Prosthetics can't replicate the look and feel of lost limbs but they can carry a lot of personality. At TEDxCambridge, Scott Summit shows 3D-printed, individually designed prosthetic legs that are unabashedly artificial and completely personal -- from macho to fabulous.
Scott Summit uses his 20 years of experience as an industrial designer to make artificial limbs that help people take personal control of these intimate objects.

A leg to match your purse - how cool is that!!??!! I thought it was fascinating too how the brain remembered the shape after 8 years and he noticed improvement in his sport. This is amazing work, making the world a more positive place to be. I love it!

This level of caring for life and limb restoring and grace is what defines us as a human race. Than You for your brilliance and innovation.

I'm at a loss, trying to figure out why someone would dislike this. To give someone who's lost a limb, a replacement that fits their personality, their life style, how wonderful and amazing. This 3-d printing tech is amazing.

Brilliant. The engineering that goes into prostheses is really amazing, but it's not enough to look at a person as a series of problems that need to be solved. More sensors and more motors are important, but the style, look and feel are just as essential.

Being a abover the knee amputee for the last 20 yrs I can tell you that the hipe often doesnt live up to the message in this case I would say thats true, as awesome as these covers are (and they are awesome I would love one) a better use of this tech would have been custom printing of the socket for a perfect fit - that would have so much more appeal to the amputee (read comfort and pain relief and better gate and less joint and mussle wear and tear) rather than the external view.

To the people who say that 3D printing isn't important because "all you can make are toys"... Watch this.

Now, lets get the same thought of engineering to get these limbs more functional, and asap -brain controlled. Good to see that things are moving along, some of those legs look incredibly cool.

this is awesome. definitely will look at losing a limb as an opportunity instead of a tragedy now

i thought so, until i looked down at my leg and felt how amazing and perfect it is, and how aweful it would be to loose it. tough i would still want one of those if i lost it.

Seeing people wear their physical abnormalities as a badge of pride is amazing.

All that's left is to make them as functional as natural legs. As soon as that happens, we move from uplifting the injured to improving the healthy. I can't fucking wait.

Umm, people. Stop saying you want to lose a leg. It's extraordinarily irritating to those of us who live with less than four. Hey Scott, Where are you? I think I remember seeing your stuff in the NYTs. I am a BKA and do yoga. Have you ever made a cosmesis with soft material that still has structure?

Very good! I like the dishwasher safe part. But this video is only for leg prosthesis. Now let's work one for the arm and hand.
