Bear Track Identification - Yellowstone

When hiking, backpacking, and camping in the Yellowstone ecosystem, bear track identification is important to me because I like to know what I am dealing with when it comes to the number, size, and type of bears that are around the area. Especially when camping I like to pick spots in a general area that do not have a high volume of grizzly bear activity. Although I have never had a problem with a grizzly at night - it has always been black bear - I feel much more comfortable around black bear at night because of the general size difference. I published this video a couple years ago and now that hiking and camping season is close (if coronavirus goes away) I though it could be useful to people that would like to gain some knowledge on track identification.

Fascinating! I wouldn't want to look up from the track and have to visually identify the bear which was charging me...

So very interesting, thank you Stan!Outdoors people love reading tracks but really have no good opportunity to learn because it is mostly in writing, where you explain it with words and in detail photos. It is truly like being there! Please pass on your knowledge, it will serve well! I always wonder how you can walk so confidently walk all alone in the into true wilderness knowing there could be anything waiting in bushes ahead of you or behind you...you go even with snowshoes which would make any defense rather difficult. I would be a nervous wreck and could not wait to get back to safety. One more important question: I have seen you come upon bears a little ways off, but some see you and stare at you, but you stop to watch and film. Could a cranky bear not take one look at you and start charging no matter how far it may be. They obviously see you. Some sneaky bear may slinky on into the forest, track around and stalk you! You see, I would not be good enjoying a hike! I wonder often what goes through your mind the moment you see some bad-ass grizzly take notice of you.....

David everything you said in your comment has happened to me multiple times. People don’t realize that I am never looking for close encounters, it just happens as a result of the number of hours and miles I put in. When you do come upon a grizzly at close range (which means it is a surprise to you) the best thing I have found to do is to analyze the situation and determine the bear’s mood. Next you already should know how and what you will do if the bear charges. Even when I see a bear a couple hundred yards away the first thing I do is analyze his behavior and mood. I have moved away and out of sight from grizzly bears that are several hundred yards away countless times. I don’t always get all the Grizzlies I see on video. Thank you for your comments.

Love the passion Stan. Should be a lot of activity going on right now. Curious about how far you think the Grizzlies range goes outside of the Park these days ?

I LOVE tracking. But NE Ohio is not much for bears! And if you can’t observe through the years, well...you know. So this was a great help. I usually do a western trip annually to either Montana, Wyoming or north Idaho. I will be more confident in identifying in the future. Not cocky...just more confident! 😉

Dear Stan, what is your opinion about Timothy Treadwell?

When you treat wild animals that way then that is what you get. You should at least spray a bear with bear spray if it gets that close. Teach it to stay AWAY from people. People should not approach a bear when they detect one.
