost as if it were personal... A man will shoot you, the kids, the dog and himself, but in animals? Of course, it would be worse if it were a man and probably start Fing the dead body or sum shit, there's no end to the emotional, environmental, systematic and physical destruction man will cause... but I cannot fathom seeing this behavior in animals, I have never seen anything like it. Please do not follow in the human's footsteps of domestic violence
You Gotta Be The Most Nieve Person On The Planet. I Bet You Were Born, Raised & Still Live In "The City". Because People Who Live In A City, Literally Have No Idea What's Going On In The "Real World" Because THIS Exact Same Thing, Happens EVERY Single Day! The Fact You Didn't Know Or Just Assume It Did Out Of Basic Common Sense Is Mind Blowing.... Yep, Bears Kill Other Bears. Probably Kill More Bears Then They Do Any Ofher Animal In Fact. Cubs Are A Delicious Luxury Breakfast For Big Male Bears. They Wake Up Every Morning A Search For Females With Young Cubs, So They Can Kill The Cubs Specifically. Because If They Kill All Her Cubs, She Will Go Into Heat Again, And The Male Can "Mate" With Her. It's Funny & Sad, How City Folk, Especially Liberals, As Yourself (Call It A Wild Guess) All Seem To Think Bears Are Big Fluffy, Loving & Sweet Cuddly Animals. Who Eat Mostly Grass, Berries, Other Vegetation Etc. In Fact. Even The All Magical Internet Even Says That To Be True. Well, Now Ya Know, That Even The Internet LIES To You! (Omg Right?) Yep. Biologists Put Collars On A Few Bears, With A Small Camera On Them. So They Could Track Them, Watch What They Do & Eat... We'll After Collecting Back The Footage. They Saw That The Bears Went Out & Killed Cubs, Other Animals, Every Single Day! Unless, They Found A Kill. Still, The Fact Is They Eat Meat=Protein Most Of The Time, And NOT Vegetation, Berries, Like We're Told😂
