Any A cappella group should use this as the gold standard. What sets them apart, is not only the beautiful unique sound that is distinctively Beatles , but that they wrote their own music. Yes it is , It’s true, No one can touch the Beatles.

Without question one of their finest and yet most underrated songs, probably their best B side ever. Still gives me the goosebumps in a most wonderful way😎👍 PS 3 years later after posting this I realise now with the advance of AI and what’s been achieved with Now And Then, Yes It vocals just with Giles Martins strings and.. Because harmonies added it could be absolutely incredible. Another candidate for the second Love album if it ever was created….😎👌

To me it's George's voice on the word 'planned' that takes this song into another dimension. With a thicker Liverpudlian accent than Lennon it sounds as if he is a ghost from the past haunting the lead singer in the present.

This is the best Beatles harmony and it's interesting they give the hardest part to the weakest singer (at the time). George's part is really tricky but adds such a mysterious quality to the song

Sam Stevens I agree. Of the 4, George was the weakest singer, yet he had an uncanny ability to sing in harmony. Paul’s voice was much stronger and high and clear, so it was natural between them to do the higher and lower part. Through the Beatles career I’ve noticed that George’s vocal part is always the hardest to sing, not because it was high notes like Paul’s, but because to sing the lower or middle part without going out of tune is a very difficult thing to do. George’s musical ear was fanstastic.

@@BassicVIC I think George Martin takes a lot of credit for that too. John and Paul became so adept at harmonizing with each other it became second nature and that meant to get a third harmony part George would have to go to some unusual places. Sounds awesome. This Boy is another great example.

This is a perfect example of the old expression, you can't please everybody. I saw one thumbs down, so there you go. There's one in every crowd, it's the law of averages. Having said that, this is one of my all-time favorite Beatles vocal efforts. Beautiful!

@@fifthbeatle Yeah This Boy is a classic. Great song, beautiful Beatles harmonies. Lennon himself said that when he was writing Yes it is he was attempting to write another This Boy but it didn't work. And they are similar in tempo and structure with the 3 part harmonies, then the Lennon lead vocal portion, (Oh and this boy) and in Yes it is (I could be happy) then back to the harmonies. Lennon is quoted as saying he hated the song, but I'm sure glad he wrote it because it's always been one of my favorites

Im guessing that George Martin did the vocal arrangment for this. The lads did an amazing job pulling this off. Remember, this was all done long before autotune was invented. This is scary good.

I read somewhere, God knows where, Martin said the Beatles always worked out their own harmonies. And their results consistently astonished him. This song, for example, has some pretty daring, tight lines, bordering on dissonance. Yet they pull it off perfectly.

Too simple to be true, actually. George starts off on the low E and then moves up higher than John. He does that on a few lines. Paul is the only one who maintains the high register throughout.

@@magneto7930 Yep, George's harmony in this is really complex. He starts the verse lines low, slides up past John and then goes towards the middle as John goes down. Possibly the hardest harmony part in their whole catalogue.

Chris Campbell Yes it was double tracked ... I should say over dubbed (John singing another take on top of another). John wasn’t very exact when overdubbing his own voice, unlike Paul’s he is absolutely perfect on that. But on this one John is clearly making a conscious effort to be super precise. And he does it brilliantly!

@@BassicVIC He used to overdub his vocal track and say a different thing or sing in a different way, check Slow Down He in his original Vocal Track sings: "But now you got a boyfriend down the street" and he was supposed to sing his overdubbed Vocal Track the same line but in his overdubbed Vocal Track sings: "But now you don't care a dime for me" this last line was used to Radio/BBC Presentation and Live Concerts meanwhile the original line was the correct one to sing

Fun fact: automatic double tracking was invented by Ken Townsend at Abbey Road because John hated having to constantly double-track his vocals.
