I truly think bears see better than most think they do. I know I've been spotted in the stand. The bears demeanor changes, they start too look a bit uncomfortable with the situation but do not flee like deer. Its usully followed by a nose in the air and licking their snout to scent check. Thanks, Bernie. I respect your expertise! In fall 2021 a big sow and 3 yearling cubs came into the thicket where I was bowhunting for deer, on the ground, with a chest-high camo screening. They spent 10 minutes within 15 yards of me (yes, I was nervous!). Three hours later, dusk approaching, they came back out of the corn field and spent another 10 minutes within 20 yds of me. I raised my bow both times, in case I'd need to defend myself. Second time I got my phone out and snapped a couple pix. So I was not motionless. I interpret their return visit to indicate they didn't detect my presence earlier. I'm an avid fan of Nose Jammer. An argument can be made that it saved my life that evening. When I'd had enough, and dusk was going to put them at a huge advantage, I chased them off by shouting and blowing my whistle. Boy, did they scamper and grunt and huff in chagrin! Up the ridge they ran, disbelieving and humiliated that I had been that close to them. One of my most intense memories of a dozen years bowhunting. While I did see a doe within range between the bruin visits, I didn't know if I'd dare shoot it, lest the bear find it before I could, or chase me off as I tried to field dress! I share this, my only experience with bears, just as an interesting story.

I agree with you. I have been picked off by bears when deer had passed by me without ever knowing that I was anywhere around.
