First songs: about a girl wanting to be popular to be treated nicely Last songs: about a girl trying to stop her sociopath boyfriend from killing the whole school
@שחר א. The guys at the start of the play aren't slaves as such: they are, but they're convicts, so it's more of a punishment than the more traditional image of slavery that springs to mind
I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but in the beginning Veronica considers people to be beautiful just because of who they are and who they can be. but as soon as she joins the Heathers, she begins seeing "beautiful" as more a physical thing, about how you dress and do your hair and makeup. It's almost terrifying how quickly she changes her tune and it kind of sets up a good example of how willing she is to go along with just about anything for the rest of the show, as well as showing how quickly people can change to fit in.
That was one of the concepts of the original movie. She’s flawed, and her willingness to drop her own morals when she’s 1) invited to join the Heathers and 2) meets a JD is a satirical commentary on the fickleness of the teenage mindset.
I know it doesn’t show in this but Kurt is the one who says “Why do I act like such a creep?” and Ram says “Why did I hit him?” I like this because it actually shows that the boys are human and aren’t actually just big dumb jocks, just like Heather M this shows that they have their own insecurities and pressures. They’re like everyone else
@@torazely What about Heather Chandler? I love her but I think she's really evil and JD was the one who told her to be the new red (I might be talking about the movie rather then the musical because the original movie JD blackmailed Duke to be the new red)
@@_lLexa_l Heather C was actively willing to let Veronica join the Heathers with very little prompting. She only started taking that away when Veronica was unwilling to leave her old friends behind. Heather D, meanwhile, was cruel from the outset, insulting Veronica from the beginning and eventually even turning on the one person who HAD been kind to her, Heather M. As for JD, as much as his actions were fucked up, from his perspective it was out of his love for Veronica.
Good point, but JD and Veronica told everyone she just killed herself- sooo. Not necessarily a big reason for anyone to suspect anyone except for Heather herself- lol
I know this is like very late but I find it hilarious that the ENTIRE MUSICAL ignored that moment ever even happened! That's why it immediately cuts to the bell and things continue on XDD
emmas stupid channel I actually watch riverdale and love heathers. While yea riverdale butchered it and the plot lines are shit I actually enjoy the show because you have no idea what happens and it’s fun to shit on them when they pull a fucking plothole from nowhere
2:04 2:26 2:38 The song is great, but I also love how emotive Veronica is. She makes a lot of incredibly funny sounds and exclamations that make her super endearing
Seriously tho... I rewatched the musical the night before my first day of senior year and it just hit different from when I first watched it when I was in 6th grade.
Can we just acknowledge how Veronica just kinda dropped Martha for the popular people and when like all of them were dead she went back and was like welp I wanna be your friend again
She never ditched Martha she was still friends with her but she did allow the Heathers to bully her which was horrible. But also teenagers are selfish so she wasn’t paying much attention to Martha until she finds out she tried to harm herslenf
in the musical she is at least kind to Martha for the most part, and we see it best in the forged note and piñata scene that her attempts to let Martha down slowly backfire on her. even if her decision is the wrong one, her decisions are well-intended
I haven’t listened to Heathers in YEARS, but it’s my first day of senior year and you bet I’m fulfilling my 14 year old self’s dream of playing this walking into school.
@@vine_rip.relevant6889 Together in life and in death Even if unwillingly Because I'm pretty sure sharing a suicide note makes you tied together in the afterlife :P
You know at 4:32 it’s kinda foreshadowing Heather McNamara: the students are saying they hate Heather, foreshadowing how they’ll hate her later on in the musical Heather Duke: the students are saying they want Heather, foreshadowing how they wanted Heather duke to be the new Heather Chandler after she died. Heather Chandler: the students are saying they need Heather, foreshadowing how once she died everything became hectic and crazy. So they need her or else they’ll go crazy.
*Spoiler Alert for the musical* Does anyone else notice the kind of foreshadowing of Veronica's line "Fight the urge to strike a match And set this dump ablaze" ?
+Scrap Without The Book Part of "Candy Store" also foreshadows when Heather McNamara is kicked out of the Heathers in "Shine a Light"! The lyrics are almost identical!
I mean, the musical DID have a happy ending of sorts. Veronica became the new 'Heathers' ruling the school, the murderer was stopped, and no one decided to commit sudoku. I mean, yeah, four other people had to die to get there, but the ends _always_ justify the means
Nostalgia's a weird thing. I found this musical less than a year ago and I feel nostalgic listening to this song. Life wasn't even that different then. Like, at all.
Heather Macnamara: "Her dad sells engagement rings" - she relies on commitment to survive. When Heather C dies and Heather D turns on her, Veronica commits to being her friend by saving her life. Heather Duke: "Her mom did pay for implants" - relies on looks to get by, tries desperately to imitate Heather C to gain her popularity. Heather Chandler: "The almighty/she is a mythic bitch" - completely in control of the school, even in death she becomes something of a myth, even though she was a bitch, everyone reads Veronica's letter and assumes that Heather C was a broken soul, making her all the more popular. God I love clever lyrics :D
My only problem with this song is that nobody muttered "What the fuck?" after the dudes bit about wanting to kidnap one of the Heathers because that would have made it perfect
Me: vibing to the song My sister: what are you doing...? ME: WHY DO I CRY MYSELF TO- Oh I am vibing to *plays her favorite part of song (3:16) Both of us WHYYYYYYYYYY *JAMMING TO SONG* Edit: thank you for reading and dor likes ♡︎♡︎
Hello fellow musical theater fans! This is my first listen through to the musical. I saw it once through an app, and I'm excited to become obsessed with a new musical! I'll see you all and this comment soon
@@meridaskywalker7816 safe to say task succeeded. I listened to only the soundtrack for a solid 3 months. And now I’m auditioning for a community theatre production of Heathers in June :)
@@meridaskywalker7816 haha it’s a teen edition so it’s not exactly the same but I’m still excited. My best friend is going out for Veronica and my personality is identical to Martha’s so fingers crossed we get them 🤞she’s really good at singing and looks like a Veronica so I have high hopes for her
Something I noticed. McNamara gets the chorus lines "I hate Heather, Heather, and Heather." Duke gets the lines "I want Heather, Heather, and Heather." Chandler gets the lines "I need Heather, Heather, and Heather." McNamara is hated later by the school after Chandler's death because of Duke. Duke is wanted because she replaces Chandler. Chandler is needed because her death is the reason for the story
I saw that too! Though. I saw it a bit different. I saw McNamera's like as in she actually hates 'Heathers' the group and what it creates in the social order, which is reinforced by her solo song lifeboat, as well as in shine a light reprise. I saw Duke's as in she wants to be Heather. She wants to be 'Heathers', like how she tries taking control in the Candy Store note, or how she actually does take control once Chandler is dead. And I Chandler's as in she needs the social system. That she simply couldn't exist without being on top. Like when Jason makes the comparison that Heathers and Marthas can only get along when they're both dead. And the instant Chandler dies, the social order she 'needs' starts falling apart.
@@statictacos1138 I think heather Mc. Didn't start to notice how bad the group was till after heather c. And Kurt and Rams deaths. She still bullied people and still was an ass, she just had the most potential to change. Duke was worthless to heather c. And was always shut up by her, when she died duke didn't have anyone telling her how horrible and worthless she was so she got power hungry trying to find control. Heather c. seems like the one to keep things in check but ends up hurting her own friend group. They all were just as bad as the other one but Mc. Had the most potential to change(just my opinion)
Note: No less than three times during this song, the very first song of the entire musical, Veronica mentions wanting to blow up or burn down the school. Foreshadowing much?
Something I would like to point out is that no one is talking about how horrible Ms. Fleming was. One of the heathers was throwing up her food as she had an eating disorder that made her do that. Ms. Fleming simply brushed past that and cared more about giving the girl’s detention then actually caring for her student with a eating disorder. Ms. Fleming claims to love the kids, but in reality she is only in love with the *idea* of helping the kids. I found this something very important to talk about. Anyway, thanks for reading.
huh. always thought 3:34 (written as "Get me some cold beer" in the video) was actually "Give me some hope here" I'll still stick to it, but that's an interesting interpretation.
Ever notice how the only time the students aren’t crumbling under the pressures of their personal lives is when they’re holding the Heathers up on their pedestal? It’s as if they use worshiping the Heathers as a distraction from their crippling angst.
a tiktok audio reminded me of my musical phase. i havent heard this since 8th grade and I'm a senior now. the first part was really relatable "first day of senior year and I look around at all these kids I've known all my life and I ask myself "what happened?""
Katie Chambers i believe "give me some hope here" is the actual line. i hear it that way as well, my guess is the lyric video is wrong but i'm not certain
“Then we got bigger, that was the trigger Like the Huns invading Rome Welcome to my school This ain’t no high school This is the Thunderdome,” is such a great set of musical lyrics that it’s a shame the rest doesn’t quite live up to that like the film did.
SPOILERS FOR NEWCOMERS Fun fact: I went into this musical knowing only one thing, that several people die and someone in the cast was a serial killer. So when Heather MacNamara said her creepy line about Veronica having a symmetrical face, I immediately assumed that the Heathers were the serial killers. I saw some people in the comments of "Fight For Me" saying JD killed for Veronica. So I assumed, oh innocent ol' me, that this sweet sad boi getting bullied and singing about slushies would be manipulated by the Heathers and pushed to help Veronica by killing someone. Boy, was I wrong.
