The problem with skin scents for me is that I don’t want to struggle to smell my own perfume. I want a scent bubble that I can enjoy all day. I don’t care much if other people can smell me, but if I can’t smell me, well that’s annoying. But everyone enjoys perfume in their own way, and you’re 💯 correct that skin scent does not automatically equal a bad perfume.
@dr.claire.perfume

I think that's how I feel with the really weak ones. It's good to be able to enjoy your own fragrance and not have to search for it. 👌

To me this is the biggest issue with fragrance: most of skin scents are actually perfumes with bad projection and poor longevity. I think longevity is what defines a true skin scent.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume Год назад
To me longevity is a separate but sometimes correlating thing. There are those fragrances that just don't project for most of their lifetimes that lead to huge disappointment though. Some fragrances can be eternal but never more than a skin scent. 🙂

My grand mother used to (way) overspray Youth-Dew from Estée Lauder. We still speak about it in the family.. She died 20 years ago😂(RIP grand-maman, I love you) I think a lot of people don’t enjoy smelling strong perfumes from other then themselves. So IF I had to choose, skin mode would be my choice.. in respect for my loved ones and others 😅

Hiìiiiiii Dr. Smith! I love this topic - one that heavily influences so many perfume reviews. If forced to, I would go with skin scents. I love a good beastmode fragrance for the right situation, but most days, a skin scent is what is called for. For me, good manners and consideration for others will always trump my own desire to be "noticed" for my scent. 💯💯💯

I'm new to your channel but absolutely love it. 💕 This is a really great topic and kind of addresses one of my own philosophies of fragrance which is that perfume is like a wordless conversation. The top notes are what you say to the general public or your beckoning finger "come hither". The heart notes are for your more intimate friends and those you are comfortable being physically closer to (or would like to be closer to). The base is for those you are the most comfortable with: lovers and best friends. Sorry if that's a little to poetic. I had the pleasure of being exposed to Alien a few weeks ago at a club. The sillage whipped my head around and hooked me. The jasmine (to me) is definitely a narcotic that gives a sense of innocence but with a hint of naughtiness lying underneath. It makes you want to get closer. It definitely made me ask them what they were wearing and order it for my partner 😇😂 Thanks again for the great content on your channel. I especially like the perfumery science ones since I'm an amateur perfumer. I'd really love to see a video on oriental fragrances and the various subclasses thereof.

Hello! What a fabulous comment! Thank you! I will look into doing more perfume science. They take a long time to plan unfortunately, so my day job gets in the way. Have you been doing perfumery long and do you have a teacher or are you self taught? I think your breakdown of the perfume layers is very insightful, that is a exactly it, exactly what you want! And yes Alien is a fab one for attracting people, I think it's mesmeric. 😂 Thanks for watching ❤️

I think many people take getting a compliment toooo seriously. If you are in the grocery store & have on one out of a million perfumes on the market, OF COURSE you smell good,,, to SOMEBODY. The stores usually stink in general. Sometimes it's not that WHAT you have on actually is groudbreaking, it's the fact they picked up on you smelling better than the surroundings, or they noticed a scent at all. You walk in McDonalds wearing a $5 body mist from a drug store, you WILL get a compliment if anyone is in there. Straight facts!
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume Год назад
Yes, if people smell pretty much anything it can be an improvement and so get a compliment for very little reason inherent to the fragrance itself. Also smelling something close up is almost a forensic way to smell fragrance. Things can smell very different after some wear time and through the air through projection from people's skin and clothing.

I get a lot of compliments about my perfume, but I only wear them for personal satisfaction. Sometimes when people pay me compliments I can’t even smell the perfume myself. I wouldn’t deliberately choose a beast mode perfume and I think if it is overpowering for me I am unlikely to wear it. I like to enjoy my perfume. I am not sure I always need others to smell it, invariably they do. As for a skin scent, if I can smell it, I am happy. I don’t need others to as well. Sometimes the nuances are just as lovely as smelling it everywhere.

Givenchy Pi, Oscar de la Renta pour Lui, CK Obsession/Dark Obsession, Paco Rabanne pour homme and Lancome Poeme are ones I've been wearing most often. Strong enough to be noticed and really nice up close. Love your essay/editorial videos.

@SputnikExperiment
@SputnikExperiment Год назад
@@dr.claire.perfume My experience of wearing Pi is that it's very alluring, sensual and fresh. The sweet base is a soft, powdery sweet vanilla and not a rich Madagascar vanilla. And it's one of those scents that I don't mind if it gets into my clothes and lingers. If you ever get a chance try CK Dark Obsession for men and Armani Eau de Cedre. Dark Obsession is super rare, it would have sold better as a flanker to Pi rather than to Obsession. The Armani a slightly sweet, cypress/cedar black tea fragrance. Another Armani worth smelling is Code EDT for men. In the tall bottle, originally Black Code. The one with the Olive/Olive tree note. So good. It's nothing like the thick and cloying Code Absolu. Black Code is just smooth.

I've never managed to smell any of those. My experience of male marketed fragrances is relatively limited. @katjack2780 Год назад
I would naturally choose a skin scent. I grew up with a kind of "perfume etiquette." You spray into the air and then walk into it. That way you don't get a heavy concentration in one part of your anatomy, which distorts how the perfume is meant to be perceived. People should not smell you coming or, worse, you shouldn't fill a space with your perfume. It's like the height of bad manners, showing no concern for the comfort of others; some people may even be allergic to something in your scent or have breathing problems. It's rather like a demand for attention; imposing yourself on others in a competitive or authoritarian way. Too often I've been the victim of people wearing beast mode perfumes in a confined space. It's even possible that it contributed to my developing a sensitivity to certain scents to the extent of triggering allergic reactions. I can no longer wear perfumes that contain certain scents; i.e., patchouli is a big no-no. I have to check the notes of any perfume I'm thinking of buying and preferably get a sample beforehand. i think you can wear beast mode fragrances but you have to use common sense; judge your space. There's a big difference between being at an outdoor event and going to a crowded club. If people can smell you from 10 feet away, you have too much on.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume Год назад
Yes it's a balance isn't it? I see quite a lot of people on RU-vid say how they don't care and how they will wear what they want and how you shouldn't be afraid to offend people, but in reality that isn't life. You can't be like that for sure in work and why would anyone want to be like that? Just to get attention? I agree, it's unreasonable and bad manner and clearly even dangerous for some people in certain circumstances. You make an important point. Thanks for watching ❤️

I agree with you on Rolling in Love. The dupe I have is a very nice scent, but it's so much stronger than RIL that I can only handle one or two sprays and it doesn't have that subtle, sensual quality that the Kilian does. Loved your take on this video. I don't tend to like very strong fragrances on me, probably because of my sensory issues. I like to get wafts of my own fragrance but I don't like my perfume to be the only thing I can smell (and taste), it just annoys me. Some things I won't even spray on my neck cuz its too near my nose. I have to be in a baddie mood to wear a strong fragrance 😂 As you know I work in a clothes shop. Throughout the day I will smell loads of different perfumes on customers, the perfumes we sell that people test all day (not my style), food that people think is ok to bring in, people with BO (yeah not everyone makes sure they are cleam before they try clothes on). Sometimes I can even smell the glue used in shoe manufacturing and the "vegan leather" ie plastic, and plastic packaging. Sometimes even what people have washed their clothes with I can smell and it overwhelms me! Oh and weed, that's something I can always smell if someone has smoked a joint or has it on them (usually blokes that are being forced to come clothes shopping with their partners). Anyway not sure where that essay came from. Skinscents for me 👍

I also really get that vegan leather / packaging smell around the shoes and accessories sections. It sometimes makes me feel a little I'll actually, it's quite solventy, but actually much more pleasant than a lot of the rest of the smells you've described there! 😝 I bet it's sensory overload sometimes. BO is something I really struggle with, if I smell it on the bus, I just move right away if I can. And yes, I would never, for example, spray a Mancera or montale or Elie Saab le parfum near my face, it would just be unpleasant. Elsewhere on me can be ok with certain montale / Manceras.

I don't ever need my fragrances to fill a room or make it so that I can't enjoy eating food (some scents are so strong one feels like one can taste them). I do like to be able to smell the fragrance I put on for a 5 - 6 hours. Quality sometimes effects expectations too. I don't expect a body spray to last long or cost much. It's what makes reviewing fragrances so hard because your point of view somewhat depends on what you are used to spending on fragrance. Also many people get certain fragrances through PR which means they have less of an expectation with how good or bad they expect them to be for the price. I hope you are having a great weekend 😘

Loved that you did this tag too, Claire! If I wear a loud fragrance out, I wait until it's almost dried down. I don't know, I'm a fairly introverted person so maybe I don't want to be noticed? Softer scents make me feel like I have a superhero suit under my clothes that no-one knows about except me. When I smell another person's fragrance, I like a quick waft of it and then I want it away from me so I can smell my own. Is that selfish?🤔 I wonder if other fragrance wearers feel that way?
@dr.claire.perfume

Hi Christie! I totally get that! Unless you can't get enough of that person in other ways, a quick waft is all you need. You are likely going to enjoy your smell more as you're the one that's chosen it 😉 definitely not selfish 🙂 "like a superhero" is a fab description. It's again a secretive feeling isn't it? I now prefer skin scents so a fragrance like Scandal by night which I would have loved in my 20’s somehow makes me sick 🥴 you hit so many points! Smell is such a touchy subject but always fun! Hi my Cambridgeshire neighbour! I agree with everything you said and, like you, I'd go for a skin scent if I absolutely had to choose one or the other for ever. I definitely wear fragrance for myself and my mood but it is so lovely when someone compliments one's fragrance isn't it. Most of us like something in between skin scent and beast mode most of the time I agree. I feel sorry for people who are sensitive to fragrance and easily get headaches - must be horrible if you're working with people who wear beast mode fragrances.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume Год назад
Yes, I don't think there are many people who want one or the other. And actually, as I get older, and compliments for other things decrease 🤣 I love getting compliments for my fragrance! I do think different cultures approach fragrance very differently and something that might be strong here isn't elsewhere and vice versa and that might be why in an office of people from all around the world, some people are more sensitive than others. I don't think most people would say anything unless it was actually causing them physical difficulty but it's such a difficult conversation to have with someone.

I am actually a cell biologist but I should probably make a video on this at some point. Many long lasting fragrances have ambroxan or other similar derivatives, but don't actually acknowledge it. I think many people find this incredibly frustrating because quite a lot of people are incredibly sensitive to ambroxan and alike. It can give people headaches, make them feel like they are suffocating and just generally put them off wearing particular fragrances.

I guess like you say it shows that fragrance can be very intimate and special not for one to wipe out a football stadium full. I agree it just wouldn't suit being very strong and in your face. Well the tobacco and amber lady may have relented, but the Shalimar lady is still at it, at least it's not sweat. Yes, I think the cinnamon and caramel/general sweetness bit at the beginning is harsh and strong for me and always makes me feel like it is very loud, but actually when I took it to work and smelt it on other people, it was in fact the powdery rose part that projected massively, not that bit 🙃 so yes, I agree, it's sometimes not what you experience most intensely when you are wearing it, but other parts of the fragrance that other people may smell most. Hello!
@ΛΕΜΟΝΙΑΤΑΣΟΥΛΑ
I consider myself an introvert too but I prefer beast mode fragrances. I also like wearing high heels every day but I have noticed that over the years even fragrances that are considered strong don't project that much on me and I've been wondering why since I don't have dry skin. Maybe it has to do with growing older. Do you think that hormones may influence the projection of a fragrance?
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume Год назад
Yes, I have also felt that. I wasn't sure whether it was just reformulations with me, but Alien seems much less nuclear than it used to on me, maybe I just got used to the smell of it? I have noticed that spraying a mist on clothing as well as skin seems to make them project much more, but that's not always practical. I also don't have dry skin so hormonal changes could be a thing affecting how much you smell them perhaps? Or even just other non hormonal related changes in your sense of smell as you get older? I'm not sure! 🥰

I really liked how you compared a skin scent to reading a book in public with cover hidden. 👌🏼 What an amazing analysis and breakdown of Al the factors that go into a fragrance being a skin scent or a loud scent! Love your use of GIFs too 😂🥰 We need to know what fragrance it was that gave everyone a headache in the office?! Do you know what it was? I do find skin scents sexy. And I do think loud fragrances can be too much in small cramped spaces. I worry sometimes that with wearing so much fragrance, we go anosmic to a lot of the notes and general strength of the fragrance and walk around thinking we smell great but really it’s overpowering. 🫠 If I had to pick one type of fragrance for the rest of my life it would probably be closer to a skin scent tbh. I want to be able to smell myself, but I also don’t want to feel suffocated or like all I can smell is what I’m wearing for hours and hours (sometimes I do, but not every day). I want to get wafts of my scent all day. Excellent video, as always, Claire!

It honestly smelt beautiful and I could always smell her before I ever saw her and I could know she was in the building by just getting in the lift 🤣 I think I have the same worries with strong fragrances.
