While on our summer trip up the west coast of Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, we found bears in the wild getting their morning breakfast!
In this video, we take the dinghy to the eastern side of Tofino through the McBey Islets to Dawley Passage Provincial Park where we found the first black bear. After oohing and awing over this amazing creature, we headed northeast into the Kirshaw Islets where we find bear #2. Unfortunately, bear #2 was quick to get back into the brush so we headed back to the Tofino Resort and Marina for a warm shower and lunch!
Overall, successful bear watching trip. We hope you get as excited as we were to see wild black bears!

This one year a young grey whale was hanging out in Grice bay for the summer, you do not want to get down wind of them when they exhale.

I watch your video's all the time in Australia. I'm from Oregon so I like the videos in the Pacific Northwest. Have you guy gone up the Columbia River yet? I was born and raised in Hood River which is 60 miles east of Portland. Love your video's. Cheers Don Mays

donvaledon1 no we haven’t gone beyond Astoria but hope to go as far as Idaho later in 2021. After our recent trip down there we realized just how beautiful that area is!

really enjoying the videos. Curious what size dingy you have on your N40, and what the max size dingy you could think could reasonably fit on deck.

Hi Mike, glad you're enjoying the videos. We have a N43 with the dinghy placed across the beam and the max dinghy size you can fit with this arrangement is 11'2" staying within the rails on the boat deck. Placing a dinghy on angle and slightly parallel to the boat may allow a larger dinghy although taking up more real estate.

Really enjoy your videos! We are looking for a 48DA from 2007+, cant wait to get out there and run into you guys out in the sound! You don't by chance know anyone that will be giving up their 50' slip, do you? I think it's going to be harder to find moorage in Seattle than a boat.

Is there a distance you are required to stay for the bear’s safety?

Just came aboard on your blog, help me understand your circumstance. You guys still work, or just play. Love the boat, are these boats made to order or are they spec? What is the range of the N40. And your cruise speed wx permitting?
@mvfreedom
@mvfreedom 5 лет назад
Unfortunately we still work full time jobs and enjoy boating as much as we can on weekends/holidays/vacations. Nordhavn has standard production models but each boat is typically made to order. The range of the 43 is approximately 2500 - 4000 nautical miles depending on the speed ranging from 8.5 - 5.5 knots respectively.

Thanks for the reply. Currently would like to follow a N40 or another NordH around the globe to see if it checks off the box. Pleasant journeys.

@@mvfreedom ummm, not so sure about those "approximately 2500-400nm" statement. From all I can see, at 1200gal, even at 5.5knts, the range will be well short of 4knm, especially in open water, where waves, wind and current will lower that # by 40%. Even in the Nordhaven atlantic rally, the 43' in that was "tight" on fuel from the Bahamas to Azores, so they pumped another 100gal in it ~3/4 of the way through from the 76', if I remember right. and that distance is only 2140nm! I believe they were going 6knts. the rule of thumb is ~20 prop hp will use 1gal/hr. So, if your boat needs 60prop hp to go x knts, you'll use 3gal/hr. From what I can tell, a 43' will go ~2500nm at 5knts in open ocean crossings. It would be a nice data point on the mileage your getting in bay/coastal cruising.

Question: When you boat in British Columbia waters and stop at places like Tofino, do you have to check out with US Customs/ Immigration and check in with Canandian customs / immigration?
@jamesweigh3178
@jamesweigh3178 3 года назад
Not sure if they replied. I believe they checked in with Canada customs in Victoria.
