Hello. I stumbled upon your channel and am so glad I did. I have only watched a few videos so far but love this one for native ideas. I have been trying to find a gardener close by me in the same gardening area because I am kind of new to Florida veg gardening (even though I have been here over 20 years) and need all the help I can get, and was surprised you are really close. I am in Largo. Thank you for your content!! Nikki

Hmm... I tried growing blue sage in a sunny spot and it lasted a couple years, but never looked happy. Anecdotally speaking, when I see this one growing in the wild, it is usually along tree lines where it is shaded during part of the day, especially southern edge tree lines where it would get morning and evening sun, but shade during the hottest part of the day. Hopefully you have better luck.

Blue sage greatly benefits from prescribed fire. Some plants just don't function as well in a normal yard setting

Your cottage garden is looking amazing. Does your nursery take the pots back for reusing? Or do you keep them (like I do) for use another? I like to cut the bottom off and put them around my tomato plants for stronger stems. Also fertilizing is more direct in those pots.

Good morning, love the idea. Enjoy planting…. I don’t know you, but personally it’s like therapy, after working all day with people, being able to relax listen to the birds outside and enjoy the peace and quiet. 🌱🐝

It looks like you are not doing any ground covers. Is that because of your experience with the frog fruit? On another video you mentioned the frog fruit choked out your other wildflowers but you wanted it to just keep weeds out. I want that too! Is it impossible to plant native ground covers and wild flowers together? Will you just be mulching in these new beds?

Is it necessary to loosen the soil before you plant? Looks like you just dropped in the holes "as is"?

i'm in St Pete also, but i'm new to native gardening and my yard is pretty much just sand! should i augment it w/ something before planting natives such as salvia and coneflower? Or will they be ok with teh sandy soil?
@WildFloridian

Depends how sandy the soil is but generally no. But maybe. Take a picture of your soil and send to me wild.floridian@gmail.com and we can review at the next members meet up! :D

Curious about how close you are to street with planters, do you have to worry about city easement? I mean, I've planted some things in the easement where if the city comes through and digs it all up for pipes, whatever, it wont be a big deal. But I liked your setup but then wondered about that part. Maybe you don't have to worry about that where you live or I guess worse case scenario, you'll just have to redo everything. Just curious if easements are a concern or not?

I've always liked the blue/orange or coral color scheme. I have a sunny bed I planted only blue, orange, and a couple of white flowers in to set off the colors and it turned out great!

It's nice to see your cottage garden taking shape. I also live in central Florida and would like to get Joe Pye weed. At what garden center were you able to purchase your plants?

The ground level middle part would be a good place to but smaller shrubs, including blue stem palmetto.

Blanket flower is an honorary native. We do have a native Gaillardia, but they are pretty uncommon

@@ThreeRunHomer It was determined that it is naturalized and not actually native to Florida

Do you get voles, moles, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels in Florida that dig in your flowers, eat roots, so forth...?
@WildFloridian
@WildFloridian 4 месяца назад
Where I live... no voles, moles, groundhogs, chipmunks. There are moles that live further north. Squirrels, Blue Jays, Opossums, Armadillos, rabbits dig in my garden... Sometimes gopher tortoises in my neighbors gardens. :D

Verbena would be a beautiful addition to the border of the beds. Also would act as a bit of a ground cover as I think alot of those are going to get tall? You've certainly packed tight for a great show though! I'm excited to see the garden grow this summer! I've heard verbena does well in Florida, I'm in a colder region though so I'm not sure how true it is.

I also want to recommend Lupines, they are a beautiful flower for a cottage garden feel as well!
