I have just started with a straight razor, Boker Engelbert Graf von Berg backed up with a Boker Barberette and a Mercur 34C HD. Did my first shave on the straight razor today, my first straight razor shave, with a few days growth. Main problem was being slow and drying out. I found the Barberette the most difficult to use, not much feel of feedback from it. Thank you so much for the videos, couldn't have done a straight shave without them. Would like to see something on difficulties with the different types of razor and how to overcome them. With regard to the reply on body hair, in my experience this can be shaved off any of the straight bits with a razor sharp knife.
I have both styles of shavettes, "the best machines are simple in design" - these shavettes just reinforce that expression. A really excellent presentation, thank you Geo. " Let the razor do the work" is my internal mantra when I am using a straight razor!
Does anyone else come here just to watch him shave? I have hundreds of razors i know what works for me but i stiol tune in daily to learn more and to watch him shave 😂😂😂🤷♂️
Absolutely correct Paul, after you get a few shaves in, muscle memory kicks in and it becomes second nature. You don't need to think too much about it. But then you need to deal with those super soft cheeks👶
geofatboy ok so I have been using this razor all week and getting moderately better. I am right hand dominant so not switching hands a lot just yet. I would like to be fairly comfortable with one hand before I throw myself a cure egg ball. Anyway I am noticing that my beard grows way faster using this razor compared to a single blade double edge razor. I am pretty close to bbs with the artisan blades. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Take care, Paul. 🇨🇦😎
Nice amount of detail in this demonstration, Geo. It looked, too, like you enjoyed shaving yourself with this Japanese style razor, and, yes, it looked like it did an exceptional job in just one pass. A demo to definitely pique one's curiosity and desire to try one of these out. Thank, Geo, once again, for a very worthwhile "show." Best wishes. Cheers.
This is my go-to razor. I really like the secure (and easy to insert) design that holds the blade secure. I usually go 2/3 shaves per blade, and the blades are either $12 for 20 or $85 for 200. Good deal
Great video!!! I went from multi blade contraptions to safety razors about five years ago. I have always admired the Japanese-style straight razors, but have been afraid to try them. You just convinced me to give them a go!!!! Besides, women like facial scars.😀
A pox on cartridge razors! I use a kamisori like this one. I find the scales on a straight razor sometimes get in the way of my fingers. Not so with the Artist Club. Very comfortable & easy to use. Thanks for the video GFB.
Hi Geo another great demonstration of how to use a straight razor out of all shaving videos I have found your video's the most helpful and your technique for me has been the best to follow. I do enjoy watching you shave with a straight razor. Look forward to your next video. Kind regards Gordon Christie
Very nice instructional video. Thanks! Only one small remark. For those who need them, the subtitles were in the way (a bit 'in the face') and made it hard to see what you were doing. Liked it anyway.
Again, Yeah man, another great video lesson you did, really, one full year ago today July 13, 2020. As I wrote that I realized you probably made this video 2 to 5 days before you posted it. Great luck to you, man.
Interesting video, I did try use the shavette but atlas I only have mobility of one arm and nicked myself too many times using shavette even I went slow and easy so had to switch to safety razor to finish the job.
Nicely done Geo, a great demo of the power of that razor. I’ll always have a slightly softer spot for the old Weck razors in terms of favourite shavette, but the Feather artist club razors are great, and definitely the best of the currently produced shavette style razors, I love my DX. 😌👍
If you’d like to borrow one of mine (and some Kismet blades, they’re really good) please feel free to drop me a message. I’m in the U.K. but I’ll do the shipping one way. This was a comparison shave I did last week with a small straight ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ld6airB9Rfk.html
Sterling Campbell all the purchases I’ve made have been done on eBay, but you have to be patient waiting for the deals. I’ve paid between £6 and £20 for mine. My favourite style is the plastic scaled Sextoblade.
@@bendycard Yes, I'd specifically want a Sextoblade. I take it one of those hair shaper razors that hold the same type of blade wouldn't work? Thank you for your reply.
Hi man, great videos! I'd like to ask which razor you would recommend to women (derma planning aka shaving for women)? I've been bing watching your videos, but I couldn't come to a conclusion myself😆
is there a big difference between the professional/super professional blades you used vs regular double edged blades broken in half (which is what I was told to do when I purchased my shavette)?
Hello Geo, i am your fan and i am italian. I have many feathers in my routine and i am very satisfied about the precision and the feel and they are absolutely well built. But i have to say :now, the customers are appreciating the crappy chinese clones of them at about 1/6 of the price (see them on aliexpress). What about them ? Thanks 😀
Greetings from the USA 🇺🇸 Giuseppe! I did not know that there were cheap knockoffs of this razor. Similar to the Q Shave and Ming Shi knock offs of the Merkur Futur safety razor. I'll have to get my hands on one to do a comparison review. Thanks for the info.
I've just bought a cheap one off aliexpress as I literally can't afford a feather one at the moment. I just want to ask can you use the feather blades in the cheap knock offs or do they just work in the Feather razor? Thanks
I trully believe that your most dificult period in your job, is the time waiting your beard to grow.. I'm sure that you wish for a button from Santa.. You push it, beard grows.. lol.. Nice work!!
Any tips, just started using a straight razor, I have a full beard, so I'm just doing lines on my chins, but I'm taking the neck all the way up to the obvious lines. My issue is that the day after its very itchy and I get a little red like irritated skin sort of. Any tips?
I stabbed myself in the finger with a fork when preparing baked potatoes last night. I don't think this kind of razor is for me. I have a left hand but it's pretty useless. I'm the absolute polar opposite of ambidextrous. I believe I only have a left arm for balance so I don't topple over. I forgot to ask... Curious... Are the blades standard for this particular brand or 'all' japanese razors. How long have they been around?
Maybe, just maybe first time I see you cut yourself 15:07 and have some skin irritation and that's because you've used it an very aggressive razor after not shaving from a several days. That happens to all of us. Anyway awesome shaving and that needs some skills to use straight razor Japanese style.
AGV-Yep, you are correct, after more than a couple days of growth being shaved off I wound up with a few little bumps in the neck area. A nice once over with the alum block and it calms everything down and it disappears pretty quickly.
That's actually the hardest place to shave, that's why a lot of gents grow hair so they don't shave those areas. It's not a real shaving video unless you shave your entire face. This way you can see the whole process, not just part of it.
Does anyone know how those different blades compare to the DE Feather blade? I've used a shavette with a Feather DE blade and it's just too harsh for me.
@@AverageReviewsYT I've tried changing up my angles, but it seems changing blade manufactures makes more of a difference. Using a Mekur or Pol Silver blade makes an immediate difference.
You have 5 different Artist Club blades to choose from. Choose one that is milder than the Super Pro.shavenation.com/collections/feather-shavette-razors
Hey, geofatboy. I have a few questions. I just got into wet shaving ('m currently using a DE safety razor), and would at some point like to try out a straight razor/shavette. The thing is, I'm partially paralyzed on the left side of my body, which means I can't grip things with my left hand very well, and that I can't pull my skin taut. Is it a bad idea to try to shave both sides of your face with one hand when using a straight razor? Is it a bad idea to shave with a straight razor and not pull the skin taught? If it does turn out to be safe to use a straight razor with only one hand and not pull the skin taut, would this particular razor, with the non-folding handle, be a good choice? Thanks!
Hey dude. I recently started shaving with one of these razors. I never tend to stretch my skin with my free hand, only using awkward facial expressions lol. There's a barber on RU-vid called Barber Turko from UK who posts a lot of shavette shaving videos and I noticed he doesn't switch hands. It's a year since you posted so guessing you have either already given up or are a master by now. Hope it's the latter. :) All the best mate!
If only those Feather blades weren't € 18,00 a pack. 90 cents a piece. Thats for one or 2 shaves max. Are there any aftermarket blades. Even Feather DE blades cost €0.50 a piece. I like there products, but for that price ill look for something more affordable to shave with, like DE Voskhod blades. The reason why feather is no 1 with modern barbershops is that not many can hone a real straight razor.
Actually the reason Feather Artist Club Razors are popular in modern barber shops is that the Barber needs to use a replaceable blade razor by law. For hygienic reasons. You can't use the same blade on two clients. Feathers are popular cause they're the best. If you're paying big bucks for a straight razor shave, $1 or $2 for a blade is not much expense to the barber.
i don't think that today it was so nice... you have many spots ... with hairs... it is visible.. maybe you needed a second pass... for sure. anyway amazing
Nice video. I am a straight razor shaver but sometimes i use a shavette and tha’t is one shavette i’m gone buy some day. 👍👍 I have a youtube channel if you are intrested to se some nice Swedish shaves just take look. Have a great day and take care. 🤘😃🤘
Observation ~ The pure "excitement" on your face right after you said take it all off was BRILLIANT ! ! ! Your eyes lit up like the Fourth Of July ! Like you couldn't wait to get that scruff the hell off your face with a super sharp razor blade. Fantastic video indeed. Have a GREAT weekend Mr. Geofatboy. Cheers from Colorado Springs , Colorado USA
William- Great observation, and you are absolutely correct! I hate having a few days of beardage on my face and I can't wait to get it off! I love how this blade takes it off effortlessly. All the best from Chicago to Colorado.
One of the problems with watching your videos is that I can only watch ONE per day. The reason? Every time I watch one, I am compelled to lather up again and shave.
