By editing, I meant the way the clips were chosen and sequenced to fit the music. Without any editing, this video would have lasted for days (most of the time showing nothing but a tree) without any music. You see, each clip is taken from much longer footage. Cameras are placed in the woods focused on the scratching tree. The cameras pick up a whole lot of nothing for hours, then finally a bear comes along. The bear spends a few minutes sniffing around and stretching, then the bear leans against the tree and scratches its back, slowly at first, then faster and faster. The bear stops, sniffs the tree some more, maybe curls up and takes a nap, wakes up and repeats sniffing and stretching and scratching, walks off. Hours later another bear comes along and spends time at the tree, but only a little time sratching its back. This happens over and over for days. The *unedited* footage is *everything* all of the cameras captured for days. To make this video, a professional and very talented *film editor* (or a whole team of editors) watched *all* of that unedited footage, hours upon hours of it, from more than one camera, and found the fun bits - where the bears were scratching their backs vigorously. The editor had to make a choice where each clip would begin and end to cut out the boring parts. There was no music actually playing in the woods; the music track was added by the film editor(s). To fit the rythm of the added music, the clips had to be carefully placed in a certain order and shortened even more, by once again choosing the exact points when the clips begin and end. After many tries, the editor(s) had cut all clips to fit bears' movements to the music. The editor(s) made all those clips come together just right so they began when the song began and ended when the song ended. That was a lot of editing work, it was brilliant, and it deserves to be recognized.

TheDutchyNL Well, you sent me off to do some research. Yup, bears scent-mark trees in their territory by rubbing against them. They also claw and bite them. Generations of bears will use the same tree for years, which makes it easier for photographers to film them. Interesting tidbit - cubs will rub against a tree a mature male has marked to pick up some of his scent, so he will be less likely to attack them. Cool. I learned something today.

I just watched this particular episode, "Mountains", about an hour ago and had to rewind twice to watch these particular scenes. They are so very funny! The show has more footage that are just as priceless. I need to send this around to everyone I know! My first thought wasn't of "Jungle Boogie", which fits perfectly, but of Baloo the Bear in The Jungle Book. Baloo showed the same joy of scratching his back on a tree. Thank you, BBC and David Attenborough for providing us with these beautiful adventures all these years. All of this will be gone someday, sadly, and people will have to look at videos like this to see the wonder of Mother Nature they have missed.
