I wonder if anyone looks at these videos and would be surprised to find out it is their great grandmother or some other relative. How amazing that would be.
Richard Head Yeah, every single person in this film was “rich.” Most people didn’t go out into public unless properly dressed, unlike people today. If that meant wearing the same damn suit every day then so be it.
@@meganhanlon9839 and why is that? Women back then weren't captive, it wasn't middle age.. You could go out and have fun, get education, job, travel and so on. Times were more innocent, fashion was more beautiful and feminine. Yes i'd go back as a woman.. Perhaps you think of traditional family values as bad?
I’m going to a party tomorrow and it’s theme is early 1900’s. This is perfect, and the music is great! Thank you. By doing this those people’s stories stay alive!
3 centuries lol. Generations are not 100 years long ...u would have lived thru many more than 3 generations....but would have lived in 3 different centuries....that is true...
i love this era. Everyone looked healthy and there fashion was absolutely beautiful. People actually talked instead of texting. Everyone was very proper and you wouldn’t see anyone with crazy hair or crazy fashion. It was definitely one of the best decades.
So what if all of these people are dead. None of us were here then. We’re all just passing through and this world belongs to us while we’re here, after which time it belongs to the next crew.
Disgraceful comment Sharon. The world does NOT 'belong' to us now, and these people then. Typical arrogant attitude you never would have heard a generation ago.
@@stevefoley4073 No, that's precisely the sort of attitude of generations ago, and ESPECIALLY the one shown in the footage. They believed the world belonged to man, specifically the WHITE man in those days. It's not a 'disgraceful' comment at all, way to make a big deal out of something that's not even there. We don't "own" the planet, we didn't create it, but that doesn't mean it's not ours. That doesn't mean we abuse it, it means we're free to navigate it and call it home. But in the 1900s they were far more arrogant. "The unsinkable ship," ever heard that ironic label? Same era. People assumed then that they were on the cusp of mastering Newtonian physics and science to harness the world and control the forces of nature. That's why they believed they could build unsinkable ships and other invincible contraptions.
@@Awakeningspirit20 We'll have to agree to differ. There's no way on earth I will agree with someone saying "this world belongs to us while we’re here, after which time it belongs to the next crew." It's a disgraceful, arrogant attitude, typical of THIS generation. We'll agree to differ.
Thanx and kudos to the dedicated people who preserve these films! Everyone wore hats cuz it was either too hot in the summer (and they needed to put some shade on their heads) or too cold in the winters, or too often raining in the spring-autumn, so hats were the thing around to world to solve those problems. And so hat designs and fashions because an art from, and a status symbol if they war elaborate enough, and made of the finest materials. It wasn't until the rebellion of a new post-WWI generation in the 19-teens and 1920s that such fashions from the Victorian era was generally tossed out, but some hats, especially fedoras for men, who still spent a lot of time outdoors working or looking for work, continued to be the worn, until the boomer generation threw the use of fedoras out the window also. Occasionally, you can still see someone wearing a fedora to be "retro", but not very often with global warming an issue of our current (as I write this) times.
very enjoyable. it was good to see working folk alongside the rich parading their fashions. some of the footage is as late as the 1920s, when women's dresses were shorter
First time I have heard a recording of that song! I remember one of my relatives singing 'everybody' s doin'it...(doin it, doin it) Pickin their nose and chewin'it... (chewin it, chewin it)'.... Might have been a London thing.... 😂🤣
Thanks, the style is here,I dress like that now ,when I was young,I was drawing a great deal ,we had a tailors in the city's and some of the kids were making Indians costumes and that how everything started,I made several suits, sport wears for my self, mens clothing don't sell at all,but women's wears sells, fashion only a hobby for me ,but I try to keep up with it.
I often too, have that thought when watching these films from the early age of motion photography. Then comes the realization that all their fears, cares, and problems have also passed into the winds of time. Yet, in their times, they managed to raise their families, have some fun, and build the civilization that we live in today. We owe them much and can only repay our debt by doing the same.
Definitely. When the skirts or dresses were taken off, all they got were a thorough brushing at the hem to remove any debris and then simply hung up to be worn again.
I wear three-piece suits with high collars everyday, even in Summer. It is actually cooler than showing your skin to the harsh sun. Only high humidity can be a problem.
Oh to enjoy an afternoon Sunday stroll with a pretty lady in carefree, leisurely, conversation…..no yoga pants, no purple, pink hair, bull nose rings, tattoos. Just Elegance, simplicity, modesty, femininity……..I can dream…dreaming of a bygone era. Then I wake up in 2021 and look around….🤦♂️
i miss those days where people dress properly.. and each ethnicity has their distinct design of dressing.. people back then knew fashion better.. today we all over the world are wearing exactly same thing and plain boring besides women walk naked..
I mean....they're all wearing basically the same type of dress too that was what was "trendy" back then lol was there more effort and elegance? Most definitely.
@1:25 the first lady you can imagine her on the beach today vs the rest of the swimsuit models! I would expect the 'swimsuit' edition to all be young but it appear the majority in this line up are older.
notice they did not show all the poor people of that era 1900...just showed middle class and the rich in fancy get up of clothing only showed working class working their sox off...
I watch these type of videos for educational purposes and to learn how life was back then. Those bathing suits were horrific. Heavy clothes were the norm of fashion back then. They must have sweated a lot in the summer and had no AC either.
My big wish is to dress up just like the men in those times wear a hat and a moustache and smoke. Aaaaah when will this dream come true?oh and the Moustache would be real
WRS, As people of that era seem comfortable and confident & also orderly why did the so called progress to where we are now make life seem so disorderly, commercial, tasteless, cheap, shallow, gawdy , and most of all Over The Top Overall. RCJ/LEO
William Albert women smoked too but rarely in public. It wasn't until the beginning of WW1 that women started to feel liberated and cut their hair short, worked labor jobs and smoked in public.
Hats protect you from the environment, plain and simple. Protection from sun (skin cancer), rain, dirt (flung up horse dung), dust (basically dried horse dung). Also peoples hair doesn't looked that great back then, no hair shampoo. People spend a lot more time outside, so you would wear your hat simply more often, later you would carry your hat probably just arround in your hands (car, office, home) and just leave it at home after all.
Julio Rodriguez Don't forget, ALL the people in this video are the elites and high bourgeoisie. It was "not done" to come outside bearheaded! That was just the "privilege" of the poor! Also these rich where scared to get a brown skin from the sun, brown skin was a proof of outside labour.....TABOE!!!!!!!
As someone who spends most of his time working outdoors, I can't imagine not wearing a hat. There were times, and still is, where a man or boy not being bareheaded was considered disrespectful. Namely, entering a house of worship. I believe in general men where expected to remove their hats when going indoors. The touring caps(newspaper boy caps) still look fashionable. They were the proletarian's cap. Kind of like the baseball hats you see most people wearing today. Of coarse, no gentleman would where a hat to the dinner table. Woman were expected to keep their heads covered in church and at social events. For them it was a much more important fashion statement and a matter of modesty.
