A24 = original stories. Not remakes, sequels or recycled stories. They are bold. Even on their worst day I much rather watch one of their authentic new stories fail than to rehear/watch an altered recycled original. They are a fresh breath of air to cinema.
@@theunsmartasian1087 Those are 2 films out of dozens and counting and both are based on stories literally hundreds of years old. Your username is very accurate keep up the good work.
This is a perfect example of how you do a trailer. You’re not getting a synopsis or plot of the the entire movie, but it perfectly gives you a setting and a vibe. Such a good trailer!
Ari Aster and Joaquin Phoenix sounded like a match made in heaven when Beau Is Afraid was first announced, now this looks like it will be one of the most bizarre, introspective, and comedically terrifying films in recent years and I couldn't be happier to welcome it with open arms.
Don't you find it weird to use such words to describe a film that isn't even out yet, based purely on it's trailer? Seems like I'm reading a review of a film that's already out, written by someone who's chronically on Letterboxd.
This tells quite a bit actually. I think anyone who's seen The Truman Show already knows a decent amount of the plot with this. With that said, clearly there is more too it, but the similarities were all given away in this 'trailer'. Given the length of the trailer it would appear the "Truman Show" style surprise for the main character takes up a decent portion of the run time. Who knows. Could be wrong but this trailer could be half as long as still be good.
I saw Beau is afraid yesterday, honestly I don't regret the 3 hours I spent watching this, one thing is certain whether like it or not, you will never forget this movie.
It's somewhat fascinating how your comment (Melissa) provides an intelligently balanced take... only to be followed by two radical takes from both sides of the coin. Honestly, Melissa, I wish more people were like you and could express their opinion truthfully without blatantly insulting the opposite thing.
Same here. And while there are a lot of foreign films that are a lot weirder than this looks to be, I am so happy that A24 is encouraging American filmmakers to be as weird as they want and pushing artfull, unique filmmaking into the mainstream
A24 is easily in the top 3 production companies right now. Even their work that isn't as popularly recognized is all of a really high standard and most have their own cult followings. I always get a feeling like I'm in a fever dream watching A24 movies and it's rare that production companies can achieve that effect where you are enveloped in the story time after time 🙏
I don't think they have a problem giving freedom. It's all about the money and profit these kinds of movies don't make since people are so conditioned to mainstream recycled ideas and sequels. But kudos to A24 ,they got Ari Aster's back and he continues to deliver new experiences for us.
@@brimstonesulfur5013 It's a different kind of plot but based on the same character, he wrote a full-length screenplay centered around him called Beau Is Afraid in 2014 and this is the adaptation of that. Screenplay's been floating around online for a while, it looks like they changed a LOT but I still recognize some key scenes. Based on this trailer, he's definitely taken some of it in a very different direction though, so I have no idea what to expect. Looks more uplifting than the script, but that may just be trailer editing.
This could be a new example of “psychological horror “ we need more filmmakers like Ari , we need people that push the limits of a preexisting art to something new ❤
@@narrance it looks like something that don’t pretend to scare the audience with stupid jumpscares or gore stuff, it’s a movie about Fear but not a “scary movie “ and the comic side balance it … in my opinion it looks like a polished, elegant version of Raimi’s Evil dead in terms of contrasting feelings 🤔
A24 is a low budget studio. They pick up scripts and directors that typically won’t get funded by major production companies(ie. Avant garde movie ideas) in an attempt to hopefully turn a massive profit on a movie that deviates from the mainstream(marvel, Disney bs). It’s a [potentially] higher risk for a higher reward scenario. It has nothing to do with ari aster getting popular, but A24 giving aspiring directors a chance from the beginning. Think blumhouse(another low budget production company) and their massive success and profits on the first paranormal activity. Most big budget companies wouldn’t have funded a venture such as PA, but look at the reward, almost 200 million pure profit.
@@jerkchickenblog Depends on what you mean by weird. Hereditary and Midsommar were great, but they were sold as horror films and were exactly that. I've got no idea what this is going to be. Obviously still going to see it though.
I came into the movie theater blind. I did not know what to expect with Ari Aster's new movie, but it's that level of uncertainty that drew me in even more. I left the theater in awe and somewhat gut-punched. I had to see this movie again! Already can't wait to get it to own on 4K blu ray!!!
Wait... you said you came into the theater blind. So, I have some questions... Later, you said you can't wait to see this movie again, and that you left the theater gut-punched. First of all, that's miraculous! This movie actually helped you to see again! We've got to get the word out. But as far as someone assaulting you in the theater... This is outrageous! Who would punch a blind person in a theater!?? Is that something blind people have to deal with regularly?? That's horrible! I mean here you are, (listening very intently to the movie), and probably running back and forth very quickly at the bottom of the screen reading the braille at the bottom, and someone comes along and sucker punches you? Is it because you also got popcorn and were maybe smearing butter across the screen? If so... how did you carry the bucket of popcorn with one hand and read braille with the other, and still have time to reach into the bucket to get some more popcorn? You must have missed a lot of the movie. Actually...If the movie had audio, why did you need to read the braille at the bottom? Is that because you were afraid you might miss something the actors said? Oh wait... I get it now. You must have bumped into another person who was blind as well when you were both going back and forth, and THEY gut punched you. I dunno... maybe I'm just blind, but I don't see it.
Ari is trying to hard to be wacky and quirky and has made a incoherent surreal mess. Wes anderson wannabe. I have seen this type of movie a lot in the last ten years sir so, and i can’t believe Ari has stooped to making an inferior copy of movies that came before in this style. What a mess of a film. infuriating watch. Never again. He should stick to his brand of horror. he’s awful at this
@@paulwoodford1984just finished… I’m not sure if I’m mad or not lol I truly think Hereditary is masterful horror but this just seemed overindulgent without much payoff
Thanks Ari Aster for keeping the art of cinema alive and thanks Joaquin Phoenix for sculpting these characters with your unique talent. All the waiting has been worth it, this movie looks mind blowing.
Aces + Facts,. 👏👏💯👏 Thus Far my Favourite Phoenix Films are the Master, Two Lovers, and You Were Never Really Here.. ...with Inherent Vice taking Honorable Mention..
Ever since I first saw him in Gladiator back in the day I knew the dude had a big future ahead of him. The guy really goes above an beyond for his role an does not feel like he's the 'same' person in every film that he's in.
I think on top of being a fantastic actor, he also just has REALLY good taste in film. He works on so many movies and the vast majority of them are also just fantastic artworks by themselves.
There are a lot of controversial opinions about this movie. It’s more metaphorical, it represents how to live with anxiety, basically a nightmare of a person with severe anxiety in absurd, black comedic portrayal. It’s also about relationships in your life and their importance ( parents, partners etc) and how parents can control you even as an adult, how they planted deep fears into us only to be hindered from reaching our full potential and joy. What it’s like not finding your place in society and feeling like an outcast, not fitting anywhere, but even if you have a chance to live a happy life and find your people, your inner fears, your traumas will come get you and draw you back to the source of every bad thing in your life, mind until you can’t escape and there’s no where to go. It’s about traumas, fears, anxiety and how they can decrease someone’s quality of life, determine their present and future and how you can be the prisoner of your own mind due to them.
Really grateful for all movies released by A24 and the support they give to innovative, talented directors with original ideas. It is refreshing to see that in the industry.
Agreed A24 is the first production company I actually bothered to remember. I trust their taste and I'll watch anything they put out. So far the only dud, imo, was Green Knight, and that's just a dud on the A24 scale, meaning it was still pretty decent. And plot aside, had amazing cinematography.
This is what I want to see above all else when it comes to movies. Something from a filmmaker who has a vision and wants to slap me across the face with it. Repeatedly.

The fact that you think what you saw is funny and I am having flashbacks of dreams that only Freud and my therapist might understand only proves Ari Aster's brilliance.

@Jason Delvaux This movie puts the psychological in psychological horror. Like I genuinely think it's the poster child of what that genre is about (which is often mislabeled or misunderstood)
I can't tell if I'm gonna find this movie to be more terrifying, or hysterical... and that has me so excited. Ari sure is talented filmmaker. I'm glad he's switching up his style. Almost feels like this film was made for Joaquin, it's his style of weird/funny/tragic.

It really warms my heart to see A24 carve out their little niche and find so much success. This is what I loved about movies. It doesn't have to be one or the other. I want to watch big, dumb superhero popcorn flicks AND be blown away by stuff like this.
Perfectly said. I want to have fun watching the big blockbusters like Top Gun or The Avengers, and still be moved or provoked by watching something like this, Hereditary, or EEAAO
@@vincenthalfprice9930 More like Top Gun & Banshees of Inisherin. EEAAO was not thought provoking. I haven’t spent one second thinking about that movie since it ended.
I had the pleasure of working with Joaquin as an actor in Hollywood before he was famous, and he hasn' t changed a bit. He's still the same shy, modest kid he always was. And hugely talented. A million best wishes, Joaquin..
This movie is a great example of “art disturbs the comfortable and comforts the disturbed”. If you’re a person with anxiety and/or enjoy dark depressing humor, you’ll probably enjoy this fever dream of a journey.
I was howling laughing through most of this film. My wife was sat with mouth agape. Every now and then I looked over to check in, chuckle, and give her a reassuring pat on the leg because I had nothing to say. If Joaquin doesn't get the Oscar for this, then the Oscars are pointless.
I love A24 movies. They're pure artistic expression. Thank The All for the boldness of Ari Aster. The All delivers and Ari goes to work. He don't give a crap what anybody thinks about his stories.
Just sad knowing what will happen to them when they start making more money. WB used to be the A24 of the 70's, look what they've become now. That's Hollywood for ya

I saw film screening Beau is afraid in IMAX in Manhattan Ari Aster was interviewed by Martin Scorsese after the screening. I will let you know that if you’re battling codependency, this is a great movie for you to see. The main character of Beau battles a lifetime of codependency brought on by his mother, not allowing him to have autonomy in his formative years. He goes on to question all his decisions and abdicate his decision, making to others rendering him as someone who is lost in chaos, castrated by his mothers inability to allow him to choose. he ends up becoming a hypochondriac, unable to feel safe in making choices for himself. Even after his mothers, death beau still continues to drown in his own guilt brought on by his mothers constant reminders that he did not love her enough the way she needed to be loved. This movie drives the point home that for codependent person to learn to be independent, They must take the control of their decisions, cut the chains that bind them to their past and choose life decisions for themselves or die along with their codependent counterpart
the movie wasn't so simple. Beau was a victim of his smothering and jealous mother but he was also so unresponsive. He had to learn to act out what he wants or at least explain himself better. He was guilty of what he was judged for even though the judgement ignored the defense of his position... I guess saying that in the end it doesn't matter if others 'made' you the way you are. You have to seek the solution yourself. His psychiatrist didn't help. Nobody helped... not even Beau.
I really really want to sound serious with this question but the context of the scene completely nullifies all seriousness, could you please explain your view on the giant p*nis that was supposedly Beau’s dad?? I could put everything together on my own and I truly enjoyed this movie, it became one of my favorites so far! But Im trying to come up with what could that mean…
I have a weird feeling this is going to be a combination of The Truman Show & Misery on steroids. Ari Aster’s first two were nothing short of masterpieces. This will eclipse both. I’m so excited for this movie and I’ve been waiting for this trailer for almost two years now. LFG Beau!
@Scott Alleman it doesn’t at all in my opinion. more like a fever dream. plus i don’t think that ari aster is gonna really give us much through his trailer, we’ll just have to wait and see :)
I love the detail that the trailer begins in a dark way. Almost like Ari Aster telling you "See? I'm the director of Hereditary" But then things turn into some kind of crazy adventure through the mind of a protagonist with certain mental problems.
It's making me immediately get the vibe of a struggle with mental health as one of the overall metaphors. Very excited for this, I love Joaquin in pretty much everything he's in
This looks like a positively gorgeous insane combination of horror humor heart and an utterly bonkers tornado of weirdness. Ari just keeps getting better and better
He who just even attempts great films, is to be given some type of automatic respect. I oft times fear we have achieved our zenith in some of our art forms.
Yes! I finally felt seen after years of struggling with anxiety. To have Ari portray it on the big screen so accurately hyperbolized it’s so brillliant
Hayward is one of the myriad of reasons why people with anxiety actually have anxiety. They don't know how to live in a world where their narcissistic behaviors aren't front and center, everyone else, or kindness be damned.
@ln+3rna1hàbän3r0s nah. A24 are an independent entertainment company based in NYC, so they're currently free from Hollywood's shackles. I have this awful feeling some giant Hollywood company will try and acquire them soon though because they keep throwing out banging films.
@@whiskii oh I see. So people running independent films aren't there to make money and appeal to the masses, right? They're entirely different people with pure motivations?
The biggest thing about Joaquin's movies is that viscerally you feel that each character he plays is simply a true expression or extension of himself. It's a bit sad to me but I thank him in the long run for his thespian talent and the sacrifices he has made for all of us.
After the success of “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once”, I wouldn’t be surprised to see “Beau Is Afraid” reach that summit, especially with Joaquin Phoenix starring in a wacky, self-imploding, & an artistic motion picture masterpiece with Ari Aster to direct

@Milli I think they're in New York, not Hollywood. Probably why they release actual good, unique movies that aren't just remakes and female reboots like Hollywood thinks we want. I'm so glad we have a western publisher that loves the art again and escapes those tropes.
The people that has been following ari's career knows that this tráiler has a lot of references of his earliest works and it makes me so exited bc you can see that this movie is probably one of his most personal works yet.
This is the most insane movie trailer I’ve ever seen, I couldn’t keep up with it for a second and I have no clue what the movie will even be about. I love it.
It's not that crazy... Beau is a character who exaggerates everything in negativity - he is scared of everything and has a lot of imaginary bad things happen. A guy standing in the street will look like a gun crazed criminal to Beau.
This movie is a modern day classic. Ari aster is a genius. As far as creativity I’ve never seen a movie like this before. The scene where Elaine kisses beau an the mothers like “what is this” I never laughed so hard in my life
I think this is gonna be a lot scarier than the trailer is making it out to be... but I also wonder if this film is gonna have a more optimistic ending, or at least not be a straight up horror film
I agree. I think it will have many unsettling elements but the abstract nature of the film will disconnect us from the horror (at least that's how I interpreted the horror in the trailer).
It really shows that if you trust that the audience is smart enough to understand and appreciate weird movies. It pays off. A24 is really a breath of fresh air in cinema

Not exactly sure what this is about, but the trailer here filled me with a sense of existential dread and terror. While it's clearly visually bright and happy in a lot of ways, it's suffocatingly creepy, in an effective way. I got the impression that this is a film about anxiety, and the ever-present threat of terrible things happening if you ever dare take any risk or step outside.
I got that. Overcoming extreme anxiety, depression and threat in a Asters version of Odyssey. This film will blow us away for sure and I am all for it!
It’s not just the fear of bad things happening, it’s those literal fears come to life. If you have existential dread from the trailer, I don’t think you should watch it. It’s extremely intense and hard to watch. It’s if everything you could ever fear to go wrong does. And, while that’s happening, someone is yelling that you suck.
Ive been waiting for this since he talked about the movie years ago, so excited we finally have a trailer and can seen what kind of film it's gonna be. Super interested to see Ari finally break out of the standard horror genre(as standard as his movies are lol) and do something totally new. This totally looks like it breaks all genre conventions. Ugh, and it comes out around my bday :3. So happy.
@@KmiiVC The screenplay was always called Beau is Afraid, but while this film was in still in the works it was referred to as “Disappointment Blvd”, probably to keep the actual premise a secret
Having read an early script for this, I always kind of assumed the hundred-odd-paged fever dream of a script was too...I don't know-just too *much* for a movie. I'm amazed how much of this trailer hints at scenes original written more than half a decade ago, and am *so* excited to see this come to fruition.
This is not an entertainment movie. This is the author's statement on the archetype of the devouring mother. Anyone who cannot get out of their mother's overprotection and get rid of guilt is a must-see.
I need a remixed version of Goodbye Stranger (Supertamp) in my life right now. Since watching this trailer I've been listening to the song on loop. I'm so hyped for this movie. Thank you A24 for reigniting my movie passions! x

Ridiculously underrated movie. I think people don't like to be made to be confused at the movies, but I think this wouldn't work if it werent confusing. You're seeing the movie through the eyes of a character who is just as confused as you are. Honestly love it.
Normally, Joaquin Phoenix chooses good projects and if we regarded the director is the brain behind two of the greatest horror movies of the last years, we can expect a lot, considering horror is possibly the most difficult genre to treat in cinema. So, we can say "yes, we can hope this will be great".
Ari Aster is one of the true genuis filmmakers working in mainstream movies today and Joaquin is at the height of his powers as well. This looks absolutely bonkers and I can’t wait.
this trailer has developed an anticipatiom within me that no other movie trailer has had. it evokes a sense of wonderment and hype, I feel both ready and excited to witness Beau's odyssey. @@MicahMicahelI'm sorry for taking so long to respond and I hopw you get to see my answerm The movie has disappointed me more greatly than I could ever imagine. The journey that I wanted to see, and that I dare say was advertised to me, was barely there, and instead what I got was a 3 hour complaint about how Ari Aster's mommy hurt him and how "she'll be sorry when she realizes". It was essentially an excruiatingly long version of the soap scene from "A Christmas Story". I am almost shocked that somebody gave funding to what is essentially an undying teenaged part of Aster's soul making a 4chan post about how much his life sucks. Not to mention the borderline Oedipal undertones. I desparately wanted to enjoy and appreciate this movie, but when it manifests as such drivel, I can't.
@@tommygarson8592 I'll defend the movie if you don't mind. I think you might watch it again and change your opinion because when anticipation is so strong it can distort your reaction. Some of my favourite music albums are works that I was disappointed with at first... movies too but less so for movies. I think Beau was bad to his mother. His mother might've been weird but he was not fulfilling his side of the deal. I had , well still do have kids, and ids are loving and reward you constantly with joy and love. Beau would've been a disappointing kid. Realistically if a parent has a kid that is so unresponsive, it would feel terrible. he was judged in the end and we're all guilty. It was an absurdist comedic nightmare. Kafkaesque comedy. I was laughing all through it. It was hilarious. My daughter saw it too and she said it was hilarious as well. If you think it was about how his life sucked, you didn't really see the same film. heirs life could've been awesome. The odd sexual problem is so surreal, I'm not sure what to make of it. I saw it as a comedy . My daughter did too. It was a horror comedy... kafkaesque. I loved the scene of his street. It was so funny and fun! I think it matters if you feel sorry for him. I might not have felt sorry for him but actually blamed him. When a person doesn't act, I don't think of them as victims. he was so passive he was morally culpable in my opinion and that was maybe why the movie was kind of a happy experience. If you are feeling sorry for him, it would be absurd. He doesn't deserve my sympathy. I think this was by design. I don' think Ari Aster wants us to feel sorry For Beau. I usually feel sorry for characters but Beau didn't deserve it and that made it funny. It also had a groin and serious tom=ne that was there at the exact same time and that made it ... fun.
