In 1987, The Beasties didthe JOAN RIVERS SHOW. and were so cocky and confident that they were black balled from tv for a few years other than videos. Letterman was a fan of them and had them back a few times, the one where they start 5 blocks away and run down the sidewalk rapping their way into the studio is a great television moment.
I followed them around Texas in the early nineties with tribe called quest and public enemy. It was awesome. If you haven't already watched the documentary called something like Beastie boys greatest of all time. It's here on RU-vid.
As far as I know, they have had 4 #1 albums. License to Ill, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, and To the 5 Boroughs. I'm and old fart but as a result I have be able to see them live 4 times... absolutely fantastic.
the difference between, run dmc and aerosmith, was on is a publicity stunt. Beastie Boys are like, im from NY i listened to hip hop and punk rock growing up heres my music lol
I've never heard anyone say Licensed to Ill as being one of the best hip hop albums ever, but I absolutely agree. It's a legit classic. The fact that they play their own instruments is amazing, because its something they always got flak for in the past.
David Letterman said that the biggest thing he will miss is the music on his show. I can only imagine how many great artists made their way through there.
I remember when this aired, i knew they were gonna be on Letterman that night and set up the VCR, thought i was ready until i watched it and realized i wasn't ready for what i just watched!!
Oh man... if you dig the hip hop-rock reeses cup, check out Anthrax and Public Enemy's Bring the Noise as well as the entire sound track to Judgment Night.
2 years before the RunDMC Aerosmith collab, Run DmC and the Beasties were fusing classic rock riffs and rap. The best screamers were Steven Tyler, Jim Morrison, Bob Seger, and Joe Cocker. AdRock is very close though. He is the member with the most attitude in his voice.
He was the leader of the band the "Young and the Useless" until he melded with the Beastie Boys in 1979 (Kate Shellanbach, John Barry, Adam Yauch and Mike Diamond)
You should react to the band that opened shows for the Beastie Boys during the "Paul's boutique" tour. That band was called Urban Dance squad. And they predated Rage against the machine, in fusing Hip-hop with hard edged rock and even having a DeeJay onstage. It was having the UDS opening shows for them which inspired the Beastie Boys to start playing instruments again, abandoning the pure Hip hop format. The result was their third album "Check yo head" where the band thanked the UDS for the shot in the arm. The UDS, returned the compliment in the song you should react to, "Demagogue". As I pointed out, they had been around BEFORE Rage against the machine and both bands are always compared to each other. But there's no bad blood between them, in fact, there's a rather famous performance of the UDS at the Pinkpop festival where Zach DeLa Rocha and Tom Morello are seen watching from the side and having a great time.
Rick Rubin was their first DJ. He later co founded Def Jam, and produced with all the greats, of many genres. Arrowsmith, Slayer, Jay Z, Eminem, Johnny Cash and many more an endless list.
