Rich Brown! I LEARN something EVERY time I take in one of your videos. I swear most online “bass instruction” videos are just guys demonstrating things in language you’d only understand if you already know it. That’s not teaching! I’m not someone with a lot of time left on my clock anymore, and every one of your lessons I have watched turns on a light in a room that was previously dark to me. I just don’t know how else to say thank you.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your very kind words, Dane. I’m so happy to know that these videos are helping you even in some small way. There are some great teachers here, but there are a lot of channels much more concerned with their own egos than they are about imparting anything of value. Your comment means a lot, brother. Thank you so much. All the best to you.

Man, your channel is so meaningful, Rich. I stopped playing bass for several years and am so happy to be back to it. Playing chords on bass has always been a way I connected with the instrument, so I love this lesson. The way you take a moment to appreciate the beauty reminds me of Kenny Werner’s book Effortless Mastery, I recall he talks about appreciating the sound. I didn’t really get it when I read that book 15 years ago but I get it now. Thanks Rich 👌🏻

Those chords are harder to play on a 4-string. The string spacing is wider. Since I have smaller hands, I need get my hand strength up. Do you have any exercises for getting my pinky finger stronger? Thanks for all you’re giving Rich! :)
@seanlinke7422
@seanlinke7422 3 года назад
Thanks, Rich... this is very helpful! Question... is there a rule of thumb for when inversions can be used, or when they shouldn’t be used? Or are all inversions always available regardless of the chord progression (ie I V vi IV)?
@pursuitoftone5732
@pursuitoftone5732 3 года назад
I think the most important part of the progression you’re playing is making the chord transitions smooth, so yes you can technically use any inversion or voicing wherever you’d like, but a progression usually benefits from good voice leading

i know we're not there yet, but I recently learned that bass chords are usually the 1, 3 and 7 since the 5th has a lot of redundant overtones with the root. Triad chords sound muddy to my ear i think because of the 5th
@richbrownbass

The chords are an option for those who are into the sound. Cool thing is if you’re not into the sound you can just use the shapes to outline the notes available in the corresponding triad/inversion.
