Because he could keep the aggro far away with summon. Really not that hard. Running from the first flurry is always the best way, after that its simply pattern that you dont necesarily need to dodge for.

Tbf, vow of the indomitable basically saves you first 2 combo of the waterfowl dance, you only have to role out of the third and kept your distance for the fourth. So yes sometimes switching to your shield is faster than reloading.
Two hilarious moments to me: 1. Malenia performed Waterfowl _twice_ in phase one out of sheer panic of losing to this mess of a build 2. the way you popped off a greatbow at 5:03 solely to fulfill the "all spells" condition and never used it again lol
She did it 3 times on first phase one time i was playing. Most times i fought her she did it more than once. You just gotta have any build that isn't extremely OP like most players.
If you stop it could be a challenge no one will ever do ever think Dark Souls PTDE Barefist Damage Only (No Dragon Form for Killing Bosses) How Many Bosses can be beaten? You'll never see a sane person attempting it.
The two shields is the one that gets me. Like every other thing is just noob mistakes, but the two shields are mentally deranged. Its not even a parry shield paired with a regular, they are both just medium shields.
I mean. There are highly specific times where two shields like this might be useful. Say, you have a 100% physical shield, but also want a shield for the projectile of a boss which is, say, Lightning, and you don't have any shields that are good in both stats, so you intend to switch off to the lightning shield for that specific attack. Or, maybe you have a shield you actually use, and then your Stamina regen shield you two hand with. However, these are extraordinarily niche use cases, and are usually adaptations to having to work with limited gear. Definitely not a core part of a basically functional, idealized build
Like… I kinda get it? In the sense of the bronze shield being 100% against physical and I think having higher stability, and the other one being good against non-physical damage. But wtf just swap in your inventory, what situation would you be in where you would need to access both so quickly that you couldn’t swap in the menu. Goddamn psychopath
@@Chadius_ThundercockPlenty wrong using a summon against Malenia. She heals on every connect. Summons are generally speaking a detriment against her except during the first phase.
@@Chadius_Thundercock The way they used the term crutch doesnt really match what you think of. In the vid he called fat rolling a crutch and i think he just means it drags you down. Against Melania Summons sabotage you.
@@Chadius_ThundercockCompletely agree. I think summons are the default way to play the game (solo), and not using them is a deliberate choice to make combat more difficult (broadly speaking).

@@SaxSlaveGaelhonestly i think “veterans” forget that fat rolling isn’t that bad outside of pvp. that’s why noobs do it, because they can get away with it, so why not?
@@mkv2718 i dont fat roll. but im tired of people saying even mid roll is bad. as someone who has played and completed all 3 dark souls and elden ring with mid roll builds.
@@malking1486 not really. if anything ds1 is the least dependent roll souls game. hell, you dont even need to roll at all after you get some of the buffier armor sets. i mean, one of the strategies in speedrun is to literaly stand still and just mash attack to kill the 4 kings. then there are bosses that are soloed by summoned npcs. like the iron golem or the butterfly. other bosses like gwin you can just bait attacks and parry, or seath you can just run around and stab him, if you have enough curse resist. so it doesnt really matter how slow the roll in ds1 is, the game is the easiest of the entire franchise.
I played with more than one Summon equipped to be prepared for each scenario when exploring, at least that was my logic in my first playthrough. I also have no idea which summons are good and which are bad so I always had them prepared and tested them
Yeah, having 3 summons in the inventory is one of the least egregious part of this build. I have 3 summons that I like and I have them equipped too. Maybe you take them out for an intense boss fight like Malenia. But when exploring and you have no idea what kind of fight you're getting, keeping multiple in your loadout is pretty convenient.
@@Panda-sn5or yeah i personally have like a few summons that i really like even though im well aware its not that useful though less gameplay oriented and more so just being able to summon ones i think are cool

Did anyone catch that crazy part where he’s memorized the boss so well, he dodged the first attack and then immediately blocked the second attack he didn’t have enough time to roll through??
@@occultnightingale1106 Yeah it took me around ten attempts or so to learn how to dodge waterfowl, sometimes I even got it perfect. But doing it while fat rolling is impressive. The thing I struggled most with was her fast successive attack combo where she spins and lunges (not the one with the straight dash with the sword), and the one in phase 2 where she summons clones that dive at you. Figured out you can dodge most of the clones simply by running lol.
2:23 having flasks on the pouch saves me so much time instead of having to cycle through items. It's a little finicky at first, but feels very seamless once learned. I can understand not preferring pouch flasks, but I would not call it impractical.
I took a leap of faith and switched to red flask on pouch and I've never gone back. Having a button (combo) which always heals frees me up to use consumables
I switched from having heal flasks on the quick pouch to simply having them as the first option in the equipment slot and focus flask as the second slot. Using the "return to first slot" shortcut input feels way faster and more reliable to me than having to first "summon" the pouch menu, during which you cannot use the functions buttons for normal actions.

@@Honed- I didn't look up a guide and figured out how the UI worked, it almost looks like he asked an AI what build to make and just slapped everything that was listed in the equipment without trying to figure out how to infuse or quickly access things... He only has five memory slots. You start with two. One is dropped before Rennala. One is bought from the twin maiden husk. There is a damn good chance he only found one.
Every time I see a perfect Waterfowl dodge, I feel so satisfied. Surprisingly, little use of a shield (not that fingerprint nonsense, just an old fashioned brass shield to meet the first movement) even spices it up. Really, such an excellent job. Thank you, ir was a pleasure to watch.
The best thing about the Souls games is that it doesn't matter how terrible your build is, if you're good enough at the game you can get through the entire thing without getting hit. They're very fair overall (some exceptions apply).

The jump he made thru the first attack in Malenia's second phase was truly incredible. He soared like a bird that just gained its wings. Miraculous. Had to watch it 10 times.
The double shield is definitely odd, but ppl are hating on this build for no real reason than to inflate their own paltry ego. That being said, his build is indicative of someone who isn’t a souls veteran which is 100% okay. You know if you apply the saying “if it’s stupid but it works then it’s not stupid” you’ve actually redeemed Elon’s gamer cred here by proving his build is perfectly viable
Yeah he honestly made this look fun and interesting. It was way better than seeing another video of some naked person who wishes they were 'Let Me Solo Her'.
The mention of lighter load, at least to me, implies he was using the Winged Crystal Tear if he couldn't fatroll things mid fight. Given the magic setup of the... "build"..., the other was probably Cerulean or Magic Shrouding. He was also using pre-multiple nerf Moonveil so he was probably crutching super hard on that.
I like how the build itself isn't bad, it's just that it doesn't live to its full potential. Making it a medium load by switching the Radahn armor could help, and adding parries to the shields could work. Overall, play however you want, but it seems a bit goofy to self-nerf.
Agreed. Ppl are hating on this build for no real reason than to inflate their own paltry ego. Med roll with one parry shield and no one would blink an eye at this build. Didn't know having flasks in quick pouch was a stupid move. I prefer it to the quick inventory because I don't have to cycle through everything else I have in there, but everything in the pouch is max two button presses away.
This build really isn't that bad, considering low vigor and fat roll is offset by the shields and summons. High int scaling weapon/staff with a strong AoW poise breaker on the rapier pairs for a number of decent tactics against various bosses. Not amazing for Malenia, but I think everyone is severely underestimating the damage potential. Ive seen worse builds for sure
The fact the build has rogiers rapiers gb phalanx is probably the most based part even if it was probably unintentional and he had no clue how op that AoW is.
The build isn't that bad. Especially if you presume that it's everything that gets used, and stuff might be removed if it's useless when fighting bosses. Especially if you're not terminally on the wiki so don't have an incredible understanding of the mechanics. Two shields is the weirdest part, but the load isn't going down by removing it, you're never gonna fumble with them really, so it's likely just to remove the necessity of opening the inventory to swap.
Ive never seen malenia do her waterfowl dance right after doing one already. Really showed how desperate she was to not lose to Elons trash ass build (4:35)
The way he has double shields is so odd... like if one shield was upgraded and left standard to have a high Guard Boost stat and the other was infused with an Ash of War/Whetblade to have a higher damage reduction that would make sense to me. It also doesn't help that Malenia is just a miserable fight for shield-focused builds with the healing/status effect combo she has going on
lol. I actually have all my flasks on my quick pouch rather than the item list. I think its faster than cycling through your items, unless you have basically nothing in your item list.
Two shields and two swords with a staff is genuinely baffling, I cannot for the life of me figure out how he thought it was worth fat rolling to have 3 completely unnecessary weapons
