Honestly I have watched so many videos on dj basics and I swear yours is the clearest and the most precise and easiest to understand. Keep it up! More please!
Hi guys, I've been extremely busy with different projects, gigs and private life and as a result I was not able to make new video's in the last two weeks. I'm back in the lab right now and the new video's are dropping asap! Thanks for the support and patience. TLM
Steffhan Philbert 99% of the time it will be a macbook pro for the pro dj or professional studio use. look up youtube vids on professionals mixing/djing and its pretty much the only standard.
Steffhan Philbert What kind of software/hardware (audio interface) will you be using? Once you know that you can check for the minimum specification that are required to be able to run that software. Are you just mixing or will you be recording as well?
I write rap so this is important thing for me to learn to count bars but I just wanna say this is the only video on RU-vid that actually makes you understand and learn how to count bars ! thanks man !
I have always followed music simply by feel (if you know what I'm saying), you just cleared up the technical and the theory that I have never quite understood. Great video!!!!
Man, great videos. I have a lot of hobbies and run a few business and I decided to learn DJ'ing as well to mix it up a little. Your videos are answering most (maybe all... only watched about 6 so far) of my questions. Anyway, glad I found your channel. Keep it up!
Hi guys, Due to health issues I couldn't finish video's I was working on (NS7-2 review) and I can't record new video's either. I lost my voice over the weekend and that makes it a bit difficult to record stuff ;) I should be fine in a couple of days so stay tuned! For the DJ's who would like to be part of the Saturday Super Session: Join the Saturday Super Session and send me your own video!
I'm currently taking a Jazz History class in college and your video helped me a lot with counting the time signature. I have even taken the liberty to share your video with my professor and he shared it with the entire class..........Thank You so much for your tutorial!!!! VERY HELPFUL!!!!!!
What beat sounds like? The beat I only know is snare cause its understandable that its a beat ,I'm a 13 year old that wanna learn hiphop hard as hell so I can compete in the game
As a HS Music theory teacher I LOVE this. I have lots of kids who are into mixing and DJing but struggle to buy into why these things are important to them too. Thanks for this!
I was the same way. I still am. I wanted to naturally feel it using another sense. I spent my whole life practicing that. When it came to beginning to produce songs that is where I couldn't really run away from it. There is good either way just depends what direction the heart and soul are trying to go
Counting beats came easily to me from the start, didn't even realize what i was doing until later on. But few songs with a irregular starts on the intro gives me a hard time to catch a good cue point for a proper mix. I usually find and remember a safe spot before the verse to start from but won't get the mix i would like. Your video open my eyes to a lot..... I want to start learning music & try new methods in djing so i'm going to try start counting bars.... Thanks for all your hard work with these videos. Keep it up!
I was simply looking for a definition of bars and I stumbled upon your video. You gave me exactly what I needed plus more, all in a concise and clear manner. Thanks!
This Video is very important for me to understand the structure of Dance Music... ! Thank you again for sharing your knowledge, DJ TLM !!! 👌🎶❤🎶 Plzz keep it up... ! (shared on FB & tweeted promptly already some weeks ago) ☺
That was a fantastic video! I'm a retired DJ and often times I help new DJ's get started. Whenever I start with someone, I always start with this. Before you put your hands on a controller or open DJ software (it's irrelevant) you gotta know this. Most people don't realize they already know this subconsciously and practice it when they''re dancing singing. Once. you understand it it will open up an entire new world of music for you. You will go to a club or concert and appreciate what the artists are doing on an entire new level. Bravo for this simple tutorial!
I'm not a DJ, but I am a dancer looking for videos on how to count music for my students. I must say, this video is very straight on and easy to understand. I appreciate the fact that you explain in words as well as playing the audio. And...I've never commented on any videos before. This is great. Thanks so much.
This is the first video of yours that I've watched and you have a new follower. You sound passionate and educated about counting music...You've made it easy to understand without making it boring.
stop counting and start FEEL the music I say...becuz u would just know where it goes well if you guys stop thinking the music and start feel it! That's what I do its like beats goes through my heart and that can never fail..thanks for the video tho
That might work for you, but for most people it is essential that they understand the basics like time signature and that they know how to count music. Knowing how to recognize and count beats, bars and phrases will help them to see/hear how music is structured. Once they have that knowledge on lock, they can stop thinking and start feeling. But most importantly, this video was made for (beginning) DJ's. These DJ's will be mixing music with a certain time signature (mostly 4/4) and it is essential to be able to recognize the structure of those songs. When I'm mixing I don't count. Once you have the knowledge you recognize the beats, bars and phrases without counting.
yeah i respect that! Good there is a way for everyone, just never ever thought about music as counting it just goes of it self without thinking for me but yeah, it's intressting to know these things, but it was like a :O moment becus all of the sudden music became a math lesson :D ..joke, ok but thanks I appreciate the answer
MAIA MUSIC Singer Songwriter Just because you can feel music, doesn't mean that you should'nt understand "whats under the hood". I'm impressed to see someone teaching "music" as a basis at all (Beats / bars). Too many people try to run before they know how to walk. Learning how to break music down in to its component parts can help a lot.
what ever works for you, im glad for you if you have found a way that works for you to make music :) all good, but i dont need to see under the hood to know what i wanna do but it's just me, because when ever i start to count and over think my music it just gets 'bad' becuz then i focus too much on the details,,, i think music dont need to be abour perfection and that's just my opinion, when i feel its good its good :) BUT i respect your ways of creating I just see it differently
I've never learned how to read music but, I've always had an ear for it. If you have no rhythm it's always going to be a difficult. Music paints a picture or even a story. Counting is so important. I learned at the age of 7 how to count learning ballroom dancing which embedded the rhythm in me.
Hey man im new to using maschine and im new to producing, i love boom bap hip hop and i wanted to ask a few questions about some things on maschine if anybody can asnswer them i would really appreciate it, thanks
Dude , thank you! I only watched this video once and I feel like I absorbed everything you explained ! Thank you for simplifying it , I can't wait to go mix now !
haha dude i've been making music on and off for 7 years and you just blew my mind with the most fundamental stuff. i really should've paid attention in music class
I'm glad I took percussion through middle school and high school. It really helped me picking up mixing earlier. Never underestimate the power of band class.
Okay, so you know that super simple beat pattern used in Mary J. Blige's song "All Night Long" (the one using the Mary Jane Girls sample)? Well, I tried to make a similar beat pattern like that and I couldn't believe how hard it was for me... I couldn't get the timing right or find the rhythm to save my LIFE. I tried to makeup for it by adjusting the tempo enough to make it SOUND like I was on point, but every time I did that I couldn't get a clean loop. I knew this was all due to my lack of understanding in time signature/counting beats, but I was determined to find a way without learning all that mess (ikr... LOL, at my stupidity). I actually gave up trying until I find your video... THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! I went back and tried it again for the first time in MONTHS, and I made my pattern PERFECTLY within a matter of minutes:-). #YouHaveSavedMyLife!!!
I am watching tutorials about DJ-ing for about two months now... you are the first one that explains in a very easy to understand manner. Thank you! P.S. Then I saw the other comments:)
Dude I just watched idk how many tutorial videos and they all SAY you need to know how to count music, but NONE of them explained it as easily and as well as you just did. THANK YOU! It finally all makes sense now its like a light just went off in my head!
So, I watched this “tutorial” approximately 50x’s along with about 100 others and think I may finally be able to call myself a DJ ;) I just wanted to say thank you to you first of all for posting this video because it really helped me a lot and please let me know what you think about my mix and transitions. I would really appreciate it, thx!!
Is it to late to say thanks for a great, easy to follow but super helpful video? Pandemic has all types of hobbies being practiced and you just answered my biggest and most challenging issue. I understand what counting beats was, but I couldn’t find the basic answer to the question “what should I be listening for the bass, kick, snare and how do I know how many beats are in a bar”. Thanks sir.
So if you have 2 different beats with the snare drum on 2 and 4 and your mixing into your next track. Do you stop track 1 on 1 start the next track on 1 OR stop track 1 on 2 or 4 and start the next track on 2 or 4?
Hey DJ TLM! Still following your videos among any dj tutorials :) I'd just like to ask what are the tutorials in order should a beginner learn after how to count music because I don't have a real turntable/mixer yet, only a virtual app?
What an awesome video!!! I just discovered your tutorials, and they are amazing. I love it that they are so fluid, and appear to be done in one take. Thank you!
You’re my very favorite of all the different DJing “how-to channels.” I couldn’t figure out where you were from and was surprised that you’re Dutch! I thought you were a Cuban guy living in Miami! Either way, you’re a great teacher.
Did a verse for a younger dude and he was telling me to hit the up beat and not the down beat and even though i wrecked it like always, i realized i have been rapping for 3 years and I dont know anything about music at all. so thanks for the first lesson lol.
Broo🙏 You were a genius when this video came out. Now you're a life savior, and this vid will help many more generations. Keep up good work Sir!! Thank you
Well, you can find contact info for most labels online, but I highly doubt that they will make a clean version or instrumental for you. If the clean version and / or instrumental already exist, you should be able to find them in online stores
okay. so a bar is 4 beats. fair fair but why is it that in most mainstream top 40 music changes or guess the phrase repeats after an 8 count? i guess this would be considered two bars or 8 beats... seems like 99% of music i hear is on an 8 count
+Jonny Van Most music doesn't have a phrase change after 8 counts (2 bars). Most (popular) music like edm, hip hop, etc. has a phrase change after 4 or 8 bars so 16 or 32 beats
